Inhibition of Quorum Sensing Controlled Virulence Factors and Biofilm Formation of Streptococcus mutans Isolated From Orthodontic Subjects by 4-Hydroxycinnamic Acid.

Introduction Dental plaque biofilms are a collection of microorganisms that are adhered to the tooth enamel surface. Inhibition of plaque biofilms is required to prevent dental caries and periodontitis and currently, there are many chemical and herbal products in use for inhibition of biofilms but with limited success. Materials and methods Dental plaque collection was done from subjects undergoing orthodontic therapy followed by isolation of Streptococcus mutans. Isolated S. mutans were subjected to disk diffusion assay with 4-HCA (baseline 10mg/mL) for the zone of inhibition and broth micro-

Treatment Modalities for Early Management of Class III Skeletal Malocclusion: A Case Series.

The characteristic features of Class III malocclusion are present at an early age, usually between 3 and 5 years of age. If left untreated, the Class III malocclusion or severe anterior crossbite may worsen, with the majority of these patients ultimately requiring orthognathic surgery as adults. The treatment in all developing Class III cases should be undertaken as soon as the abnormality is diagnosed to prevent it from becoming permanent and resulting in a full-blown Class III malocclusion. It provides more pleasing facial esthetics (the lip posture and facial appearance), thus improving the

Orally administered liposomal lactoferrin inhibits inflammation-related bone breakdown without interrupting orthodontic tooth movement.

BACKGROUND: Bovine lactoferrin (bLF) modulates the production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and inhibits alveolar bone breakdown associated with periodontitis. This study is designed to examine the effects of orally administered liposomal bLF (LbLF) on orthodontic force (OF)-induced alveolar bone remodeling during experimental tooth movement. METHODS: Two groups of male Wistar rats were treated with either LbLF or control solution in drinking water 7 days before OF application. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was injected into the gingival sulcus in half the rats in each group. Thus, four g

External apical root resorption in patients treated by serial extractions followed by mechanotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: In the course of orthodontic treatment with serial extractions (SE), spontaneous unraveling of crowded incisors occurs. It was hypothesized that SE followed by mechanotherapy will cause less external apical root resorption (EARR) than orthodontic treatment with late extractions (LE). METHODS: The records of 24 patients who underwent SE and mechanotherapy and 24 control patients who underwent LE and mechanotherapy were examined. The groups were matched for sex, central incisor root development and morphology, malocclusion class, ANB angle, and overjet. Lateral cephalograms taken

Extraction of First Permanent Molars in Children-A Comprehensive Review of History, Aim, Space Closure and Other Consequences.

Compromised first permanent molars (FPMs) in children pose major challenges for dentists and patients even in low-caries-risk populations. Whether due to caries or Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH), compromised FPMs at an early age require careful treatment planning and timing of extraction, if necessary, to eventually have good space closure with healthy dentition. This comprehensive review explains the concept of early extraction of the FPMs in children and lists the results of published studies and systematic reviews regarding spontaneous or orthodontical space closure after the extrac

Evidence that ectopic upper third molars can result in upper second molar impactions: A case series.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of these four case reports was to illustrate the presence of potential upper second molar impactions associated with ectopic third molars and to highlight that some cases have an atypical radiographic presentation. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Four patients (age range = 7-12 years) with various malocclusions presented to the paediatric and orthodontic departments for treatment to address their presenting complaints. Incidental radiographic findings demonstrated potentially impacted upper second molars associated with ectopic third molars. In all of these cases, a joint paediatric

Bone-anchored maxillary protraction long-term outcomes in UCLP.

This case report presents a 12-year-old boy with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate and severe maxillary retrusion treated with bone-anchored maxillary protraction (BAMP) therapy followed by fixed appliances. The follow-up period extended until the end of growth. Initially, the patient demonstrated a Goslon 4 interarch relationship with an overjet of -3.5 mm and a Wits appraisal of -7.9 mm. Six months after the secondary alveolar bone graft, Bollard miniplates were fixed bilaterally at the infrazygomatic region in the maxilla and between the canines and lateral incisors in the mandible.

Modified maxillomandibular advancement for obstructive sleep apnoea: towards a better outcome for Asians.

Excluding tracheostomy, maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) is the most effective surgical treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). However, the anticipated facial changes may prevent acceptance of this procedure by patients with bimaxillary protrusion, a common feature of Asian faces. We therefore developed a modified MMA technique for such cases, consisting of anterior segmental osteotomies together with standard Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies. A prospective study of 20 consecutive Taiwanese adults with moderate-to-severe OSA who underwent modified MMA and postsurgic

A novel multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of an intruded immature permanent incisor.

The optimal treatment for intruded permanent teeth has not yet been determined. The ideal treatment option is the one with the lowest probability of developing complications such as external root resorption and marginal bone loss. Each case should be considered individually, bearing in mind the severity of the intrusion, the stage of root development, and tooth mobility. Management of an intruded permanent tooth may consist of: (1) observation for spontaneous eruption; (2) surgical crown uncovering; (3) orthodontic extrusion (with or without prior luxation of the intruded tooth); (4) and parti

Mucogingival interceptive surgery of buccally-erupted premolars in patients scheduled for orthodontic treatment. I. A 7-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Mucogingival interceptive therapy in patients with buccally erupting teeth is performed to prevent the ectopic permanent tooth from developing periodontal lesions. The keratinized tissue entrapped between the erupting tooth and the deciduous tooth is retained to maintain a satisfactory width of the gingiva for the permanent tooth. The aim of the present study on buccally-erupted premolars scheduled for orthodontics was to evaluate the keratinized tissue width 3 months, 2 years, and 7 years subsequent to mucogingival interceptive therapy and orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Twenty-n

Interdepartmental approach to early malocclusion management: A pediatric and orthodontic collaborative study.

Malocclusion can result in temporomandibular joint dysfunction, impaired speech, impaired mastication, aberrant craniofacial development and psychosocial difficulties. Therefore, it is of interest to assess early malocclusion in 50 children ages 6 to 12. Children were monitored every 6-8 weeks and received preventive, interceptive, or observational care based on joint assessments. The findings revealed a 78% improvement in occlusion, along with high parental satisfaction (92%) and compliance (88%). A statistically significant improvement was noted (p < 0.05). Thus, cooperative early interventi

Multidisciplinary therapy for the treatment of malocclusion in a patient with chronic periodontitis with a five-year follow-up: A case report.

Multidisciplinary therapy is essential in dental practice to achieve optimized outcomes. The present case report describes the application of periodontal surgery with a five-year follow-up in a patient with malocclusion and chronic periodontitis. In the presence of periodontal inflammation, orthodontic therapy may result in further periodontal breakdown due to plaque accumulation. In order to prevent this progression, scaling and root planning with a periodontal endoscope was applied, and continuous clinical monitoring and risk assessment was performed every 3 months using a Florida Probe. Patient with nonsyndromic bilateral and multiple impacted teeth and dentigerous cysts.

This article reports the successful treatment of a patient with the unusual occurrence of bilateral and multiple dentigerous cysts of the premolars. One impacted mandibular premolar was moved by traction orthodontically. On the opposite side, the impacted premolar was autotransplanted after space was created through mesial movement and hemi-sectioning of the neighboring molars. The impacted maxillary premolar was extracted. Miniscrews were additionally used for anchorage reinforcement to prevent unintended counteractions and solve the problem of space management after autotransplantation. We a

[Dentofacial orthopedics and craniomandibular dysfunction].

There has been a recent recrudescence of cranio-mandibular disorders (CMD), predominantly affecting women. Even children can be affected by CMD, often under diagnoses by their families and by medical professionals. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is important when evaluating the variety of diagnostic and etiological problems. The search for postural etiology, whether lingual or dental, is always necessary to better act on the etiology of these disorders. The involvement of orthodontics, in the prevention of CMD, has three impacts: functional, aesthetic and psychological, allowing for a

A case of impacted maxillary central incisor and its management.

Impaction of maxillary permanent central incisor is not a frequently reported case in dental practice, but its treatment is challenging because of its importance to facial esthetics. Early detection of such teeth is most important if complications are to be avoided. We report a case of a 14-year-old female with an impacted central incisor tooth in the maxillary anterior region. The impacted supernumerary tooth which was preventing the eruption of permanent incisor was surgically removed. Combined approach with surgical exposure and the application of an orthodontic force brought the impacted l

[Orthodontic prophylaxis].

The problems related to the prevention of dental anomalies are very complex. They include the health care for the expectant mother and become evident above all if one considers the long period of development during which the dentition must be protected against adverse causative effects. The developmental phases of the orofacial system from birth to the time at which the permanent anteriors begin to erupt are set forth and measures are deduced that may contribute to the reduction of malformations. It is emphasized that orthodontic prophylaxis will be efficient only if the causative relationship

Direct bonding on impacted teeth.

In eighteen patients twenty-three impacted teeth were surgically exposed and provided with Cuspid-Pull Brackets by the direct-bonding technique. Light orthodontic traction was applied after 10 minutes. Only three brackets were lost during the experiment. The experiment showed that sufficient bonding could be established on impacted teeth without pumicing the tooth surface and that phosphoric acid in minimal amounts causes no harm to the adjacent tissues but assists in preventing bleeding from the surrounding tissues. This made it possible to obtain the necessary dryness of the exposed tooth su
