Adeno-tonsillar hypertrophy is the most common cause of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in childhood and may also play a role in the development of craniofacial abnormalities. The mode of breathing and the morphology of the dental arch are very closely connected. Most of the children who came to the ENT clinic had malocclusions. The early performance of surgical treatment on hypertrophied tonsils and/or adenoids influenced greatly the state of health and morphology of the dental arch. In the process of diagnosis and treatment of children with OSAS it is necessary to have multidisciplin

Combined orthodontic-prosthodontic procedures will enhance the results of restorative treatment in adult patients. Restoration of malposed teeth using prostheses alone will fail both esthetically and functionally. Rotation, spacing or crowding and tipped teeth will compromise the final restoration if left untreated. Correction of axial inclination will prevent pulp exposure during preparation, as well as improving the periodontal status of the involved teeth. Cooperation between the orthodontist and the prosthodontist will ensure a more favorable final result. Cases treated in this manner are

The dentoskeletal discrepancies of the craniofacial complex in the transverse dimension which usually appear in combination with similar discrepancies in the antero-posterior and the vertical dimension or more ravely by themselves, are of the highest interest for the clinical orthodontist and increase the complexity of the diagnostic procedure in these cases. In this study emphasis in given in diagnostic evaluation of the cases with transverse maxillary discrepancies. Diagnostic criteria which must be taken under consideration both during clinical examination and during orthodontic model study

Bimaxillary protrusion is a unique dentofacial deformity trait that can exist in an individual as an isolated problem or in combination with other skeletal and dental-related issues. Orthodontist and oral and maxillofacial surgeons are often the main primary team involved in the management of bimaxillary protrusion. Clinical dilemma often exists as cases can either be treated orthodontically or may require a combination of orthodontic and skeletal segmental orthognathic surgery. This article aims to help clinicians improve their approach to management of bimaxillary protrusion by creating a cl

Patients with dentoalveolar asymmetries can present some of the most biomechanically challenging situations to the orthodontist. One creative approach for managing dental asymmetries is to extract a combination of teeth that will simplify intra-arch and interarch mechanics. Often this will also reduce the dependency on patient compliance for elastic wear and may even shorten treatment time. Atypical extraction patterns can also be beneficial in the presurgical orthodontic preparation of orthognathic surgery patients. Multiple diagnostic scenarios are discussed, and various treatment plans invo

Some adult patients have mild to moderate periodontal disease before orthodontic treatment. These patients may be at risk of developing further periodontal breakdown during orthodontic therapy. However, careful diagnosis and judicious management of these potentially volatile patients can alleviate the risk. In this article, the diagnosis and management of several periodontal problems is discussed. The need for and timing of preorthodontic periodontal surgery for these situations is elucidated. In addition, the types of tooth movement that will ameliorate these problematic situations is describ

INTRODUCTION: While the anterior cantilevered resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis (RBFDP) is now well established among orthodontists and general practitioners, the posterior cantilevered RBFDP has only more recently gained attention in the international literature. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of this therapeutic option and its rationale, based on an original chairside clinical case performed in a single session.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: A clinical case involving a 20-year-old female patient is presented. The patient exhibited a missing mandibular molar due to extraction f…

Accurate cephalometric assessment is used in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. The aim of this study was to confirm the reliability of Sar and W angle measurements with the results obtained for the ANB angle. The reliability of angular measurements for determining sagittal discrepancy was assessed after determining anthropometric points (N, A, B, S, W, M, G). These formed the ANB, Sar, and W angles, respectively. Cephalometric analyses were performed separately, 7 days apart, by 22 orthodontists. To determine inter-rater reliability, a two-way ANOVA without repeated measures was us…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy and precision of the AudaxCeph® fully automated software in identifying cephalometric landmarks on lateral cephalograms of Class II and Class III skeletal relationships, comparing its performance against experienced orthodontists using manual tracing within the same software environment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty cephalograms depicting severe Class II or Class III skeletal discrepancies were assessed by two board-certified orthodontists and AudaxCeph®'s artificial intelligence automatic tracing software. Among these, 40 cases were classified as Class II a…

The origins of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy began in the early 1960's by orthodontists who recognized the importance of functional nasal breathing, proper swallowing, and more ideal oral rest postures. Re-patterning these functions through myofunctional therapy assisted with better orthodontic outcomes and improved stability. Experts in orofacial myology have concluded that improper oral rest postures and tongue thrusting may be the result of hypertrophy of the lymphatic tissues in the upper airway. Orthodontists are aware of the deleterious effects these habits have on the developing face …
