A multitechnique approach has been used to characterize the surface of nonosseointegrated titanium implants and the surrounding biological tissues. Five pure titanium dental implants were used as reference, and 25 removed implants were studied. Surface and in-depth chemical compositions of the implants (from a total of 16 patients) were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Histological slides of the surrounding tissues were examined by light microscopy, XPS, and electron microprobe analysis. None of the failed implants presented the regular surface composition and depth prof

BACKGROUND: Heightened fall risk following lower limb amputation can lead to adaptations during walking that increase proactive stability (e.g., a wider base of support). However, such compensations also reduce maneuverability, increasing reactive stability demands (e.g., corrective steps) as more lateral foot placement necessitates greater lateral impulses. By improving prosthetic control, osseointegration (OI) may mitigate fall risk and reduce the need for proactive stability compensations. Thus, this work aims to characterize proactive stability compensations, via mediolateral margins of st…

INTRODUCTION: We describe a new surgical technique to improve the stability of the peristomal skin around an osseointegrated implant in transfemoral amputees. As a secondary effect, the technique makes it easier to shape the residual limb into a cone and reduces the need for more complex revision surgery in the years after surgery.
METHODS: We compared outcomes in 2 groups of unilateral, transfemoral amputees by 18 months after insertion of an osseointegrated prosthetic limb implant. In Group 1, the soft tissues were managed using a standard muscle-platform technique. In Group 2, the soft tis

AIM: To test whether early implant placement into the extraction socket containing an uncalcified provisional matrix leads to successful osseointegration and stable marginal bone levels.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In six mongrel dogs, the mandibular molars were extracted. Three weeks later, early implant placement was performed according to three experimental protocols: (i) flapless implant placement with preservation of the provisional matrix; (ii) flap elevation, socket debridement and implant placement; and (iii) flap elevation, socket debridement, implant placement and guided bone regeneratio…

Percutaneous osseointegrated implants for individuals with lower limb amputation can increase mobility, reduce socket related pain, and improve quality of life. It would be useful to have an evaluation method to assess the interface between bone and implant. We assessed outpatient radiographs from the Intraosseous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis clinical trial using an interface scoring system which summed and weighted equally measures of implant collar cortical ongrowth and radiolucency along the implant stem/bone interface. Radiographs from 12 participants with unilateral transfemoral a

We report our experience using a novel minimally invasive surgical technique for implantation of a fully implantable active bone conduction implant. This was a retrospective review of 16 adults, including 10 women and 6 men. The mean age was 54 years. Hearing loss profiles included 8 with mixed hearing loss, 5 with conductive hearing loss, and 3 with single-sided deafness. Nine patients underwent placement through the standard approach and 7 with the minimally invasive approach. There were no postoperative complications at a mean follow-up of 6.5 months (SD, 4; range, 1.5-12), and all patients

Auricular reconstruction in microtia patients is challenging, particularly in bilateral cases. The use of osseointegrated implants is a safe and effective way to retain the auricular prostheses. With the help of virtual planning we can produce more predictable results with better aesthetic outcomes. We present a case of an 8-year-old bilateral microtia patient who underwent auricular reconstruction with implant-retained prostheses, using virtual planning. Using stereolithographic models and surgical guides was also very helpful to achieve excellent results.

Displacement of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is not an uncommon event in implant dentistry and may lead to serious complications, such as sinusitis. To avoid systemic problems, performing the removal of the foreign body as soon as possible is suggested. Despite the fact that early implants dislocation has been reported several times, late migration into maxillary sinus has been described by just a few studies. The purpose of this study was to report a rare case of dental implant migration into maxillary sinus after 12 years of function. A 61-year-old woman came to our attention in

PURPOSE: To describe an unusual case of mandibular fracture after osseointegrated dental implant removal placed after inferior alveolar nerve transposition.
REPORT OF CASE: The patient underwent inferior nerve transposition for implant placement due to lack of interarch space. Two months after metal-ceramic crowns installation, the patient began to complain of pain in the region of the implant. In an attempt to remove the implant, there was a fracture of the implant, and only two third of it was removed, leaving only the apical portion of the implant in the mandible. The patient opted for the

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of hydroxyapatite coating of newly designed osseointegrated fixtures' abutments on the postoperative complication rates. The integrity of peri-implant microcirculation was used as a marker to compare tissue viability after different surgical techniques. Laser-Doppler Flowmetry (LDF) measures alone, and coupled with heat provocation tests were applied to test the different microcircular patterns. Measures for 17 consecutively implanted patients (8 women, 9 men, ages ranged from 18 to 77 years) were recruited; seven with soft tissue reductio

Direct attachment of an upper leg prosthesis to the skeletal system by a percutaneous implant is an alternative solution to the traditional socket fixation. In this study, we investigated long-term periprosthetic bone changes around two types of fixation implants using two different initial conditions, namely immediate post-amputation implantation and the conventional implantation after considerable time of socket prosthesis use. We questioned the difference in bone modeling response the implants provoked and if it could lead to premature bone fracture. Generic CT-based finite element models o

The aims of this thesis were first to longitudinally investigate patients' opinions of their speech and other oral functions, evaluate some parameters of oral functions and speech production after treatment with a maxillary fixed prosthesis on osseointegrated implants (FPOI) and secondly to analyse normal Swedish [s] production. 21 consecutive selected patients rehabilitated with maxillary FPOI were studied over a 3-year period. The parameters of masticatory functions were clenching force, chewing efficiency, oral stereognosis and oral motor ability. With the aid of perceptual, acoustic, and m

A method of reconstructing the severely atrophic mandible that simultaneously provides additional strength and the ability to house osseointegrated implants is presented. The performance of the procedure from an external approach minimizes the possibility of oral contamination and, therefore, infection. The procedure has been performed on 10 patients, with a longest follow-up of 3 years. A 93% success rate has been achieved, and bone resorption at the implant sites has thus far been negligible. Prosthetic rehabilitation has been done in 9 of the 10 cases; 3 have been tissue-supported prosthese

Thumb amputations severely compromise hand function, particularly grip and opposition. Osseointegration, originally developed for dental implantation, has become a promising method for directly anchoring prostheses to bone. This technique uses a two-stage protocol: first, a dental implant is placed into the medullary canal and allowed to integrate with the surrounding bone; once stable osseointegration is confirmed, a skin-penetrating abutment and custom prosthesis are attached. This approach provides secure fixation even when bone stock is limited and offers several advantages over convention…
