Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the abnormal growth of bone in soft connective tissues that occurs as a frequent complication in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and in rare genetic disorders. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms behind ectopic bone formation in response to TBI is likely to have a significant impact on identification of novel therapeutic targets for HO treatment. In this study, we induced repetitive mild TBI (mTBI) using a weight drop model in mice and then stimulated HO formation via a local injury to the Achilles tendon or fibula. The amount of ectopic bone,

A 54-year-old man with a history of unimelic, post-traumatic multifocal heterotopic ossification (HO) and normal genetic analysis of ACVR1 and GNAS had variants of unknown significance (VUS) in PDLIM-7 (PDZ and LIM Domain Protein 7), the gene encoding LMP-1 (LIM Mineralization Protein-1), an intracellular protein involved in the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathway signaling and ossification. In order to determine if the LMP-1 variants were plausibly responsible for the phenotype observed, a series of in vitro experiments were conducted. C2C12 cells were co-transfected with a BMP-responsiv

The incidence of primary and revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is increasing worldwide. Heterotopic ossification is a common and concerning complication of TKA. There are few described cases of severe heterotopic ossification after revision TKA and no known cases of heterotopic ossification causing functional ankylosis after revision TKA. We describe a case of extensive heterotopic ossification in a patient who underwent right TKA for extensive adhesions and stiffness. After early range of motion improvement postoperatively, the patient discontinued a physical therapy regimen. The patient

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Heterotopic ossification is a frequent and a well-known complication after elective primary total hip arthroplasty. Prophylaxis is crucial since once the ossification is mature, the only treatment option is its surgical removal during revision hip surgery. There are pre-, peri- and postoperative prophylactic modalities. Ranking among the perioperative possibilities is the application of tranexamic acid in blood control management. The aim of our study is to prove the positive side effect of tranexamic acid application on reducing the heterotopic ossification ratio. MATERIA

Heterotopic ossification(HO) and progressive bone formation(PBF) are main factors affecting the motion ability of target segments after cervical artificial disc replacement(CADR).The severity of pre-operative degeneration of target segment is the most important factor in the occurrence and progression of HO and PBF. The occurrence and progression of HO and PBF can be reduced basically through the improvement of degeneration evaluation system for intervertebral disc (including height, range of motion and osteophyte formation), uncovertebral joint and facet joint and standardization of surgical

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of abnormal mature lamellar bone in extra-skeletal sites, including soft tissues and joints, which result in high rates of disability. The understanding of the mechanism of HO is insufficient. The aim of this study was to explore biomarkers and pathological processes in HO+ samples. The gene expression profile GSE94683 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Sixteen samples from nine HO- and seven HO+ subjects were analyzed. After data preprocessing, 3,529 genes were obtained for weighted gene co-expression network analysis. High

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication after surgery for elbow trauma. Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism and has several physiological and pathogenic roles. However, the relationship between HO and uric acid has not been explored. This retrospective study aimed to assess the relationship between HO and serum uric acid (SUA).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from 155 patients undergoing elbow trauma surgery in our hospital between January 2013 and December 2018. One hundred patients were included according to the inclusion crite

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) and anterior bone loss (ABL) are 2 complications in cervical disc replacement (CDR), which have impacts on the clinical outcomes. Physiologically, bone formation (HO) and bone loss are 2 sides of bone remodeling. However, clinically, some patients experienced anterior HO (AHO) after CDR, whereas other patients experienced ABL. Is there any factor in determining the fate of the vertebral bone in the anterior region? Is ABL the opposite of AHO? This study aims to answer these questions.
METHODS: Seventy patients with 1-level Prestige-LP CDR were retrosp

INTRODUCTION: Surgical resection of heterotopic ossification (HO) around the hip joint is often challenging. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes following surgical resection of Brooker's type III and IV HO of the hip.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical and radiological data, between November 2006 and January 2013, of all patients who underwent surgical resection of severe HO of the hip. Brooker's grading, range of motion and the Harris Hip Score before and after surgery were recorded in all cases. The combined radiation (700 cGy preoperativel

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO) is usually treated by surgical excision. Postoperative infection (POI) is a possible complication, whose epidemiology, causative organisms, and risk factors are poorly known. We therefore conducted a case-control study to (1) identify the risk factors for POI after surgical excision of NHO at the hip, (2) determine the frequency of POI, (3) and identify the causative organisms.
HYPOTHESIS: Risk factors for POI after NHO excision at the hip can be identified.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, the BANKHO databa

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) may lead to complete elbow ankylosis, resulting in severe disability. The prognostic factors that may be valuable in guiding treatment of this condition have not yet been evaluated. The goals of this study were to describe the outcomes of open release for ankylosed elbow caused by HO and to analyse factors associated with clinical outcomes.
METHOD: This retrospective study assessed 41 patients with ankylosed elbows treated by open release surgery. We report final clinical outcomes and analyses of the association between outcomes and clinical variables

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disease with a progressive course characterized by episodically local flare-ups, which often but not always leads to heterotopic bone formation (HO). Recently, we showed that [18F]NaF PET/CT may be the first tool to monitor progression of a posttraumatic flare-up leading to new HO, which was demonstrated in a patient with FOP who underwent a maxillofacial surgery. This paper evaluates [18F]NaF PET/CT as a marker of FOP disease activity, comparing its use with other imaging modalities known in literature. In addition, the follow-up o

STUDY DESIGN: Review of the literature.
OBJECTIVES: It is widely believed that the timing of surgery and the size of the initial Neurological Heterotopic Ossification (NHO) affect the recurrence risk of NHO after SCI. A large number of studies were published in the 80s and the 90s, mostly of poor quality despite the fact that they were carried out by experienced surgical teams. The aim of this study was to suggest recommendations relating to the timing of excision of heterotopic ossification after SCI following the analysis of a recent review of the literature.
SETTING: France.
METHODS: A s

Heterotopic mesenteric ossification (HMO) is a rare disease that results in intra-abdominal ossification of unknown origin. An 88-year-old man developed an intestinal obstruction 2 weeks after undergoing an operation for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, resulting in intestinal obstructions those did not improved concervatively. During relaparotomy performed 30 days after the first operation, hard adhesions of the small intestine and mesentery were found; these adhesions were difficult to separate without damaging the serosa of the small intestine. We removed 240 cm of the small intestine

We report a case of isolated ossification of iliopsoas with ankylosis of the left hip in a 27-year-old female. The patient was diagnosed to have Moyamoya disease, a rare chronic occlusive disorder of cerebrovascular circulation following an acute onset of hemiplegia. The patient presented 9 months later to us with ankylosis of left hip which was successfully treated by surgical excision of the heterotopic bone and there was no recurrence at the end of 5 years. A review of literature failed to reveal a similar case with isolated and complete ossification of iliopsoas muscle associated with Moya

A single recurrent mutation in the regulatory subdomain of a bone morphogenetic protein type I receptor kinase has been linked to heterotopic ossification in classic fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). As a result of a substitution at 1 residue by only 1 other side chain (Arg206His) in just 1 of the 4 type I BMP receptors (ALK2/ACVR1), soft connective tissues progressively metamorphose through an endochondral process into cartilage that is replaced by bone. The substitution of arginine for histidine, also a basic residue yet with the singular property of ionization/protonation over th

The purpose of our study was to evaluate magnetic resonance (MR) signal characteristics of acutely forming heterotopic ossification (HO) in paralyzed patients. Fourteen patients with spinal cord injury (female n=2, male n=12, mean age 38.3 years) and acute onset of radiographically proven HO had contrast-enhanced 1.5-T MRI within 13.4+/-18.3 days of clinical onset of symptoms. MR signal alterations of affected muscles, fascia, subcutaneous tissue, skin and adjacent bone were evaluated. A diffuse T2-hyperintense signal of multiple muscle groups was seen in all patients (bilateral in 12) involvi

The cases of a forty-five-year-old woman and a twenty-year-old man who developed severe intraarticular and periarticular heterotopic ossification around the knee following intramedullary nailing of a femur fracture using a retrograde technique. The association of musculoskeletal heterotopic ossification with closed head injuries seems well established and can occur in and around the knee following retrograde intramedullary nailing. This complication may occur more often than has been reported.

Although indomethacin is effective in preventing heterotopic ossification (HO) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) when used for 8 to 14 days, side effects are frequently observed. We conducted a prospective, nonrandomized pilot study of prophylaxis for HO in THA using indomethacin for 3 days. We used a 2-stage design for phase 2 clinical data, based on earlier studies in our department. Our study group consisted of 19 patients, of whom 14 (74%) developed HO; 7 (37%) showed grade 1, 4 (21%) grade II, and 3 (15.8%) grade III according to the Brooker classification. We compared these results with
