Feline nasopharyngeal polyps.

In summary, an ideal diagnostic plan for cats with suspected FNPs should include a thorough anesthetized oropharyngeal examination, otoscopic examination, and imaging studies, which may consist of a bulla radiographic series or specialized imaging studies such as CT or MR scans. In general, if signs indicative of otitis media are present, ventral bulla osteotomy should be advised. As a result of the distinct appearance of FNPs, a preoperative biopsy is not indicated in all instances but should be considered if there are atypical features to the history or presentation. Traction-avulsion of pol

Phenotype of DFNA11: a nonsyndromic hearing loss caused by a myosin VIIA mutation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To characterize the audiovestibular phenotype of DFNA11, an autosomal dominant nonsyndromic hearing impairment caused by a mutation in the myosin VIIA gene (MYO7A), including whether DFNA11-affected subjects have retinal degeneration as is characteristic of Usher syndrome type 1B, caused by different MYO7A mutations. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of audiovestibular and ophthalmological data in a Japanese family linked to DFNA11. METHODS: Otoscopic examination and pure-tone audiometry were performed in all participants in the family. Selected subjects underwent addi

Approach to recurrent respiratory infections.

Rational approach to diagnosis and management of recurrent respiratory infections is needed, or else the child is subjected to unnecessary investigations and multiple drugs. Repeated respiratory symptoms do not mean a respiratory infection. A diagnosis of viral infection does not justify prescription of an antibiotic. Recurrent viral infections are part of the growing up process of any child. Giving antibiotics at every episode to cover "so-called superadded bacterial infections" will lead to "recurrent antibiotics" and adverse effects on growth. Systematic approach should be used to find the

The effects of chronic otitis media with effusion on the measurement of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are low-level acoustic sounds of cochlear origin that can be recorded from the external auditory canal under well-controlled conditions. They are a natural by-product of normal auditory physiology and may be divided into two general categories: spontaneous and evoked emissions. These emissions provide an objective, non-invasive measurement of cochlear function that is accurate, rapid, and simple to perform. The clinical utility of OAEs has been extensively described in both normally hearing subjects and subjects with sensori-neural hearing loss. The primary clinica

Evaluation of ventilating tubes and myringotomy in the treatment of recurrent or persistent otitis media.

In a prospective controlled study of the efficacy and sequelae of ventilating tubes, 44 children with bilateral recurrent acute otitis media (greater than 6 episodes/year) and 13 children with bilateral persistent middle ear effusion (greater than 3 months) received unilateral ventilating tube insertion in a randomly selected ear. The contralateral ears were randomized to receive either myringotomy alone or no surgery. Clinical, otoscopic, tympanometric and audiologic examinations were performed before the study and 2 to 4 weeks later, then at 3-month intervals for up to 2 years and at 36 mont

Three-dimensional images of the temporal bone and experimental otitis media in Japanese monkeys.

Since the middle ear structure of animals commonly used for experimental study is different from that of humans, we used the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscatus) as an animal model for otitis media with effusion (OME). The exact similarities and differences of the ear structure between humans and Japanese monkeys were studied by the use of computer-aided three-dimensional reconstruction, in addition to light and electron microscopy. Otitis media with effusion was repeatedly induced by direct intratympanic inoculation of one of the following: keyhole limpet hemocyanin; following systemic immunizat

Acute profound deafness in Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Two case reports.

Two patients with sudden progressive profound hearing loss resulting from Ramsay Hunt syndrome are reported. Case 1: A 63-year-old woman was admitted to Jichi Medical School Hospital with sudden, progressing deafness of the left ear, vertigo, sore throat, and hoarseness. An otoscopic examination revealed the external ear and the tympanic membrane to be normal. Pure-tone audiometry revealed profound deafness in the left ear. A horizontal nystagmus in the non-affected direction was observed by gaze nystagmus test. An endoscopic examination revealed herpetic vesicles and shallow ulcers on the lef

Considerations in the differentiation between brainstem lesions and sensori-neural hearing loss using auditory nerve-brainstem evoked responses.

When auditory nerve-brainstem evoked responses are used in neurological diagnosis, an important response parameter to be evaluated is brainstem transmission time - the time interval between the auditory nerve response (wave 1) and the response from the rostal brainstem (wave P4). Occasionally the only response wave present is wave P4 and its latency is prolonged. This can be compatible with a conductive or a sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), or a neurological (brain stem) lesion such as a retrocochlear hearing loss (RCHL). A conductive hearing loss can be excluded by otoscopic, audiometric an

[Transmeatal aerodynamical otoendoscopy for otitis media].

This study was designed to compare the efficacy of various methods of transmeatal aerodynamical otoendoscopy based on the examination of 60 patients presenting with acute suppurative otitis media (CSOM), chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), exudative and adhesive otitis media. Transmeatal aerodynamical otoendoscopy was performed with the use of otobarohydroendoscope. The results of the study demonstrate the advantages of the transmeatal aerodynamical otoendoscopic technique for the examination of the patients presenting with different clinical forms of otitis media.

Ototoxicity: a high risk to auditory function that needs to be monitored in drug development.

Hearing loss constitutes a major global health concern impacting approximately 1.5 billion people worldwide. Its incidence is undergoing a substantial surge with some projecting that by 2050, a quarter of the global population will experience varying degrees of hearing deficiency. Environmental factors such as aging, exposure to loud noise, and the intake of ototoxic medications are implicated in the onset of acquired hearing loss. Ototoxicity resulting in inner ear damage is a leading cause of acquired hearing loss worldwide. This could be minimized or avoided by early testing of hearing func

Otological complications following basal skull fractures.

A retrospective review is presented of 50 patients, with a basal skull fracture, who had radiological or clinical evidence of temporal bone involvement. The study looks at the incidence of significant otological symptoms reported during the admission and we review the subsequent patient management. We propose that all patients presenting with a head injury, and one or more of a number of symptoms characteristic of a temporal bone fracture, should automatically have an otological assessment. This will facilitate the early detection and subsequent follow up of potentially correctable middle ear

Endoscopic transcanal repair of temporomandibular joint herniation into the external auditory canal: literature review.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) herniation into the external auditory canal is a rare condition associated with anterior canal wall defects, most commonly due to a patent foramen of Huschke, trauma, or infection. The clinical presentation is variable and often non-specific, which may lead to misdiagnosis. High-resolution computed tomography is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective surgical planning. While open surgical repair remains standard, minimally invasive approaches have not been widely reported. An 81-year-old male presented with right-sided otalgia exacerbated by mandibular movem

Bilateral nervus intermedius neuralgia with neurovascular contact: a case report highlighting hypertension and eczema as potential precipitating factors.

BACKGROUND: Nervus intermedius neuralgia (NIN) is a rare craniofacial pain syndrome. Bilateral involvement is extremely uncommon, and the pathophysiology and precipitating factors of NIN remain poorly understood. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old female presented with a 3-month history of bilateral paroxysmal stabbing deep ear pain triggered by cold wind and auricular pressure, superimposed on a persistent dull ache. She had a 5-year history of hypertension, with poor blood pressure control (140-160/90-105 mmHg) for four months preceding symptom onset. Otoscopic examination revealed bilateral

Design and assessment of a 3D-printed wrist arthroscopy simulator.

INTRODUCTION: Wrist arthroscopy is a technically demanding procedure with a long learning curve, and many trainees report limited exposure during their surgical education. Simulation offers an accessible and ethical alternative to cadaver training. The objective of this study was to create a three-dimensional printed wrist arthroscopy simulator and to evaluate its ability to improve surgical performance. METHODS: A wrist CT scan was segmented to extract the anatomical structures, which were then modelled and printed. The wrist was produced using soft or rigid resin depending on each structure

Split Hand/Foot Malformation with Acquired Middle Ear Cholesteatoma Secondary to Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Cholesteatoma is a rare otologic manifestation in patients with split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM), and previously reported cases have predominantly focused on congenital auricular malformations and external auditory canal atresia rather than acquired middle ear lesions. We herein describe the case of an 8-year-old girl with clinically diagnosed SHFM who presented with left otalgia and persistent purulent otorrhoea. Otoscopic examination revealed middle ear granulation tissue, and high-resolution temporal bone imaging confirmed the presence of middle ear cholesteatoma complicated by tympanic-
