Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus Type I (HTLV-I) primarily infects CD4+ helper T cells. HTLV-I infection is clinically linked to the development of Adult T-cell Leukemia/Lymphoma and of HTLV-I Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis, among other illnesses. HTLV-I transmission can be either horizontal through cell-to-cell contact, or vertical through mitotic division of infected CD4+ T cells. It has been observed that HTLV-I infection has a high proviral load but a low rate of proviral genetic variation. This suggests that vertical transmission through mitotic division of infected cel

Human T-cell Lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1) was the first human retrovirus described. Some time after its discovery a group of diseases were related to this virus, such as, adult T-cell leukemia lymphoma (ATLL), HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) and HTLV-1 associated uveitis (HAU). In the nineties, HTLV-1 was associated to a severe eczema of children, called infective dermatitis (ID). Since then, several other skin manifestations have been observed in HTLV-1-infected individuals, particularly in patients with ATLL or HAM/TSP. However, according to some rep

Infection with human T-cell lymphotrophic virus-I (HTLV-I) is now a global epidemic, affecting 10 to 20 million people. This virus has been linked to life-threatening, incurable diseases, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), and HTLV-I associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), as well as several chronic illnesses, such as uveitis and dermatitis. The cumulative lifetime risk of developing these incurable diseases is approximately 5% in asymptomatic patients. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus that is endemic in certain regions of the world, and may account for significant morbidity and mortality among hospitalised patients. Sixty six HTLV-1 seropositive patients admitted to hospital with HTLV-1 associated diseases from 1995-99 were studied. HTLV-1 screening was done with ELISA and confirmed on western blot testing. There were 32 females (48.5%) and 34 males (51.5%). The mean age was 56 years and the age range was 9-89 years. The main associated diseases were tropical spastic paraparesis or HTLV-1 associated myelopathy

Infection with human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I) has been etiologically associated with two diseases: adult T cell leukemia and HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. Increasing evidence suggests that HTLV-I infection may be associated with immunosuppression and, as a consequence, affect the risk and expression of several other infectious diseases, of which the best studied are strongyloidiasis, tuberculosis, and leprosy. In strongyloidiasis, coinfection with HTLV-I appears to result in a higher rate of chronic carriage, an increased parasite load, and a

Human T cell lymphotropic virus I (HTLV-I) is the etiological agent for adult T cell leukemia and tropical spastic paraparesis (also termed HTLV-I-associated myelopathy). HTLV-I-infected peripheral blood T cells exhibit an initial phase of interleukin-2 (IL-2)-dependent growth; over time, by an unknown mechanism, the cells become IL-2-independent. Whereas the Jak kinases Jak1 and Jak3 and the signal transducer and activator of transcription proteins Stat3 and Stat5 are activated in normal T cells in response to IL-2, this signaling pathway was constitutively activated in HTLV-I-transformed cel

A Retroviral Coinfection Clinic was established in 1991 at Charity Hospital Medical Center of Louisiana to study patients dually infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human T lymphotropic virus (HTLV-I, HTLV-II). Eight patients were evaluated clinically, and by immunological and virological studies. Multiple neuromuscular diseases were observed, including tropical spastic paraparesis, polymyositis, and polyneuropathies. Only one patient developed AIDS. HIV-1 infected patients with HTLV-I, but not HTLV-II, coinfection have maintained stable CD4 counts, despite the fact that quant

The human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the causative agent of adult T cell leukemia (ATL) and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). In addition to tax and rex genes eight additional open reading frames are present in the pX region of HTLV-1. The possibility that these open reading frames can encode a protein in human cell lines persistently infected by HTLV-1 or in COS-1 cells transfected with a pX expressor plasmid was investigated. The results presented here indicate that tax and rex are the only proteins detected. Moreover, antibodies against prote

ATL is a rare but a highly aggressive T-cell neoplasm associated with human T-cell leukemia virus-1 (HTLV-1) infection. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) is a oncogenic retrovirus responsible for the development of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), but also for other non-malignant diseases, such as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). HTLV-1 has a higher prevalence in Japan, the Caribbean, South America, intertropical Africa, Romania, and northern Iran. ATL patients can have an extensive spectrum of neurological manifestations. In order to determine the prevalence of ocular lesions in HTLV-1 infected patients in Salvador Bahia, a transversal study was conducted on 140 HTLV-1 infected patients (90 asymptomatic and 50 tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-1-associated myelopathy) between June 2004 and November 2005. The ophthalmological examination included visual acuity measurement, ocular motility, biomicroscopy of the anterior and posterior chambers, intraocular pressure and evaluation of lachrymal secretion. Observation verified 4 (2.8%) out of 140 patients with uveitis (two patients had intermediate uveitis and two ha

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is a slowly progressive, inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS). We report a patient with transverse myelitis, who exhibited acute onset and rapid progression of the disease and whose symptoms resembled those observed in multiple sclerosis with spinal cord presentation. During neurological exacerbation of the condition, the HTLV-I proviral load in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) increased to 10 times that in the peripheral blood. This suggests that the accumulation of HTLV-I-

The correlation between virus load and specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) frequency during the chronic phase in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection has been found to be negative in cross-sectional studies. We report here that, in infection with the related retrovirus human T-cell leukaemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), the correlation is positive in asymptomatic carriers and zero in patients with the associated inflammatory disease HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). We demonstrate that the direction of the correlation may depend on the efficacy o

GATA3 is a specific T-cell transcription factor involved in the expression of T-cell receptor (TCR). In order to characterize the relationship between HTLV-1 infection, which has been reported to be associated with down-regulation of genes belonging to the TCR/CD3 complex, and the transcription factor GATA3, we evaluated, by semi-quantitative RT-PCR, the expression of GATA3 gene in HTLV-1 carriers and individuals with related diseases. The study included 4 asymptomatic carriers, 2 patients with adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATLL), 1 patient with HTLV-1 associated myelopathy (HAM)/tropical s

Human T cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) sequences were sought in labial salivary glands of patients with HTLV-I-associated myelopathy or tropical spastic paraparesis and of seropositive neurologically healthy carriers. HTLV-I proviral DNA was found by polymerase chain reaction amplification in DNA extracted from lip biopsies of every patient. Viral RNA was found by in situ hybridization in the acini epithelium, as well as in lymphocytic infiltrates. This observation suggests that HTLV-I expression in labial salivary glands could participate in the inflammatory lesions observed in these pat

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is the first human retrovirus to be associated with malignant disease--namely, adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma. HTLV-I has also been associated with several non-malignant conditions, notably the chronic neurodegenerative disorder, HTLV-I associated myelopathy (also known as tropical spastic paraparesis), infective dermatitis of children and uveitis. More recent evidence points to disease associations not previously linked to HTLV-I. Thus, the disease spectrum of HTLV-I is not fully known. HTLV-I has a worldwide distribution with major endemic foc

The human T-cell lymphotropic viruses type I and type II are closely related human retroviruses that have similar biological properties, genetic organization and tropism for T lymphocytes. Along with the simian T-cell lymphoma virus type I, they define the group of retroviruses known as the primate T-cell leukemia/lymphoma viruses. Initially identified in 1980, the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I has been implicated as the etiologic agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and of a degenerative neurologic disorder known as tropical spastic paraparesis or human T-cell lymphotropic virus t

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) was the first retrovirus which was directly associated with adult T-cell leukemia (ATL). Infection with HTLV-I can also lead to various other diseases, e.g. HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) and HTLV-I uveitis, possibly via induction of immunodeficiency or hyperreactivity against HTLV-I-infected cells. Epidemiological data have shown that patients who developed these diseases represent a small percentage of HTLV-I-infected individuals living in restricted geographical areas. The identification of HTLV-I-infected indiv

HTLV-I/II (human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I and II) infection is endemic in South Japan, Subsaharan Africa, the Caribbean and in regions of South America and of the United States. The infection almost always remains asymptomatic but is also associated with two distinct diseases: tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP), and adult T-cell leukemia (ATL). Although very rare in Europe, HTLV-I/II infection may occur in patients originating from endemic areas. We report the cases of four patients seropositive for HTLV-I/II, all of them living in Switzerland. Three of them originate from Zaire; the f
