A 52-year-old male with a history of spinal cord injury and cauda equina syndrome resulting in neurogenic bladder presented with chronic constipation and functional dyspepsia that was refractory to medical management. He was treated with an integrative East-West approach including acupuncture, trigger point injections, and Tui Na massage. Both his pain and constipation improved after a series of treatments, and this improvement was largely sustained at 2-year follow-up. This patient's symptoms are consistent with damage to the visceral parasympathetic nervous system. Interestingly, many studie…

Difficulties in emotional regulation are central to borderline personality disorder (BPD), which is characterized by heightened emotional reactivity and prolonged recovery from anger, often exacerbated by rumination. In this study, we examine the role of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) as a vital indicator of parasympathetic nervous system activity in BPD patients exposed to anger-inducing films. We recruited 35 BPD patients and 35 healthy controls, collecting self-reported emotional symptoms and physiological data during baseline, induction, recovery, and relaxation sessions. The findings …

BACKGROUND: Continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring (CIONM) via vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) is a new option for recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) protection during thyroid surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of VNS for CIONM and to assess its effects on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) through analyzing heart rate variability (HRV).
METHODS: In a prospective, nonrandomized controlled study 5 patients received VNS for CIONM and 5 were operated on with conventional intermittent intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). HRV was analyzed in accord with patient-specific refe

The lungs are innervated by both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which entails the activation of adrenergic and muscarinic receptors, respectively. Both the adrenergic and muscarinic receptors are G-protein-coupled receptors, and they share many similar signal transduction molecules. These receptors are widely expressed in the lung and the specific receptor expression can vary among the species. The location and the subtype of receptor expressed are important in the regulation of normal airway function. Acetylcholine released from the parasympathetic fibers activates the M…

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been studied as a non-invasive technique to characterize the autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation of the heart. Non-linear methods based on chaos theory have been used during the last decades as markers for risk stratification. However, interpretation of these nonlinear methods in terms of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity is not fully established. In this work we study linear and non-linear HRV indices during ANS blockades in order to assess their relation with sympathetic and parasympathetic activities. Power spectral content in low frequency (0.0

Exposure to light at night (LAN) has been associated with serious pathologies, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Recently we showed that 2 h of LAN impaired glucose tolerance in rats. Several studies have suggested that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays an important role in communicating these acute effects of LAN to the periphery. Here, we investigated the acute effects of LAN on the liver transcriptome of male Wistar rats. Expression levels of individual genes were not markedly affected by LAN, nevertheless pathway analysis revealed clustered changes in a number of endocrine pat

AIM: Alzheimer's disease affects several nervous structures involved with the autonomic nervous system. Therefore, the still scarce evaluation of the cardiac autonomic function in this disease is of great functional, clinical, prognostic and therapeutic relevance.
METHODS: Time- and frequency-domain variability of 5-min R-R interval series in supine and standing positions was comparatively evaluated in 22 Alzheimer's disease subjects, aged 60-87 years (mean +/- standard error of the mean, 79.6 +/- 1.4) with variable cognitive impairment, and 24 healthy individuals, aged 60-91 years (68.6 +/-

Alcohol is a recognized teratogen that affects various aspects of fetal development. Tissue that is particularly susceptible to its teratogenicity is neuronal tissue. The effect of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on the central nervous system has been extensively studied, yet the knowledge on the influence of PAE on the autonomic nervous system is scarce. The purpose of this article is to review the current state of knowledge about the impact of PAE on the autonomic nervous system. Studies conducted on the PAE animal model have shown that prenatal alcohol exposure is associated with significan

To elucidate the still-unknown pathogenesis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), an oral BSE challenge and sequential kill study was carried out on 56 calves. Relevant tissues belonging to the peripheral and central nervous system, as well as to the lymphoreticular tract, from necropsied animals were analysed by highly sensitive immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting techniques to reveal the presence of BSE-associated pathological prion protein (PrPSc) depositions. Our results demonstrate two routes involving the autonomic nervous system through which BSE prions spread by anterograde pa

Embryonic fishes provide valuable models for understanding the ontogeny of vertebrate cardiovascular regulation, yet the timing of autonomic control onset varies widely among species. In most teleosts, it is generally accepted that parasympathetic (vagal) influence over heart rate arises only near hatching, but historical observations suggest that killifishes deviate from this paradigm. Here, we characterized the development of vagal control in Gulf killifish (Fundulus grandis), a precocial species with an extended embryonic period. Using both direct mechanical and indirect vibrational startle

INTRODUCTION: Human beings and animals have been exposed to long-term artificial lighting environments to induce glucose metabolism disorder. Melatonin (MT) is involved in the regulation of glucolipid metabolism, and can prevent skeletal muscle wasting as well as sarcopenia-associated diseases. However, the effect of exogenous MT on skeletal muscle glucose metabolism and the involvement of the parasympathetic pathway have not been clarified.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of parasympathetic regulatory pathway in the mediating the effects of exogenous MT on skeletal muscle glucose metabol

This review aims to summarise the contemporary evidence for the presence and function of the parasympathetic innervation of the cerebral circulation with emphasis on the vertebral and basilar arteries (the posterior cerebral circulation). We consider whether the parasympathetic innervation of blood vessels could be used as a means to increase cerebral blood flow. This may have clinical implications for pathologies associated with cerebral hypoperfusion such as stroke, dementia and hypertension. Relative to the anterior cerebral circulation little is known of the origins and neurochemical pheno

Serotonin (5-HT) can stimulate the cholinergic system of the uterus by indirect actions on the modulation of reflexes and a direct action on smooth muscles. We investigated the role of 5-HT in the regulation of the cholinergic activity in the uterine parts of non-pregnant rabbits. The right vagus or pelvic nerve and the left sympathetic trunk were stimulated by an electrical field, and the uterine contractile activity was evaluated by measuring the amplitude and frequency of slow wave electromyogram (EMG), with the surface of microelectrodes applied to the uterus bottom, body, and cervix, resp

Motion sickness is a complex integration of responses from multiple physiological systems. Whether the changes that occur during the time course of motion sickness are mediated by the sympathetic or parasympathetic systems is still controversial. The present study evaluates alterations in R-R variability during experimental motion sickness in motion sick and non-motion sick subjects. Ten motion sick subjects and 7 non-motion sick subjects participated in the study. Power spectrum analysis of R-R variation was conducted for all subjects 10 min before a brief vestibular disorientation test (BVDT

A 46-year-old woman observed transient unilateral mydriasis during a classic migraine attack. One week later she experienced a similar episode after which anisocoria was persistent. Subsequent examination showed the clinical and pharmacologic features of a postganglionic parasympathetic paresis (Adie's tonic pupil). This case confirms the hypothesis that transient mydriasis accompanying migraine is due to interruption of parasympathetic innervation rather than sympathetic overactivity.

Cholinergic neurons of the pedunculopontine nucleus (Ch5) and laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (Ch6) monosynaptically activate dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra, zona compacta (A9), and ventral tegmental area (A10) via muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. Ch5 cells and Ch6 cells are inhibited by local injections of muscarinic agonists, suggesting the presence of autoreceptors. This review advances the hypothesis that the psychotogenic effects of antimuscarinics are triggered by disinhibition of Ch5 and Ch6 cells via their autoreceptors, and that these effects are distinct from the memory-b

The results of light and electron microscope studies of the ciliary ganglion of 5 monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) are described. The ganglion, measuring about 2 mm in length, was consistently observed to be attached to the nerve supplying the inferior oblique muscle at its origin from the oculomotor nerve. A very fine branch was found to connect the nasociliary nerve to the ganglion. The number of neurons varied from 2824 to 3545 after applying Abercrombie's (1946) correction. The mean of the maximum diameter was 43.1 microns (S.D. = 8.0), that of the minimum diameter was 30.5 microns (S.D. = 5.

We have demonstrated that hyperventilation-induced bronchoconstriction (HIB) is observed in sensitized rabbits, and that histamine may play a role in HIB. To investigate the role of parasympathetic neurotransmission in HIB, the effects of atropine and vagotomy on HIB were examined. Japanese white rabbits were sensitized with ovalbumin. They were then anesthetized and paralyzed with pancuronium, and then mechanically ventilated (TV: 7 ml/kg, RR: 40/min). The rabbits were divided into the following three groups: I) control group (n = 7), II) atropine-treated group (n = 6), III) bilateral vagotom

A patient is described with cholinergic urticaria (CU) in whom the symptoms could be provoked by gustatory stimuli. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a threshold of sweating (monitored by skin water vapour loss (SVL) measurements) at which CU can be provoked. Provocations with lemon and sal-ammoniac liquorice induced transient sweating differing both in degree and duration. Only 'doubly salted' liquorice, which caused the most intense sweat response, resulted in urticarial lesions. This findings suggest a threshold dependency for the induction of CU. SVL measurement may

The effect of atropine, a muscarinic cholinergic blocking agent, on the response of plasma pancreatic polypeptide (hPP) to the ingestion of beef was investigated. Six healthy subjects ingested 250 g broiled ground beef on three occasions. After beef ingestion alone, the expected biphasic plasma hPP response was observed. On the two other occasions atropine (intravenous bolus followed by infusion) was begun either at 4 or 60 min after the beginning of beef ingestion so as to coincide with the early (first) and late (second) phases of hPP response to beef ingestion. On both occasions plasma hPP
