In early 2020, the Medical Biology Laboratory of the Pasteur Institute of Cambodia isolated an unusually high number of fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Paratyphi A strains during its routine bacteriological surveillance activities in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. A public-health investigation was supported by genome sequencing of these Paratyphi A strains to gain insights into the genetic diversity and population structure of a potential outbreak of fluoroquinolone-resistant paratyphoid fever. Comparative genomic and phylodynamic analyses revealed the 2020 str…

Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi C causes enteric (paratyphoid) fever in humans. Its presentation can range from asymptomatic infections of the blood stream to gastrointestinal or urinary tract infection or even a fatal septicemia [1]. Paratyphi C is very rare in Europe and North America except for occasional travelers from South and East Asia or Africa, where the disease is more common [2, 3]. However, early 20th-century observations in Eastern Europe [3, 4] suggest that Paratyphi C enteric fever may once have had a wide-ranging impact on human societies. Here, we describe a draft Paraty

Typhoid and paratyphoid fever continue to significantly contribute to global morbidity and mortality. Disease burden is higher in low-and middle-income settings where surveillance programs are rare and little systematic information exists at population level. This review evaluates national, regional, and global trends in the incidence of typhoid fever and of related morbidity and mortality. A literature search in Medline, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted in June 2016, followed by screening and data extraction in duplicate. Studies reporting blood culture estimates of typhoid or paratyp…

We reported two familial clusters of paratyphoid fever after travel to China occurring in the same Yokohama ward from September to October 2002. Six Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A (S. Paratyphi A) strains, 3 each from 2 clusters, were isolated and their characteristics analyzed using phage typing, susceptibility to antibiotics, and patterns of restriction endonuclease-digested DNA fragments in agarose gel following pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Mutations in genes for gyrA and parC, which determine sensitivity to fluoroquinolones, were also investigated. All isolates showed …

The clinical course of infection by Salmonellae was compared between patients who had been vaccinated against typhoid fever using the Ty21a vaccine and those who had not. Of 2566 bacteriological confirmed cases 84% were infected with S typhi, 14% with S paratyphi B and 2% with S paratyphi A. Among patients with typhoid fever, 34% were treated in hospital, 3.5% had relapses, 5.4% developed complications and 1 patient died (0.05%). Among patients with paratyphoid fever, 18% were treated in hospital, 0.6% had relapses, 1.4% developed complications and there were no deaths. These figures were simi…
