Giant cell tumor of the salivary gland is extremely rare, with only 15 cases published in the English literature. The tumor characteristically contains a mixture of multinucleated giant cells, resembling osteoclasts of bone, and neoplastic mononuclear cells. In about half of the reported cases, there is an associated carcinomatous component. We are reporting an additional case of giant cell tumor of the parotid gland that was initially misinterpreted as an extraosseous osteosarcoma in the biopsy specimen. The histologic and immunohistochemical findings as well as a review of the literature wit

Neoplasms located in the parotid region, temporal bone, infratemporal fossa, and lateral skull base represent a challenge due to their difficult anatomic location and surrounding neurovascular structures. A variety of surgical approaches are appropriate to access this area, although several of them can place the auricular blood supply in danger. If the auricular blood supply is compromised, ischemia and, eventually, avascular necrosis of the auricle can occur. Auricular necrosis often can cause patients a delay in adjuvant radiation therapy and result in the need for additional reconstructive

Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign basaloid neoplasm of the salivary gland. There are four histopathological types of BCA: solid, tubular, trabecular, and membranous. It is known that focal squamous metaplasia may be seen in some BCAs, but it is rare to see extensive squamous metaplasia, especially with cellular atypia. Here, a 25-year-old male with right parotid swelling is presented. Ultrasonography revealed a 2-cm well defined mass in his parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA), performed prior to surgical excision, showed a highly cellular tumor composed of basaloid cells, formi

Salivary duct carcinoma is a rare and highly aggressive malignant neoplasm that frequently metastasises to other organs, but cutaneous metastasis is uncommon. There are only 6 cases reported in the literature with metastases to the skin and in all cases the tumour originates from the parotid gland. We present a case of skin metastases from the submandibular gland that was mistaken for basal cell carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of salivary duct carcinoma arising from the submandibular gland with cutaneous metastases.

Myoepithelioma is a rare neoplasm of the salivary glands, generally occurring in the parotid gland and less often in the minor accessory salivary gland of the oral cavity. The histological appearance includes solid, myxoid and reticular growth patterns. Vimentin and S-100 protein are very sensitive but non-specific immunohistochemical markers of neoplastic myoepithelium. Conservative surgery is the treatment of choice. A case of myoepithelioma of the minor salivary gland of the cheek with low grade malignancy is described, focusing on clinical behaviour, histopathological and immunohistochemic

Operations for neoplasms of the parotid salivary gland require from the surgeon a deep knowledge of the anatomical and topographic features of this area and technical skill, which puts it in a number of «jewelry» operations that require patience and concentration. The review is devoted to the topic of specific postoperative complications after parotidectomy or subtotal resection of the gland. These include relapses of tumors, paralysis or paresis of facial muscles, Frey syndrome, salivary fistulas or sialocele, violation of skin sensitivity, soft tissue deformity. The review presents the frequ

Parapharyngeal space tumors are rare tumors that make up about 0.5% to 1% of all head and neck neoplasms. The majority of parapharyngeal space tumors, which are usually benign, consist of salivary gland tumors and neurogenic tumors. Although the transcervical, transparotid or transmandibular approach is generally preferred for the excision of these tumors, the transoral approach, which is more advantageous in terms of cosmetics and function, can be applied in selected cases. This article presents a case in which the giant pleomorphic adenoma originating from the deep lobe of the parotid gland

INTRODUCTION: Sublingual salivary gland neoplasms are extremely rare, accounting for only 0.3-1% of all epithelial salivary gland tumors. Most of the sublingual tumors are malignant, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) being the most common histological types. The coexistence of two salivary gland tumors located in different major salivary glands is uncommon.
CASE REPORT: A rare case of two simultaneous tumors of the major salivary glands, one in the sublingual and the other in the contralateral parotid gland in a female patient is reported.
DISCUSSION: The diag

Cervicofacial actinomycosis still occurs infrequently and should be included in the differential diagnosis of neoplasms, and chronic suppurative and granulomatous lesions of the head and neck region. The authors present two cases of actinomycosis. Patient 1 was a 32-year-old man who was first seen with a firm, suppurative mass at his left frontal region. Patient 2 was a 36-year-old woman with an indurated mass at her left parotid area. Both patients were diagnosed histopathologically with cervicofacial actinomycosis, but each patient had a different clinical course and different response to an

Although acine cell neoplasms have for a long time been regarded as benign tumors, they are presently considered to represent the carcinomas. These rare tumors mainly affect the parotid glands, and only exceptionally involve other salivary glands. Clinically, acic cell carcinoma present as isolated tumors simulating a pleomorphic adenoma. The diagnosis is histopathological, and complete surgical removal of the tumor is the treatment of choice, with cervical lymphatic voiding and/or postoperative radiotherapy in selected cases. A prolonged patient follow-up is required, for the tumor may recur

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of the parotid gland is considered one of the commonest benign salivary gland neoplasms in both adults and pediatrics. However, metastatic pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) is extremely rare. In the past three decades, multiple cases were reported in the literature of MPA, where the metastatic phase has been preceded by a local recurrence for the majority of the cases. Metastases to the lungs, liver, bone, head and neck were reported. This paper will discuss a rare case presentation of MPA that metastasised solely to the face and scalp subcutaneous tissue with no other sites o

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a type of malignant salivary gland tumors that is extremely rare. EMC primarily affects major salivary glands, particularly the parotid gland, but minorsalivary glands are also affected. It contributes less than 0.5-1% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Multiple recurrences are relatively rare with EMC. There have been very few reports of multiplerecurrences in the literature. Biphasic tubular structures composed of externalclear cells and inner ductal cells are the distinguishing histopathological feature. However, histological variation is prevalent,

Salivary gland neoplasms represent less than 3% of all tumors in the general population of which benign adenomas account for 65.5%. Basal cell adenoma which is classified as a subtype of monomorphic adenomas accounts for 1-2% of all salivary gland epithelial tumors, and more than 80% of them arise in the major salivary glands, mostly the parotid gland and has female predominance reporting mostly in the elderly age groups. We here report a case of basal cell adenoma of trabecular type in a male patient of age 45 years in the minor salivary glands of left posterior palatal region.

A 73-year-old woman had a diagnosis of a plasmablastic lymphoma by the excision of the right parotid gland. Two years after the diagnosis, the patient underwent a whole-body C-methionine PET/CT in order to evaluate the amino acid avidity of a scalp metastasis and for plasmablastic lymphoma restaging. C-methionine uptake was detected in the scalp, in several bone sites, and in the cricoid cartilage. Plasmablastic lymphoma is a subtype of B-cell lymphoma with an aggressive behavior and a poor prognosis. C-methionine appears to be a promising tracer for paraprotein-producing neoplasms.

The accessory parotid gland (APG) is a common anatomical variant, situated adjacent to Stensen's duct and anatomically separate from the main body of the parotid gland. While often healthy, this tissue can give rise to neoplasms. This retrospective cohort analysis investigated the diagnostic features and therapeutic management of these rare tumours. The records of 647 patients with parotid gland disease treated at a single Maxillofacial Surgery Unit from 1988 to 2023 were analysed, selecting 17 patients with confirmed APG tumours for detailed analysis. The mean age of the included patients was

OBJECTIVES: To date 70 cases of oncocytic carcinomas (OCs) have been described in 55 reports. We describe an OC of the parotid gland in a 56-year-old man with simultaneous breast cancer.
METHODS: In June 2006, a 56-year-old man was referred to the Otorhinolaryngology Division for a painless right preauricolar mass. The facial nerve was functionally normal. Total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation was performed. In January 2007, the patient was referred to the Surgical Division for a left mammary nodule. Total mastectomy with axillary lymphoadenectomy was performed.
RESULTS: The mas

OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of fine-needle biopsy (FNB) of salivary gland neoplasms via ultrasound (US) or palpation guidance by an otolaryngologist in a community practice.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Community otolaryngology practice.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis was conducted for all office-based salivary gland FNBs from a community practice from 2005 through 2018. There were 433 FNBs performed among 370 patients. The likelihood of achieving a diagnostic result based on method (US vs palpation guidance) was calculated. Of this cohort, 196 cases

BACKGROUND: Nodular fasciitis (NF) is a clonal, self-limited proliferation that has only rarely been described in the parotid gland. Because of its potential to mimic benign and malignant parotid neoplasms clinically, radiographically, and cytomorphologically, NF is often managed with unnecessary surgery, which is associated with a risk for significant surgical complications. The purpose of this study is to present the clinical and cytomorphologic findings for NF of the parotid gland by fine-needle aspiration (FNA).
METHODS: The pathology archives of the authors' respective institutions were …

Certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), notably HPV type 16, are associated with flat or inverted proliferative lesions of the cervix uteri that can progress to malignancy. As a first step towards the serological study of the epidemiology of HPV, we have synthesized the entire amino acid sequences of the 2 major viral capsid proteins of HPV type 16, L1 and L2, as a set of 66 synthetic 20-residue peptides with an overlap of 5 amino acids. The peptides were tested for reactivity with IgA, IgG and IgM antibodies in the sera of 30 patients with HPV-16-carrying cervical neoplasms. Both IgG and

Non-lymphoid mesenchymal neoplasms of salivary gland origin are rare, accounting for 1.9-5% of major salivary gland tumors. We describe the clinico-pathologic features of 18 cases of mesenchymal neoplasms of the major salivary glands experienced at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from 1998 to 2004. Mesenchymal neoplasms accounted for 3.4% of the total of 524 major salivary gland tumors. The parotid gland was the preponderant site (15 cases). Thirteen tumors were benign, constituting 3.5% of the total of 371 benign neoplasms. Schwannomas were the most common benign tumors (six cases), follow
