Association between childhood trauma, cognition, and psychosocial function in a large sample of partially or fully remitted patients with bipolar disorder and healthy participants.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) are frequently reported by patients with bipolar disorder (BD), but it is unclear whether and how CT contribute to patients' cognitive and psychosocial impairments. We aimed to examine the impact of CT on cognition and psychosocial functioning in a large sample of 345 patients with BD and 183 healthy control participants (HC) using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, neurocognitive tests and ratings of mood symptoms and functioning. RESULTS: Patients showed broad cognitive impairments across memory, attention and executive function and functional disability d

iKNOWgynetics - A web-based learning concept to empower primary care gynecologists to participate in the care of patients with a family history of breast and ovarian cancer.

Familial cancer burden and genetics play an increasingly important role in the early detection and prevention of gynecological cancers. However, people with hereditary cancer risks are often identified late when they already have cancer. We aimed at developing and evaluating a training concept for primary care gynecologists-iKNOWgynetics-to improve their knowledge and awareness of genetic cancer syndromes and their ability to identify patients with increased familial cancer risks based on up-to-date evidence and current guidelines (in Germany, primary care includes all doctors treating patient

Comparing myofascial meridian activation during single leg vertical drop jump in patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and healthy participants.

BACKGROUND: Muscles work synergistically to support the body during landing. Myofascial meridians have been described to classify muscles into functional synergies. The role that these functional lines plays in positioning the trunk and lower extremity of patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and healthy athletes during drop landing tasks remains unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this study was to compare the front and back functional lines (FFL and BFL) muscle activation in patients with ACLR and healthy participants during single leg vertical drop jump (SLV

The MS@Work study: a 3-year prospective observational study on factors involved with work participation in patients with relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common cause of neurological disability in young and middle-aged adults. At this stage in life most people are in the midst of their working career. The majority of MS patients are unable to retain employment within 10 years from disease onset. Leading up to unemployment, many may experience a reduction in hours or work responsibilities and increased time missed from work. The MS@Work study examines various factors that may influence work participation in relapsing-remitting MS patients, including disease-related factors, the working environment

Folate, homocysteine, vitamin B12, and polymorphisms of genes participating in one-carbon metabolism in late-onset Alzheimer's disease patients and healthy controls.

AIMS: We screened 378 late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) patients and 308 matched controls for the presence of the common MTHFR 677C>T, MTRR 66A>G, MTR 2756 A>G, and TYMS 28 bp repeat polymorphisms, searching for association with disease risk and age at onset. Moreover, we searched for correlation between each of the studied polymorphisms and available data on plasma homocysteine (Hcy), serum folate, and vitamin B12 values. RESULTS: We observed a significant increased frequency of the MTHFR 677T allele (0.48 vs. 0.42; p=0.019) and of MTHFR 677CT (OR=1.46; 95%CI=1.03-2.06) and TT genotypes

Ventricular tachycardia with participation of the left bundle-Purkinje system in patients with structural heart disease: identification of slow conduction during sinus rhythm.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic left ventricular tachycardia (VT) originating from the left posterior fascicle can be eliminated by ablation at sites with abnormal diastolic potentials (DPs) during sinus rhythm. We investigated whether such DPs can also be recorded in patients with structural heart disease and VT involving the left bundle-Purkinje system. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight patients (mean age 67 +/- 11 years) with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (n = 5) or prior myocardial infarction (n = 3) presented with VT involving the left bundle-Purkinje system (cycle length 376 +/- 45 ms). Three types of V

Epstein-Barr virus-infected B cells expanding in germinal centers of infectious mononucleosis patients do not participate in the germinal center reaction.

To assess the impact of the germinal center (GC) reaction on viral spread in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, we isolated EBV(+) GC B cells from the tonsils of two infectious mononucleosis patients, sequenced their rearranged V genes, and determined expression of the EBV latency genes EBV nuclear antigen 2 and latent membrane protein 1. Most EBV(+) GC B cells belonged to clones of cells harboring somatically mutated V gene rearrangements. Ongoing somatic hypermutation, the hallmark of the GC reaction, was seen only in uninfected GC B cell clones, not in EBV(+) B cell clones. Thus, in infect

When patients seek information about voluntary assisted dying in an institutional non-participating specialist palliative care service: outcomes and learnings.

BACKGROUND: Voluntary assisted dying (VAD) legislation has been implemented across all Australian states iteratively since 2019, yet the interface between VAD and palliative care remains contentious, particularly within healthcare organisations that hold policies of institutional non-participation (INP). A paucity of data exists on the experience of patients who pursue VAD when under the care of specialist palliative care services (SPCSs) operating under INP. AIM: To determine the incidence, characteristics and outcomes of patients accessing VAD information within a SPCS with a policy of INP.

Effect of family participation in sensory stimulation for patients with disorders of consciousness after traumatic brain injury prognosis: randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: The high incidence of consciousness disturbance in patients with traumatic brain injury has become a public health and economic concern. Therefore, implementing effective rehabilitation to facilitate awakening in patients with disorders of consciousness is essential. Sensory stimulation, recognized as safe, effective, and affordable, is gaining attention for awakening patients. Additionally, involving family in sensory stimulation is believed to enhance consciousness levels in TBI patients with disorders of consciousness. Thus, we propose a multi-center randomized study to assess t
