With reading development, some children fail to learn to read fluently. However, reading fluency difficulty (RFD) has not been fully investigated. The present study explored the underlying mechanism of RFD from the aspect of visual attention span. Fourteen Chinese children with RFD and fourteen age-matched normal readers participated. The visual 1-back task was adopted to examine visual attention span. Reaction time and accuracy were recorded, and relevant d-prime (d') scores were computed. Results showed that children with RFD exhibited lower accuracy and lower d' values than the controls did

PURPOSE: Although children with microstrabismus demonstrate stereoscopic abilities when assessed with clinical tests containing visible contours (local stereopsis), severe stereoscopic impairments are reported when using random-dot stereogram (RDS). This differential performance may be associated with the decreasing interocular correlation resulting from the central suppression present in the deviated eye, affecting global stereopsis to a greater extent.
METHODS: To test this hypothesis, stereoscopic performance on tasks using contour/local (experiment 1), RDS depth (experiment 2), and RDS sh

All primates depend for their survival on being able to rapidly learn about and recognize objects. Objects may be visually detected at multiple positions, sizes, and viewpoints. How does the brain rapidly learn and recognize objects while scanning a scene with eye movements, without causing a combinatorial explosion in the number of cells that are needed? How does the brain avoid the problem of erroneously classifying parts of different objects together at the same or different positions in a visual scene? In monkeys and humans, a key area for such invariant object category learning and recogn

The authors examined the relationship of hostility with (a) affective ratings of pictures and (b) state affects evoked by task-induced stress in 95 healthy men and women 22-37 years of age. Pictures were from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS; P. J. Lang, M. M. Bradley, & B. N. Cuthbert, 1999). Stressors included a startle task, mental arithmetic task, and choice-deadline reaction time task. The circumplex model of affect was used to structure the self-reported state affects. The authors found that hostility was associated with displeasure, high arousal, and low dominance rating

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 37-year-old woman was admitted with total loss of vision of the left eye within 24 hours. Additionally, she complained about fatigue, headache, chills, fever, muscle pain and neck stiffness since 4 days. At admission, the body temperature was 38.7 degrees C. Neurological examination revealed papilledema and meningism.
INVESTIGATIONS: Ophthalmologic findings were consistent with a papillitis. The vision was lost, the pattern-shift checkerboard visual evoked potentials were not measurable. MRI of the brain and the optical nerve was without pathological findings

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the visual acuity measured by visual tracking and by preferential looking.
METHODS: We examined 51 healthy full-term infants between three and 93 days of age. Visual acuity was tested with two different methods. One method was visual tracking (smooth and saccadic pursuit), recorded with an infrared photo-oculographic technique. For stimulation of visual tracking a square of 9.4 degrees of visual angle with vertical gratings (0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 cycles per degree) moved at a constant velocity of 7.5 degrees/sec. for 38 sec. on a surface o

In a previously conducted randomized placebo-controlled trial, we were able to demonstrate significant visual field enlargement induced by restitution therapy in patients with cerebral lesions [Kasten, E., Wuest, S., Behrens-Bamann, W., & Sabel, B. A. (1998c). Computer-based training for the treatment of partial blindness. Nature Medicine, 4, 1083-1087.]. Visual field training was performed on a computer monitor for 1 hr per day over a period of 6 months. Since the procedure included only stimulation with white light, in the present study we investigated if this simple detection training had a

Pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEPs) were recorded from 111 patients classified as having possible, probable or definite multiple sclerosis. Patients were stimulated with a checkerboard pattern using high and low luminances in order to test the hypothesis that an attenuated pattern luminance increases the detection rate of PVEP abnormalities. With increasing certainty of diagnosis, there was a concomitant increase in the incidence of PVEP abnormalities. However, there was no evidence that stimulating with a lower luminance pattern enhanced the sensitivity of the test. The same findings wer

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) to chess pattern reversion were studied in 17 children with optic neurites during the acute stage and in the course of convalescence 1-2 months and 1-3 years after the disease onset. Coarse VEP changes were detected in the patients during the acute stage of optic neuritis. A positive time course of VEP was followed up in late periods after the acute attack of the disease. Despite normalization of vision acuity, no complete restoration of VEP to small-cell chess patterns was seen. The findings evidence that studies of VEP to chess pattern reversion should be carri

Twelve normal subjects and a prosopagnosic patient were tested in a classification task of a random display of well-known among unknown faces. Each face was presented several times. Event-related potentials (ERP) and reaction time (RT) were studied as a function of face repetition and familiarity. For normal subjects, the greater the repetition level, the more positive ERPs were on both hemispheres: between 250 and 600 msec. Moreover, the familiarity of faces modified ERPs between 350 and 600 msec. In contrast for the patient, the greater the repetition, the more negative the ERPs were. This "

Four experimental tasks were employed to explore the initial stages of visual information processing in a group of dyslexic boys and in a group of normal control subjects ranging in age from 8 to 14 years. Two tasks involved visual backward masking; the other two were temporal integration tasks. The backward-masking tasks yielded evidence of slower rates of visual information processing in dyslexic children; the temporal-integration tasks yielded evidence of longer duration of visible persistence in dyslexic children. This effect was most evident in situations in which sequential stimuli impin

Recent studies suggest that familiar objects benefit from faster working memory (WM) encoding - the transformation of fragile perceptual representations into durable WM representations. This observation led contemporary WM models to postulate a long-term memory (LTM) "template-matching" mechanism, which speeds standard encoding processes. However, faster encoding may also be caused by higher attentional priority for familiar objects. In the current study, we examined whether LTM template matching can be dissociated from selective attention. We used a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation task and a

IMPORTANCE: Life expectancy is a key measure of overall population health. Life expectancy estimates for youth with HIV in the US are needed in the current HIV care and treatment context to guide health policies and resource allocation.
OBJECTIVE: To compare life expectancy between 18-year-old youth with perinatally acquired HIV (PHIV), youth with nonperinatally acquired HIV (NPHIV), and youth without HIV.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Using a US-focused adolescent-specific Monte Carlo state-transition HIV model, we simulated individuals from age 18 years until death. We estimated proba

One account of the characteristic holistic processing of faces and objects of expertise posits that it arises from a learned attention to the whole, rendering it difficult to attend only to parts of stimuli. We tested whether task-context-induced attentional biases for the top or bottom part of a stimulus alter holistic processing of faces. We induced attentional biases by manipulating the probability (75% or 25%) that the top or bottom part would be task-relevant in a modified composite part-judgement task. Manipulating the proportion of trials in which the top/bottom region was task-relevant

In typical adults, recognizing both spoken and written words is thought to be served by a process of competition between candidates in the lexicon. In recent years, work has used eye-tracking in the visual world paradigm to characterize this competition process over development. It has shown that both spoken and written word recognition continue to develop through adolescence (Rigler et al., 2015). It is still unclear what drives these changes in real-time word recognition over the school years, as there are dramatic changes in language, the onset of reading instruction, and gains in domain ge

How does attention enhance neural representations of goal-relevant stimuli while suppressing representations of ignored stimuli across regions of the brain? While prior studies have shown that attention enhances visual responses, we lack a cohesive understanding of how selective attention modulates visual representations across the brain. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while participants performed a selective attention task on superimposed stimuli from multiple categories and used a data-driven approach to test how attention affects both decodability of category inf

Fluency is one of many cues that are involved in memory decisions. To date, however, the extent to which fluency-based decisions are preserved in amnesia is not yet clear. In this study, we tested and found differences in how patients with amnesia (n=8) and control participants (n=16) use fluency when making recognition decisions (Experiment 1). Our results suggested that these differences could be due to changes in the readiness with which patients attribute the subjective feeling of fluency to pre-exposure when an alternative explanation is available (i.e., the perceptual quality of the item

BACKGROUND: There are two accounts of categorization performance in autism: that there is an impairment in prototype formation (Klinger & Dawson, 2001) and that there is an impairment in processing features held in common between stimuli (Plaisted, O'Riordan, & Baron-Cohen, 1998). These accounts, together with central coherence theory (Frith, 1989; Frith & Happé, 1994), imply a reduced or absent prototype effect in autism.
METHOD: Children with autism or Asperger syndrome (n = 15) matched on age, gender, and verbal mental age with typically developing children (n = 15) completed a picture rec

Prior expectation powerfully shapes perception, yet its effects have been notoriously difficult to characterize due to the confounding influence of attention. In this study, we systematically investigated expectation's influence on conscious visual object recognition while carefully disentangling it from attentional effects. Across three experiments, we observed that expectation's effect varied markedly depending on the experimental context. When expectation was manipulated in isolation, it enhanced recognition sensitivity, mirroring the effects of attention. However, when expectation and atte

Visual recognition is supported in humans by category-selective neural activity in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC). While category-selectivity is generally defined as an increase in neural activity (i.e., larger responses) for a given visual category of interest, category-selective decreases have also been reported yet generally ignored. Here we use electrophysiological intracerebral recordings across the VOTC of a large human sample (N = 140; >11k recording sites) to characterize and compare category-selective neural decreases relative to increases, in response to images of faces.
