School-based social relationships and children's psychological health: Examining heterogeneity by relationship source and child gender.

School-based social relationships play a significant role in shaping children's psychological health. However, it is unclear whether relationships with peers and teachers have differential effects, and whether these effects vary by gender. Using data from 2,168 individuals (9,608 person-waves), aged 7-8 at baseline and followed across five waves of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), this study examined the association between the quality of school-based social relationships and psychological health. Fixed effects models were used to account for unobserved individual-level conf

Stakeholder Perspectives on the Role of Peer Mentors in the Implementation of Long-Acting Antiretroviral Therapy for Use by Adolescents and Young People in Western Kenya: Findings from a Formative Study, KuwaFree! LiveFree!

Long-acting antiretroviral treatment (LA ART) is a forthcoming option for adolescents and young people living with HIV (AYPLHIV), but perspectives on using peer mentors to implement LA ART for AYPLHIV are unknown. We conducted seven focus group discussions (n = 58 participants) from November 2021 to April 2022 in Kenya with four stakeholder groups, including AYPLHIV, healthcare providers, advocates, and policymakers. We used inductive coding and thematic analysis. Our stakeholders articulated peer mentors are crucial in the implementation of LA ART for AYPLHIV in leading communication, facilit

Perspectives and Experiences of Stakeholders on Self-Disclosure of Peers in Mental Health Services.

With the movement towards recovery-oriented mental health (MH) services, individuals with MH lived-experience are increasingly employed as peer providers (peers). Peers are unique in that they bring knowledge from experience and eye-level connection to service users that enhance the quality of services and humanize MH systems' culture. In Israel, hundreds of peers are employed in various roles and settings across the MH system. However, peer integration into MH services faces challenges. One issue involves the use of self-disclosure (SD) in MH services which varies with explicitness across rol

Comparing the Rates of Early Childhood Victimization across Sexual Orientations: Heterosexual, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Mostly Heterosexual.

Few studies have examined the rates of childhood victimization among individuals who identify as "mostly heterosexual" (MH) in comparison to other sexual orientation groups. For the present study, we utilized a more comprehensive assessment of adverse childhood experiences to extend prior literature by examining if MH individuals' experience of victimization more closely mirrors that of sexual minority individuals or heterosexuals. Heterosexual (n = 422) and LGB (n = 561) and MH (n = 120) participants were recruited online. Respondents completed surveys about their adverse childhood experience

Race, ethnicity, and eating disorder recognition by peers.

We investigated racial/ethnic stereotyping in the recognition and referral of eating disorders with 663 university students. We explored responses to problem and eating disorder recognition and health care referrals after subjects read a vignette concerning a patient of a different race/ethnic background presenting with eating disorders. A series of three 4 × 3 ANOVAs revealed significant main effects for eating disorders across all three outcome variables. There were no significant main effects across the four different race/ethnicity conditions and no significant race by condition interactio

Paying to belong: when does rejection trigger ingratiation?

Societies and social scientists have long held the belief that exclusion induces ingratiation and conformity, an idea in contradiction to robust empirical evidence linking rejection with hostility and aggression. The classic literatures on ingratiation and conformity help resolve this contradiction by identifying circumstances under which rejection may trigger efforts to ingratiate. Jointly, findings from these literatures suggest that when people are given an opportunity to impress their rejecters, ingratiation is likely after rejection experiences that are harsh and that occur in important s

Socialization, personality development, and the child's environments: comment on Vandell (2000).

Although many socialization agents influence children's behavior (D. L. Vandell, 2000), the evidence (e.g., from intervention studies) indic … the prevailing view. The theory attributes outside-the-home socialization to identification with a peer group and assimilation of group norms, but attributes nongenetic variation in personality to differentiation within the group. The latter proposition is still largely untested but other aspects of the theory are well supported by evidence.

Therapeutic groups for patients with spinal cord injuries.

A preliminary study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of therapeutic patient groups in a rehabilitation setting. A spinal cord knowledge "Inventory" test was designed to evaluate the success of the group method in disseminating information to patients. The first part of this test assesses the patient's knowledge about body physiology and functioning, health care, and community resources. The second part attempts to evaluate the patient's feelings regarding his body image, sexual attractiveness, and family relationships. The test was administered to 31 spinal cord injured patients up

Network based associations between peer rejection and adolescent depression: evidence from general population and clinical samples.

BACKGROUND: Peer rejection is a significant risk factor for adolescent depression, but most studies have examined their associations treating them as unitary constructs. Considering their conceptional complexity, our study employs network analysis to examine the associations between different types of peer rejection and specific depressive symptoms at the dimension level and their changes from the general population to clinical samples. METHODS: A total of 23,995 adolescents from general population (primary dataset, 11,577 males, age = 13.90 ± 2.19) were recruited through online advertisement

From learners to teachers: a peer-assisted learning model in undergraduate orthopedic education: a quasi-experimental study.

Contemporary medical education emphasizes student-centered approaches that better align with modern learners. Peer-assisted learning (PAL) has proven effective in enhancing knowledge, clinical skills, engagement, and professional development. Although widely integrated into Western European curricula, its implementation remains limited in countries such as Romania. This study aimed to evaluate PAL within undergraduate orthopedic training, focusing on its benefits for both learners and peer instructors, as well as its potential to inform teaching practices. A total of 50 medical students partic

Digital Health-Based Peer Support Ecosystem for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Vietnam (VALID II Study): Multistakeholder Cocreation and Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with fetal overgrowth, increased risks of perinatal morbidity and mortality, and long-term complications for mother and child, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Innovative, peer-based digital health interventions are emerging globally as a potential approach to assist and empower women in effective self-care and well-being during pregnancy. However, there remains substantial potential to develop and evaluate culturally sensitive digital health interventions for pregnant women with GDM, especially in low- and midd

Who is the expert? A process guide to incorporate lived/living experience into directed acyclic graphs: an applied example from HIV research.

AIM: Causal inference relies on correct background knowledge, which epidemiologists generally understand to come from academic experts. Our community-engaged study augments scientific domain knowledge with lived/living experience to co-construct the directed acyclic graph (DAG) underpinning our team's research question about ageing and HIV. We outline our team's process for co-creating the community-based DAG and describe qualitative reflections from team members regarding these methods. Our overarching goal was to expand expert knowledge to include community expertise by engaging peer researc

Facilitated Peer Discussion for Promoting Better Resident Wellness in Anesthesia Trainees: Qualitative Program Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia residents experience nonroutine clinical events during perioperative patient care, including workplace stressors or adverse incidents that may cause physical and emotional stress. These events can lead to burnout and negative mental health outcomes. Burnout and depression rates are lower when residents have adequate support systems within their workplace. Better resident wellness (BREW) Rounds are a weekly 1-hour peer discussion for anesthesia residents, facilitated by a registered psychologist at our institution. Although shown to improve residents' well-being, a deeper

Why They Speak Up (or Don't): Reasons For and Against Cybergrooming Disclosure Among Adolescent Victims.

The ubiquitous use of information and communication technologies among adolescents carries the risk of exposure to online victimization during this vulnerable stage of development, including cybergrooming as a form of sexual victimization. Although established in traditional abuse research, studies on disclosure processes in the specific context of cybergrooming victimization are still pending. The present study exploratively investigated reasons for and against disclosure following cybergrooming victimization in the subsample of n = 400 victims (44.1%; Mage = 15.48 years, girls: 57.5%) from N

From victims to aggressors: the link between childhood family abuse and adolescent peer bullying.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent bullying and childhood family abuse are widespread social issues with lasting negative effects on victims' psychological health and behavior. Research suggests that childhood family abuse increases the likelihood of adolescents engaging in bullying. However, the dynamic relationship between these two phenomena, particularly the mechanisms involved, has been understudied. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore how childhood family abuse leads to adolescent bullying behavior through the mediating roles of loneliness and delinquent peer affiliation, offering a theoretical b

Dynamic friendship processes related to learning interest: Moderating by class-level social-emotional competency.

BACKGROUND: Learning interest is an intrinsic motivation that dynamically interacts with friendships. Students alter their learning interests to assimilate with their friends and actively establish friendships on the basis of similar interests. These processes do not operate in isolation but rather in the broader peer context. Class-level social-emotional competency (SEC) is a contextual characteristic that influences students' social and learning processes. AIMS: This study used reading and mathematics as examples to examine the moderating role of class-level SEC in the friendship influence
