KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: It may be possible to extend the use of the robotic arm to pelvic and acetabular surgery leading to safe, repeatable screw placement, and less radiation exposure for patients, surgeons and OR staff.
ABSTRACT: In this case, a novel, robotic-assisted technique was used to place a sacroiliac screw in a patient with unstable injuries of the pelvic ring. Intraoperative and postoperative fluoroscopic, radiographic, and CT imaging demonstrated a safely positioned 6.5 mm cannulated screw without unplanned cortical violation or impingement on neurovascular structures. Clustering algorithms such as k-means and agglomerative hierarchical clustering (HCA) may provide a unique opportunity to analyze time-series kinematic data. Here we present an approach for determining number of clusters and which clustering algorithm to use on time-series lumbar and pelvis kinematic data. Cluster evaluation measures such as silhouette coefficient, elbow method, Dunn Index, and gap statistic were used to evaluate the quality of decision making. The result show that multiple clustering evaluation methods should be used to determine the ideal number of clusters and algorithm sui…

BACKGROUND: Aggressive angiomyxoma is a very rare mesenchymal tumor most commonly found in the pelvic and perineal regions. Although many are estrogen and progesterone hormone receptor positive, the pathogenesis is unknown. Due to its rarity, there is a paucity of literature relating to this pathology. This article presents a case series on the management of aggressive angiomyxoma of the pelvis.
OBJECTIVE: To present a 35-year experience managing aggressive angiomyxoma of the pelvis.
DESIGN: This was a retrospective single-system analysis.
SETTINGS: This study was conducted at a quaternary …

Fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma (FM) is a rare bone tumor mimicking other fibrocartilaginous lesions on imaging and histologically. Hence, it is difficult to diagnose this entity especially on small biopsies. In this article, we report a case of FM mimicking desmoplastic fibroma on biopsy. A 36-year-old male presented with pain in the left hip. Imaging showed a large expansile lytic lesion involving the acetabulum and pubis. The differential diagnosis was suggestive of giant cell tumor, aneurysmal bone cyst, intraosseous desmoplastic fibroma, and chondrosarcoma. Biopsy revealed a low-grade spi

Substantial differences among the pelves of anthropoids have been central to interpretations of the selection pressures that shaped extant hominoids, yet the evolution of the hominoid pelvis has been poorly understood due to the scarcity of fossil material. A recently discovered partial hipbone attributed to the 10 million-year-old fossil ape Rudapithecus hungaricus from Rudabánya, Hungary, differs from the hipbones of cercopithecids and earlier apes in functionally significant ways. Comparisons were made to extant and other fossil anthropoids using combination of non-landmark-based and linear…

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the indications, operative course, and outcomes in eight pediatric patients who underwent occiput-to-pelvis (O-P) spinal arthrodesis.
SUMMARY: Spinal arthrodesis from the occiput to pelvis is needed for some children with extensive spine deformity. There are few reports of patients with O-P arthrodesis.
METHODS: We reviewed records of pediatric patients who underwent spinal arthrodesis to treat spine deformity between 1987 and 2017 at one institution. Eight patients (six girls) who underwent staged O-P arthrodesis were identif…

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the renal pelvis is a particularly rare tumor that accounts for a minor portion of renal malignancies and is aggressive with an unfavorable prognosis. It is usually diagnosed after surgery and at advanced stages as it does not possess specific clinical and radiological properties. The pathological examination of a 38-year-old female patient who had undergone nephrectomy due to a nonfunctioning right kidney caused by long-standing staghorn calculus revealed moderately differentiated renal pelvis SCC invading the renal parenchyma. The patient who experienced seve…

Spontaneous renal pelvic haematomas are rare, often mimicking symptoms of other pathologies such as a renal tumour or renal calculi. Spontaneous renal haematoma was first reported by Bonet in 1679 and later described by Wunderlich in 1856. We present the case of a young female patient with no known comorbidities who presented with spontaneous renal pelvis haematoma. Misinterpretation of this finding can lead to erroneous diagnoses.

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric pelvic trauma is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Current classifications do not take into account age-dependent quantitative differences of the pediatric pelvis making accurate diagnosis of pathologic diastasis of the pubic symphysis, sacroiliac (SI) joints, and triradiate cartilage difficult. The purpose of this study was to establish age-based normative values for the width of the pubic symphysis, SI joints, and the triradiate cartilage of the pediatric pelvis.
METHODS: All computed tomographic (CT) scans of the abdomen and pelvis from patients b…

Extrarenal pelvis is an anatomical variant that appears as a large hypoechoic mass just outside the renal sinus and can be confused with hydronephrosis, especially on a point-of-care renal ultrasound. Unlike hydronephrosis, it is not associated with dilated calyces, parenchymal thinning, hydroureter, or enlarged kidney per se.

We report an extremely rare case of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the renal pelvis associated with an incompletely duplicated renal pelvis and ureter. A 71-year-old woman presented with left lower back pain and gross hematuria. Urinary cytology showed atypical squamous cells. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and retrograde pyelography revealed left incompletely duplicated renal pelvis and ureter and a mass in the left upper renal pelvis. A clinical diagnosis of left renal pelvic cancer was made and the patient underwent total nephroureterectomy. Histological examination of th…

Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare disease characterized by the replacement of normal tissue with fibrosis and/or inflammation. In this case, a 68-year-old man presented with RPF in the pelvis, a rare location for this disease. Biopsies were performed, which showed elevated levels of C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and, most importantly, immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4). It has been postulated that IgG4-related sclerosing disease is a systemic disease. Treatment has been successful with systemic corticosteroids.

Intestinal type villous adenomas are uncommon in the genitourinary tract. Most reported cases have been located in the urinary bladder or urachus. Villous adenoma arising in the renal pelvis or ureter is very rare. We present a case of an 81-year-old female who presented with difficulty voiding and mucosuria. A computed tomography scan identified right-sided hydronephrosis, renal parenchymal atrophy, nonobstructing calculi and a lower pole renal mass. She underwent open right nephrectomy. Histopathologic examination of the kidney revealed an intestinal type villous adenoma of the renal pelvis …

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of tubulovillous renal pelvis adenocarcinoma.
METHODS/RESULTS: An 81 year-old patient presented at Emergency Department with sepsis. CT scan showed a staghorn calculus with signs suggestive of pyonefrosis. A nephrectomy was performed and pathological exam revealed tubulovillous renal pelvis adenocarcinoma.
CONCLUSIONS: Renal pelvis adenocarcinoma is a rare disease. It is usually accompanied by chronic urinary infections, on inflammatory state and staghorn calculi. The best therapeutic option is nephrectomy and the prognosis is poor.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome is associated with tumors different from the benign ovary tumor, but it has never been described in association to transitional cell carcinoma.
CASE REPORT: A female 73 year-old patient presenting pleural effusion nonmetastatic associated with renal pelvis transitional cell carcinoma that resolved and did not recur after radical nephroureterectomy.
COMMENTS: Renal pelvis transitional cell carcinoma can result in the Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome. Although being a rare clinical entity, the identification of such syndrome can result in an accurate diagnosis, leadi…

OBJECTIVES: This cystic hamartoma of the renal pelvis is a very unfrequent benign tumor. We report one case emphasizing its histology and performed a bibliographic review.
METHODS: Mid age female patient with the incidental diagnosis of a renal mass taking up the pelvis.
RESULTS: A radical nephrectomy was performed with the pathologic report of cystic hamartoma of the renal pelvis.
CONCLUSIONS: It is a cystic renal tumor with well-defined histologic and immunohistochemical criteria, and it probably does not involve any danger for the patient's live.

The pelvic plexus with its sympathetic (hypogastric nerves, sacral sympathetic trunk) and parasympathetic (pelvic splanchnic nerves) sources provides and distributes the autonomic nervous supply for the pelvic organs. This homogeneous autonomic nerve plate is located within and deeply to the peritoneal fold (recto-uterine in the female pelvis) lying medially to the internal iliac vessels. Autonomic nerve fibres emerge from the pelvic plexus and travel to the anterolateral aspect of the rectum and the inferolateral and posterolateral aspects of the bladder and female genital tract. In addition,…
