Previous investigations have shown that components of a tone burst-evoked otoacoustic emission (TBOAE) evoked by a 1 kHz tone burst (TB1) can be suppressed by the simultaneous presence of a 2 kHz tone burst (TB2) or a pair of tone bursts at 2 and 3 kHz (TB2 and TB3 respectively). No previous study has measured this "simultaneous suppression of TBOAEs" for both TB2 alone and TB2 and TB3 from the same ears, so that the effect of the additional presence of TB3 on suppression caused by TB2 is not known. In simple terms, three outcomes are possible; suppression increases, suppression is reduced or

BACKGROUND: Neurocircuitry models of anxiety disorders suggest dysregulated mechanisms encompassing both automatic and elaborate threat processing. However, the extent to which these processes might be differentially modified by psychotherapy and the neural basis of such changes are unknown. We examined the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in patients with anxiety disorder on brain responses to subliminal and supraliminal threat.
METHODS: 3-Tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess neural responses to disorder-related stimuli, presented during two backward-ma

Previous studies have demonstrated amygdala activation in response to fearful faces even if presented below the threshold of conscious visual perception. It has also been proposed that subcortical regions are selectively sensitive to low spatial frequency (LSF) information. However, chronic hyperarousal may reduce amygdala activation in panic disorder (PD). Our aim was to establish whether the amygdala is engaged by masked and LSF fearful faces in PD as compared to healthy subjects. Neutral faces were used as the mask stimulus. Thirteen PD patients (seven females, six males; mean age=29.1 (S.D

OBJECTIVES: In this study, procedures for measuring sound localization, sound lateralization, and binaural masking level differences (BMLDs) in young children were developed. Sensitivity for these tasks was assessed in large groups of children between 4 and 9 yr of age to investigate potential developmental trends.
DESIGN: Sound localization was measured in the sound field, with a broadband bell-ring presented from one of nine loudspeakers positioned in the frontal horizontal field. A group of 33 children between 4 and 6 yr of age and 5 adults took part in this experiment. Sound lateralizatio

Global neuronal workspace theory predicts that damage to long-distance white matter (WM) tracts should impair access to consciousness during the perception of brief stimuli. To address this issue, we studied visual backward masking in 18 patients at the very first clinical stage of multiple sclerosis (MS), a neurological disease characterized by extensive WM damage, and in 18 matched healthy subjects. In our masking paradigm, the visibility of a digit stimulus increases non-linearly as a function of the interval duration between this target and a subsequent mask. In order to characterize quant

This study examined the effect of an on-frequency precursor on growth-of-masking (GOM) functions measured using an off-frequency masker. The signal was a 6-ms, 4-kHz tone. A GOM function was measured using a 40-ms, 2.8-kHz tone (the off-frequency masker). GOM functions were then measured with an on-frequency, fixed level precursor presented before the off-frequency masker. The precursor was 50 or 60 dB SPL, and 160 ms in duration. For the 60-dB SPL precursor, a 40-ms duration was also used. Two-line functions were fit to the GOM data to estimate the basilar membrane input-output function. The

Positron emission tomography (PET) was used to investigate the neural basis of selective processing of linguistic material during concurrent presentation of multiple stimulus streams ("cocktail-party effect"). Fifteen healthy right-handed adult males were to attend to one of three simultaneously presented messages: one presented visually, one to the left ear, and one to the right ear. During the control condition, subjects attended to visually presented consonant letter strings and ignored auditory messages. This paper reports the modality-nonspecific language processing and visual word-form p

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and event-related potentials (ERPs) to visualize the cerebral processing of unseen masked words. Within the areas associated with conscious reading, masked words activated left extrastriate, fusiform and precentral areas. Furthermore, masked words reduced the amount of activation evoked by a subsequent conscious presentation of the same word. In the left fusiform gyrus, this repetition suppression phenomenon was independent of whether the prime and target shared the same case, indicating that case-independent information about letter strings

This experiment assessed the benefits of suppression and the impact of reduced or absent suppression on speech recognition in noise. Psychophysical suppression was measured in forward masking using tonal maskers and suppressors and band limited noise maskers and suppressors. Subjects were 10 younger and 10 older adults with normal hearing, and 10 older adults with cochlear hearing loss. For younger subjects with normal hearing, suppression measured with noise maskers increased with masker level and was larger at 2.0 kHz than at 0.8 kHz. Less suppression was observed for older than younger subj

We hypothesized that autonomic responses conditioned to fear-relevant stimuli, in contrast to responses conditioned to neutral stimuli, can be elicited after only an automatic, non-conscious analysis of the stimulus. Consequently, they may be expected to be insensitive to verbal instructions. Normal subjects were conditioned to either fear-relevant stimuli (snakes or spiders) or neutral stimuli (flowers or mushrooms) in a differential conditioning paradigm with shock as the unconditioned stimulus. In a subsequent extinction series, half of the subjects were shown the conditioned stimuli under

Adults with chronic subjective tinnitus often struggle with speech recognition in challenging listening environments. While most research demonstrates deficits in speech recognition among individuals with tinnitus, studies focusing on older adults remain scarce. Besides speech recognition deficits, tinnitus has been linked to diminished cognitive performance, particularly in executive functions, yet its associations with specific cognitive domains in ageing populations are not fully understood. Our previous study of younger adults found that individuals with tinnitus exhibit deficits in speech

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus, defined as the conscious awareness of a noise without any identifiable corresponding external acoustic source, can be modulated by various factors. Among these factors, tinnitus patients commonly report drastic increases of tinnitus loudness following nap sleep. Previous studies have suggested that this clinical pattern could be attributed to a somatosensory modulation of tinnitus. To our knowledge, no polysomnographic study has been carried out to assess this hypothesis.
METHODS: For this observational prospective study, 37 participants reporting frequent increases of t

The sensorimotor adaptation process is crucial for maintaining oral communication. Recent studies have shown that individuals with non-phonotraumatic vocal hyperfunction (NPVH) experience difficulties in sensorimotor adaptation when speaking in noise (known as the Lombard effect). However, the role of auditory and somatosensory feedback in the dynamics of adaptation to speaking in noise is still unclear. In this study, the use of a simple three-parameter mathematical model, known as SimpleDIVA model, was extended to explore the adaptation dynamics of speaking in noise among a group of particip

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the extent to which school-age children benefit from fundamental frequency (F0) differences between target words and competing two-talker speech, and (2) assess whether this benefit changes with age. It was predicted that while children would be more susceptible to speech-in-speech masking compared to adults, they would benefit from differences in F0 between target and masker speech. A second experiment was conducted to evaluate the relationship between frequency discrimination thresholds and the ability to benefit from target/maske

Research shows that the sight of trees and the sound of moving water improve the soundscape quality of outdoor spaces exposed to road traffic noise. Effects are attributed to non-energetic masking, visual attentional distortion, and congruence between sight and hearing. However, there is no literature on such effects for aircraft noise. Aircraft noise varies from other traffic sources, i.e., in terms temporal variability, duration, and spectral composition, complicating the application of findings without further research. In a virtual reality experiment reported in this article, participants

Although the neural underpinning of bipolar disorder (BD) is still unknown, recent research suggests that the right fronto-parietal cortex is particularly affected in BD patients. If this were true, we would expect atypical functional cerebral asymmetries in allocation of visuospatial attention. To test this hypothesis, euthymic BD patients and age- and gender-matched healthy controls were compared on the visual line-bisection task, a reliable measure of visuospatial attention, associated with right parietal function. Line bisection performance (i.e. absolute and directional bias) was compared

Hearing-impaired (HI) listeners often show poorer performance on psychoacoustic tasks than do normal-hearing (NH) listeners. Although some such deficits may reflect changes in suprathreshold sound processing, others may be due to stimulus audibility and the elevated absolute thresholds associated with hearing loss. Masking noise can be used to raise the thresholds of NH to equal the thresholds in quiet of HI listeners. However, such noise may have other effects, including changing peripheral response characteristics, such as the compressive input-output function of the basilar membrane in the

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral hearing loss causes difficulty hearing in noise (the "cocktail party effect") due to absence of redundancy, head-shadow, and binaural squelch. This study explores the emergence of the head-shadow and binaural squelch effects in children with unilateral congenital aural atresia undergoing surgery to correct their hearing deficit. Adding patients and data from a similar study previously published, we also evaluate covariates such as the age of the patient, surgical outcome, and complexity of the task that might predict the extent of binaural benefit--patients' ability to "u

The lateral masking effect results in lower performance on letter recognition when items are flanked by other stimuli. Using a new paradigm based on discrimination (feature analysis) and categorization (memory access) tasks, we investigated the influence of level of processing (as addressed, respectively, by these two tasks) and stimulus type (Latin letters, Korean letters and geometrical figures) on lateral masking. In addition, performance of dyslexic and non-dyslexic adult readers was compared. The non-dyslexic participants demonstrated a classical lateral masking effect with lower performa
