Pre-eclampsia is a life-threatening disease of pregnancy unique to humans and a leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Women who survive pre-eclampsia have reduced life expectancy, with increased risks of stroke, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, while babies from a pre-eclamptic pregnancy have increased risks of preterm birth, perinatal death and neurodevelopmental disability and cardiovascular and metabolic disease later in life. Pre-eclampsia is a complex multisystem disease, diagnosed by sudden-onset hypertension (>20 weeks of gestation) and at least one other a…

BACKGROUND: Over one million babies are stillborn or die within the first 28 days of life each year due to preventable causes and poor-quality care in resource-constrained countries. Death audit may be a valuable tool for improving quality of care and decreasing mortality. However, challenges in implementing audit and their subsequent action plans have been reported, with few successfully implemented and sustained. This study aimed to identify factors that affect stillbirth and neonatal death audit at the facility level in the southern region of Malawi.
METHODS: Thirty-eight semi-structured i

BACKGROUND: The Jordan Stillbirth and Neonatal Mortality Surveillance (JSANDS) is an electronic surveillance system that automatically transfers the data on births, stillbirths, and neonatal deaths to the concerned authorities in the Ministry of Health. JSANDS was implemented and tested in 5 maternity hospitals during the period spanning May 2019 through December 2020.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness and performance of JSANDS to register births, stillbirths, and neonatal deaths, and determine their causes. Specifically, this study examined the JSANDS attributes of accep

The objective of the study was to estimate the perinatal mortality rate and to determine the antenatal and intrapartum risk factors associated with perinatal mortality in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A hospital-based, case-control study was carried out in a 40-week period in 1987-1988 in Jeddah at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital (MCH). The subjects comprised 323 perinatal deaths and 486 controls. The perinatal mortality rate (PMR) for Jeddah showed a decline from 42.5 in Islamic Calendar Year 1393H (1973) and 49.5 in 1400H (1979-1980) to 31.4 per 1000 live and stillbirths in 1408H (1987-1988).…

The authors made an analysis of perinatal mortality on 680 cases of premature births recorded between 1982 and 1992 in the CHU maternity, Yaoundé (Cameroon). During this period, 13,555 births were recorded. The frequency of premature births stood at 5%. The most important etiological factors responsible for these 680 premature cases were depicted as malaria infection and anemia (22.2%), premature rupture of the membranes (13%), multiple pregnancies (11.9%), preeclampsia (10.2%), antepartnal bleeding (5.7%), and urogenital infections (5.0%). The perinatal mortality rate was 16.7% (114 cases). T

Obstetric complications and newborn illnesses amenable to basic medical interventions underlie most perinatal deaths. Yet, despite good access to maternal and newborn care in many transitional countries, perinatal mortality is often not monitored in these settings. The present study identified risk factors for perinatal death and the level and causes of stillbirths and neonatal deaths in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Baseline and follow-up censuses with prospective monitoring of pregnant women and newborns from September 2001 to August 2002 were conducted in 83 randomly selected clusters of 30…

Abstract Objective: A perinatal audit has the intention of quality of care improvement based on analysis of perinatal death, with our without analysis of maternal morbidity and/or mortality. Additional analysis of cases of intrapartum asphyxia could provide more insight into ways to improve quality of perinatal care. Methods: Analysis of cases of perinatal death and asphyxia in Jan Yperman Hospital, Ieper, Belgium, in 2012. Results: Three perinatal deaths occurred, none were preventable. Nineteen cases of proven metabolic acidosis have been identified. Three cases are considered possibly preve…

INTRODUCTION: Nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) is the most frequent etiology of hydrops fetalis (HF), accounting for around 95% of cases. It associates high perinatal mortality and morbidity rates. The aim of the study was, first, to investigate etiology, prenatal management, and perinatal outcome in a large single-center series of HF; second, to identify prenatal prognostic factors with impact on perinatal outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational retrospective study of 80 HF diagnosed or referred to a single tertiary center between 2012 and 2021. Clinical characteristics, etiology, pren

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the causes and underlying events in cases of perinatal mortality (PNM) in preterm children.
SETTING: Three regions within the Netherlands.
STUDY DESIGN: For this study, we combined data of a PNM audit over a 1-year (2003-2004) with the corresponding data of its source population (n=22,189). In the perinatal audit, all cases of perinatal death have been assessed by multi disciplinary teams of professionals in perinatal care in a consensus model for cause of death and the presence of substandard care factors (SSF). In this article, we restricted our analysis to children b…

OBJECTIVE: Perinatal mortality deeply affects parents and healthcare providers. Post-autopsy consultations (PACs) help parents understand the causes of fetal death and offer emotional support. This study evaluates their effectiveness in emotional healing, preventing medico-legal disputes, and identifying key death causes.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzes 360 fetal autopsies at San Martino Hospital, Genoa (2013-2021). Among them, 120 parents sought PACs. Causes of fetal death were classified using the relevant condition at death (ReCoDe) system, and parental emotional outcomes were e

Background Rupture uterus is associated with significant maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. Etiologies of uterine rupture are changing with time. There has been shift in etiology from an obstructed labour and multiparity towards rupture of a caesarean section scar. There is paucity of studies regarding this changing paradigm. Objective To study the changing etiological pattern of rupture uterus. Method We retrospectively analysed details of all patients with ruptured gravid uterus from Medical records of Nobel Medical College from 2013 July 1 to 2015 June 30. Sociodemographic pred

BACKGROUND: Each year, about 5.3 million babies die in the perinatal period. Understanding of causes of death is critical for prevention, yet there is no globally acceptable classification system. Instead, many disparate systems have been developed and used. We aimed to identify all systems used or created between 2009 and 2014, with their key features, including extent of alignment with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and variation in features by region, to inform the World Health Organization's development of a new global approach to classifying perinatal deaths.

IMPORTANCE: The US has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed countries. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention deems nearly all of these deaths preventable, especially those attributable to mental health conditions. Coordination between US health care and social service systems could help further characterize circumstances and risks associated with perinatal suicide mortality.
OBJECTIVE: To examine contextual and individual precipitating circumstances and risks associated with perinatal suicide.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional observational study
