[Periodontal microbiota and microorganisms isolated from heart valves in patients undergoing valve replacement surgery in a clinic in Cali, Colombia].

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is an infectious disease that affects the support tissue of the teeth and it is associated with different systemic diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Microbiological studies facilitate the detection of microorganisms from subgingival and cardiovascular samples. OBJECTIVE: To describe the cultivable periodontal microbiota and the presence of microorganisms in heart valves from patients undergoing valve replacement surgery in a clinic in Cali. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 30 subgingival and valvular tissue samples by means of two-phase culture medium,

Smoking, diabetes mellitus, periodontitis, and supportive periodontal treatment as factors associated with dental implant survival: a long-term retrospective evaluation of patients followed for up to 10 years.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the factors associated with long-term implant survival in a large cohort of patients in regular follow-up until data collection. METHODS: The study population consisted of 475 patients who were referred to a private clinic limited to Periodontics and Implantology between November 1995 and July 2006. Data were collected from patient files with regards to smoking habits, periodontal condition, diabetes mellitus, implant survival, and time when implant failure occurred. Patients were divided into those who participated in a supportive periodontal program in the clinic and

Bone augmentation versus 5-mm dental implants in posterior atrophic jaws. Four-month post-loading results from a randomised controlled clinical trial.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether short (5 mm) dental implants could be a suitable alternative to augmentation and placement of longer implants (10 mm) in posterior atrophic jaws. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty partially edentulous patients with bilateral posterior edentulism were included: 15 patients having 5 to 7 mm of residual crestal height above the mandibular canal, and 15 patients having 4 to 6 mm of residual crestal height below the maxillary sinus and bone thickness of at least 8 mm measured on a CT scan. The patients were randomised either to receive one to three submerged 5-mm-long Resc

Multidisciplinary approach to the rehabilitation of a crown fracture with glass-fibre-reinforced composite: a case report.

Traumatic tooth injuries are common in children. When permanent teeth are involved, it can be a challenge to save these teeth. This clinical case study describes the multidisciplinary treatment of a complex crown fracture and luxation of a right maxillary incisor along with esthetic management. After periodontal surgery including guided bone regeneration and endodontic treatment, we used a glass-fibre-reinforced composite post to increase retention and distribute stress along the root. The restoration was completed using composite in an incremental technique. During follow-up appointments, cli

The oral cavity as a reservoir of bacterial pathogens for focal infections.

Dental procedures, but more importantly, oral infections and poor oral health can provoke the introduction of oral microorganisms into the bloodstream or the lymphatic system. The subsequent attachment and multiplication of these bacteria on tissues or organs can lead to focal oral infections. Pathogenic agents may also remain at their primary oral site but the toxins liberated can reach an organ or tissue via the bloodstream and cause metastatic injury. Finally, metastatic inflammation may result from an immunological injury caused by oral bacteria or their soluble products that enter the blo

An update on implant placement and provisionalization in extraction, edentulous, and sinus-grafted sites. A clinical report on 3200 sites over 8 years.

Provisionalization of dental implants at placement has become more prominent in the field of implantology over the past several years, especially in the esthetic zone. The benefits of this treatment option include immediate tooth replacement, formation and maintenance of esthetic soft-tissue contours, containment for bone-grafting and tissue-regenerative procedures, and an improved sense of the patient's perception of the implant process. The blending together of the surgical and prosthetic/esthetic phase has never been more important as implant systems, abutment options, and surgical techniqu

Effect of occlusal wear on bone loss and Periotest value of dental implants.

PURPOSE: Occlusal overload may contribute to the loss of osseointegration of oral implants, so some clinicians are reluctant to place implants in patients with signs of bruxism. This study evaluated the effect of occlusal wear as a probable sign of bruxism on bone loss and implant stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study investigated 379 patients who had worn implant-retained or implant-supported restorations for many years. Occlusal wear, patient age and gender, time of prosthetic loading, jaw, location in the dental arch, implant diameter, prosthesis construction, occlusal material, peri

Protocol for immediate implant replacement of infected teeth.

Extraction and immediate implant placement has become routine procedure due to reduced treatment time and the preservation of anatomical structures. However, in many cases, this technique involves teeth with different degrees of tissue compromise due to underlying infections. Until now, the degree of implant compromise has not been described, nor has a clinical management protocol been established for these cases. The aim of this article is to report the clinical results of a protocol used for immediate implant placement and provisionalization in infected extraction sockets. A classification o

Long-term results of implants treated with guided bone regeneration: a 5-year prospective study.

The aim of this prospective 5-year longitudinal study was to follow endosteal implants in which guided bone regeneration (GBR) was applied during implant placement. In 75 patients, defects around implants (Branemark System) were treated with Bio-Oss and Bio-Gide (112 implants). In split-mouth patients in this group, Bio-Oss and Gore-Tex were used in the second defect site (41 implants). All 75 patients had at least 1 implant that was entirely surrounded by bone and served as the control (112 implants). After placement of the definitive prostheses (single-tooth, fixed, or removable implant pros

The influence of abutment surface roughness on plaque accumulation and peri-implant mucositis.

Bacterial adhesion to intra-oral, hard surfaces is firmly influenced by the surface roughness to these structures. Previous studies showed a remarkable higher subgingival bacterial load on rough surfaces when compared to smooth sites. More recently, the additional effect of a further smoothening of intra-oral hard surfaces on clinical and microbiological parameters was examined in a short-term experiment. The results indicated that a reduction in surface roughness below R(a) = 0.2 microns, the so-called "thresholds R(a)", had no further effect on the quantitative/qualitative microbiological ad
