A method to determine the susceptibility of Mesocylops sp. to insecticides was devised. Matured adults were used for the bioassays. Mesocyclops sp. (25 in number) were placed in 24.9 ml of sterilized paddy field water in 5 cm diameter petri dish and 0.1 ml of appropriate stock solution of the insecticide was added. Mortality was scored 24 h after treatment. Among the insecticides tested, Permethrin, Dichlorvos, Temephos, DDT, Carbendazim, Fenitrothion, Zolone and Aldrin were effective against Mesocyclops sp.

We present the case of a bone marrow transplant patient who was diagnosed with crusted scabies but did not respond to the usual approach with topical permethrin and ivermectin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were contacted and suggested a 7-dose regimen of ivermectin. The patient started to improve remarkably after the third dose, and the skin eruption was resolved after 7 doses. This case supports the use of a more prolonged course of oral ivermectin for crusted scabies in those who fail the conventional approach.

This article provides a brief overview of some diseases transmitted by ticks. These vectors do not transmit only Lyme disease and tickborne-encephalitis, even in Switzerland. Several tick-borne diseases cause nonspecific flu-like symptoms. Nevertheless sometimes severe, some of these diseases can be treated with specific treatments. Repellents, appropriate clothes impregnated with permethrine and prompt removal of the tick are effective preventive measures to limit the risk of infection. There is an effective vaccine which protects against tick-borne encephalitis.

The treatment of scabies has developed with the evolution of new strategies and anti-ectoparasitic drugs. Drugs such as permethrin and ivermectin have revolutionised its treatment. The management of scabies not only includes prescribing the correct drugs but also educating patients about their application. Treatment failure can result from a variety of causes and must be managed appropriately.
