Vincristine-induced vocal cord palsy: case report and review of the literature.

Vincristine-induced vocal cord paralysis is a rare but serious complication. We report 2 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed progressive stridor during induction chemotherapy. There were no clinical features of peripheral or autonomic neuropathy. Flexible laryngoscopy confirmed the diagnosis of bilateral vocal cord palsy; interestingly, the nerve conduction test revealed axonal motor neuropathy involving the median and common peroneal nerves in both patients. The first patient required prolonged ventilatory support necessitating unilateral cordectomy before extubation, whe

Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy type II with neurofilament accumulation: new finding or new disorder?

Peroneal muscular atrophy is now known to be heterogeneous and to be due to various underlying genetic mechanisms. Exploring this heterogeneity further, we report on a German kinship with the clinical, genetic, and nerve conduction features of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type II (HMSN type II) but whose sural nerves on biopsy were found to show infrequent axonal swellings with neurofilament accumulations not previously described. The dominant inheritance and absence of kinky hair set this disorder apart from giant axonal neuropathy. There was no history of toxic exposure to industr

Peroneal Nerve Dysfunction Following Vascularized Fibular Epiphyseal Transfer (VFET): A Prospective Case Series Study.

BACKGROUND: In skeletally immature individuals, vascularized epiphyseal transfer allows for reconstruction of complex bony defects while preserving longitudinal growth and providing a reliable articular surface for effective joint function. The shape and size of the proximal fibular epiphysis allow for gradual remodeling of the articular surface, facilitating favorable reconstruction and rehabilitation over time. Moreover, the proximal fibula is highly expandable, with less weight-bearing function, contributing to low donor-site morbidity. However, peroneal nerve dysfunction-related foot drop

Intra-articular peroneal nerve incarceration following multi-ligament knee injury.

Knee dislocation with a common peroneal nerve injury is a serious problem. A case of multi-ligamentous knee injury with the unusual and interesting finding of a common peroneal nerve rupture incarcerated within the knee joint is presented. MRI and arthroscopic images are used to document this occurrence. To date, there are no published reports of a similar finding in the English orthopaedic literature. Level of evidence IV.

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the peroneal nerve: case report and literature review.

Inflammatory pseudotumors (IPTs) are a group of lesions of obscure etiology. Although they are presumably reactive, their exact pathogenesis is unknown. Inflammatory pseudotumors are identified in different organs; however, IPTs of the peripheral nerves have been rarely reported in the English literature. We report a 44-year-old woman who presented with left foot drop. Examination revealed a thickening in the posterolateral aspect of the popliteal fossa and features consistent with peroneal nerve palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass that may represent a Baker cyst or perineural sh

Comparable myelinated nerve pathology in feline and human diabetes mellitus.

The occurrence of diabetic neuropathy in cats provides an opportunity to study the development and treatment of neurological complications not present in diabetic rodent models, where few pathological alterations are evident. The present study further defines pathological alterations in nerve biopsies from 12 cats with spontaneously occurring diabetes mellitus. Peroneal nerve biopsies displayed concurrent injury to both Schwann cells and axons of myelinated fibers that was remarkably similar to that present in human diabetic neuropathy. In addition to demyelination, remyelination (constituting

Tendon Transfers and Their Role in Cavus Foot Deformity.

Management of the cavus foot is a difficult task for the foot and ankle surgeon. Tendon transfers have been a longstanding accepted treatment for the flexible cavus foot. Performing tendon transfers requires an in-depth understanding of the patient's medical history, factors leading to the development of deformity, as well as the deforming forces contributing to the deformity. Evaluation of the patient for rigid, progressive, and/or spastic deformities is critical to avoid postoperative complications. Educating the patient on postoperative rehabilitation, potential complications, and postopera

Advances in neuroprosthetic management of foot drop: a review.

This paper reviews the technological advances and clinical results obtained in the neuroprosthetic management of foot drop. Functional electrical stimulation has been widely applied owing to its corrective abilities in patients suffering from a stroke, multiple sclerosis, or spinal cord injury among other pathologies. This review aims at identifying the progress made in this area over the last two decades, addressing two main questions: What is the status of neuroprosthetic technology in terms of architecture, sensorization, and control algorithms?. What is the current evidence on its function

Immediate effect of a wearable foot drop stimulator to prevent foot drop on the gait ability of patients with hemiplegia after stroke.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a foot drop stimulator (FDS) and ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) on the gait ability of patients with hemiplegia after stroke. This study recruited 10 patients with hemiplegia after stroke. All patients performed gait under two conditions (AFO and FDS gait). Gait parameters were measured with the GAITRite® system to analyze the spatial and temporal parameters of the patients' gaits. No significant differences in cadence, velocity, swing time, stance time, or step length of the affected or less-affected limbs were found between the two condition

Pseudoaneurysm of the popliteal artery complicated by peroneal mononeuropathy in a 4-year-old child: report of a case.

Pseudoaneurysms of the popliteal artery (PPA) rarely occur in children. In fact, we found only 10 cases reported in the medical literature. We report the case of a 4-year-old boy who presented with a painful palpable mass in the right popliteal fossa. He also had mild, painless right foot-drop and difficulty toe-walking on the same side. The diagnosis of a PPA was based on the findings of triplex ultrasound and computed tomographic-angiography. We attributed the cause of the lesion to blunt trauma, which he had suffered 2 years earlier. Thorough preoperative evaluation excluded the possibility
