Patients' preferences for selective versus complete excavation: A mixed-methods study.

OBJECTIVES: Despite increasing evidence supporting selective caries tissue removal, the technique is not adopted by most dentists, one possible reason being that patients might reject it. We aimed to assess patients' preferences for selective versus complete excavation, and to identify predictors of this preference. METHODS: A sequential mixed-methods approach was taken. First, semi-structured focus group discussions on two convenience samples were performed. Verbatim transcripts were evaluated using content-analysis to inform quantitative study design. The subsequent survey employed convenie

Bat rabies in the United States and Canada from 1950 through 2007: human cases with and without bat contact.

BACKGROUND: Since the 1980s, rare cases of rabies in humans in Canada and the United States have been almost exclusively caused by the bat-variant virus. METHODS: We reviewed indigenously acquired cases of bat-variant rabies in humans in Canada and the United States from 1950 through 2007. RESULTS: Of 61 cases identified, 5 occurred after organ transplantation and were excluded from further analysis. A bite was reported by 22 (39%) of the case patients, 9 (16%) had a direct contact (i.e., were touched by a bat) but no history of a bite, 6 (11%) found bats in their home (2 [4%] in the room wh

IWGDF/IDSA guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes-related foot infections (IWGDF/IDSA 2023).

The International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) has published evidence-based guidelines on the management and prevention of diabetes-related foot diseases since 1999. The present guideline is an update of the 2019 IWGDF guideline on the diagnosis and management of foot infections in persons with diabetes mellitus. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) framework was used for the development of this guideline. This was structured around identifying clinically relevant questions in the P(A)ICO format, determining patient-important outcomes, s

Sources and preferences for nutrition information among older adults: A scoping review.

A nutritionally adequate diet is essential for older adults to support healthy ageing and reduce the risk of malnutrition. With over a million older adults in the UK affected or at risk, understanding where they source nutrition information is critical for designing effective public health interventions. This scoping review mapped existing studies on the sources and preferences for nutrition information among older adults. A comprehensive search of PUBMED, Scopus, and CINAHL (March 2023; updated February 2025) yielded 8936 records, of which 15 studies reporting on 14 research projects met incl

Knowledge of HIV infection and the fear of mixing socially with HIV-infected and AIDS-sick patients among STD patients in Bergen, Norway.

This is a study of data from 599 STD (sexually transmitted disease) clinic patients in Bergen, Norway who visited the clinic in April-June 1989. We studied the patients' knowledge of modes of HIV transmission and their degree of ignorance of how HIV is not transmitted. Particular interest was focused on how misconceptions influenced the respondents' perception of HIV/AIDS sick persons and the importance of confidence in AIDS information from the health authorities. The objective of the study was to compare the data from this investigation of STD patients with data from similar studies in the g

Acceptability of a personally controlled health record in a community-based setting: implications for policy and design.

BACKGROUND: Consumer-centered health information systems that address problems related to fragmented health records and disengaged and disempowered patients are needed, as are information systems that support public health monitoring and research. Personally controlled health records (PCHRs) represent one response to these needs. PCHRs are a special class of personal health records (PHRs) distinguished by the extent to which users control record access and contents. Recently launched PCHR platforms include Google Health, Microsoft's HealthVault, and the Dossia platform, based on Indivo. OBJEC

Awareness of Narrative Identity Questionnaire (ANIQ) in Early Adolescents: Psychometric Evaluation and Association with Features of Personality Disorder.

Identity formation is central to adolescent development. Challenges in establishing a stable sense of self is associated with maladaptive identity function, which has been recognized as a core feature of personality pathology. The narrative identity framework offers a unique lens to garner salient information about one's sense of self. The Awareness of Narrative Identity Questionnaire (ANIQ) is a self-report measure of narrative identity validated in adults but is yet to be validated in adolescents. The current study aimed to conduct the first psychometric evaluation of the ANIQ in a sample of

The family caregiver experience in palliative care pathways: a multidimensional framework.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers play an essential role across the life course of people, especially in delicate moments as the end-of-life, playing a central role in supporting and caring for terminal patients. Exploring the experience of family caregivers along this pathway is crucial to ensure a respectful, person-centered and high-quality experience with healthcare services, not only for patients but also for their caregivers. This study aimed to develop and validate collaboratively a multidimensional framework to explore the global experience of family caregivers across the palliative care p

Mutational analysis of 206 families with cavernous malformations.

OBJECT: A gene contributing to the autosomal-dominant cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) phenotype, KRIT1 (an acronym for Krev Interaction Trapped 1), has been identified through linkage analysis and mutation screening. The authors collected blood samples from 68 patients with familial CCM and 138 patients with apparently sporadic CCM as well as from their families, in an effort to characterize the prevalence and spectrum of disease-causing sequence variants in the KRIT1 gene. METHODS: The authors used single-strand conformational polymorphism analysis to identify genomic variants in KRIT1

Long QT syndrome and other repolarization-related dysrhythmias.

Until recently, sudden cardiac death in a young person often remained an unexplained tragedy. However, in the last decade there have been dramatic advances in medical knowledge regarding inheritable dysrhythmias that increase the risk of SCD in otherwise healthy young individuals. The primary mechanism in this group of dysrhythmias appears to be an alteration of cardiac repolarization. In some diseases, the specific genes affected and even precise cellular mechanisms have been identified. The information about these diseases is often complex and rapidly evolving, challenging both healthcare pr

Family Members Experiences of Being Identified as a Family Caregiver to a Person Living With Dementia.

Globally, family members account for the main source of caregiving for people with dementia in ordinary housing. Providing informal care may have negative health consequences for relatives such as stress, reduced quality of life and depression. According to Swedish legislation, the social services should provide support to those who care for a relative who is elderly, has a long-term illness or a disability. However, it is not clear how family caregivers can be identified to be provided support. Identifying family caregivers is a challenge for social services and the healthcare system, especia

Ethnicity and Pathway Progression: A Retrospective Cohort Study of Male Offenders Managed Under London Offender Personality Disorder Pathway Services.

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom, the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) Pathway provides a psychologically informed pathway of services-from screening to formulation to referral to treatments/interventions-for men and women whose offending is linked to their complex mental health needs. Evidence shows that individuals from most ethnic minority groups in the United Kingdom are over-represented at all stages of the criminal justice system (including arrests, cautions and convictions). Such individuals may, however, be disadvantaged in terms of their access to and engagement with this speciali

Improving identification of lynch syndrome patients: a comparison of research data with clinical records.

Current evidence suggests poor identification and referral of Lynch syndrome patients. This study evaluated the strategies by which patients with endometrial cancer were referred to genetics services. Data from clinic-based patients with endometrial cancer enrolled through the Australian National Endometrial Cancer population-based research study with detailed family history information were analyzed. The Amsterdam II criteria, the revised Bethesda guidelines, and criteria adapted for this study was assessed using personal/family history information. The percentages of patients referred and wh

Evidence for the effectiveness of rehabilitation-in-the-community programmes.

The present literature review identified 29 reports from 22 countries in Asia, Africa and Central America reporting on the outcomes of rehabilitation-in-the-community programmes in low and middle income countries published between 1987 and 2007. Interventions included home visits by trained community workers who taught disabled persons skills to carry out activities of daily living, encouraged disabled children to go to school, helped find employment or an income generating activity, often involving vocational training and/or micro-credit. Many programmes had a component of influencing communi

A sexual intimacy survey of former nuns and priests.

Men and women who have lived in a celibate religious community experience a unique set of sexual, social, and psychological problems upon resuming a secular life style. In many instances the personality factors and circumstances which led both to a decision to enter and then to leave a celibate religious community are not easily appreciated by the nonreligious professional counselor and do not readily lend themselves to extrapolation from other population groups. This article reports the findings of a preliminary study to identify the sexual experiences and problems of persons who have left re
