Sandfly fever viruses in Italy.

Two serologically distinct agents, the sandfly fever Sicilian and the sandfly fever Naples viruses, were isolated by Sabin from blood samples taken during an Italian epidemic of febrile illness. Since then, several different viruses have been isolated from sandflies and/or humans in both the Old and New World. Toscana virus, a new virus closely antigenically related to sandfly fever Naples virus, was isolated in 1971 from the sandfly Phlebotomus perniciosus in Italy. Extensive studies on the importance of Toscana virus as a human pathogen demonstrated its association with acute neurologic dise…

Cocirculation of 2 genotypes of Toscana virus, southeastern France.

Toscana virus (TOSV), an arthropodborne phlebovirus transmitted by sandflies, can cause febrile illness and meningitis. The vector of TOSV in France was unknown. We detected TOSV RNA in 2 (female Phlebotomus perniciosus) of 61 pools of sandflies captured in southeastern France. Two genotypes of TOSV were identified.

Leishmania infantum in Tigers and Sand Flies from a Leishmaniasis-Endemic Area, Southern Italy.

We detected Leishmania infantum infection in 45% of tigers and 5.3% of sand flies tested at a zoo in southern Italy in 2019. These infections in tigers and the abundance of Phlebotomus perniciosus sand flies represent a potential risk to other animals and humans living in or visiting the zoo.

Phlebotomine sand fly survey, blood meal source identification, and description of Sergentomyia imihra n. sp. in the central Sahara of Algeria.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are important vectors of various pathogens, mainly Leishmania parasites. In the Old World, the most important genus in term of pathogens transmission is the genus Phlebotomus, which includes many proven or suspected vectors of several Leishmania species, while the genus Sergentomyia remains so far unproven as a vector of human pathogens. Algeria is one of the most affected countries by human leishmaniasis. METHODS: In the present study, an entomological survey was carried out in two provinces, Ghardaïa and Illizi, located in the north…

Structure of natural foci of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis and its relationship to regional morphology.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis is still a public health problem in Central Asia. To control the outbreaks, different control measures are required in different regions and comprehensive information is required about natural foci. The term landsaft, used by Soviet geographers to denote particular geographical regions, is defined and this concept is used in examining the natural focality of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in the south of the Turkmen SSR.The main reservoir species in this area was Rhombomys opimus, and the disease was transmitted mainly by Sergentomyia arpaklensis, Phlebotomus …

Seasonal fluctuations of phlebotomine sand fly populations (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the urban area of Marrakech, Morocco.

Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were collected continuously, using sticky traps, during 1 year from October 2002 to September 2003, in an urban area of Marrakech city (Morocco). A total of 3277 specimens were collected belonging to five species. Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus) papatasi (54.6%) is the predominant species followed by Sergentomyia (Sergentomyia) minuta (20%), S. (S.) fallax (11.3%), P. (Paraphlebotomus) sergenti (10.3%) and P. (Larroussius) longicuspis (3.8%). Data analyses showed a mono-modal annual pattern for P. sergenti and a bi-modal one for the other species. P. pa…

Species-specific antigens in salivary glands of phlebotomine sandflies.

Saliva inoculated by sandfly females during feeding stimulated production of high levels of anti-saliva antibodies. To determine whether 3 species of the genus Phlebotomus have species-specific salivary antigens we performed dot-blots and immunoblots using sera from mice, hamsters and rabbits repeatedly bitten by sandflies. Important differences were found in the antigen components of the salivary gland lysates (SGL) of Phlebotomus papatasi, P. perniciosus and P. halepensis. In total 4-9 species-specific antigens were detected in each species by immunoblotting. Cross-reactivity was not detecte…

BACKGROUND: Incidence of human leishmaniasis in Castellón is among the highest in Spain. In order to know epidemiologic situation of leishmaniasis, human incidence, Phlebotomus' presence and canine reservoir were studied. METHODS: The study was carried out during 1989-1990, and included review of different registers of cases and glucantime use, Phlebotomus catching, and leishmaniasis serology (immunofluorescent test, IFT) of dogs from municipal kennel and rabies vaccine programme. RESULTS: Hospitals' underreporting visceral leishmaniasis was noted. Glucantime's distribution permitted identif…

Meningoencephalitis due to Toscana virus in a French traveler returning from central Italy.

Toscana virus (TOSV) is an arthropod-borne virus transmitted by sand flies of Phlebotomus species that has been recognized as an agent associated with acute meningitis and encephalitis around the Mediterranean. We report the first imported case of meningoencephalitis due to TOSV in a traveler returning from Central Italy to France.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Libyan Arab Republic: preliminary ecological findings.

Preliminary results show cutaneous leishmaniasis in Libya to be, sometimes at least, a rural zoonotic infection. The parasites are transmitted, probably by Phlebotomus papatasi, between the rodents Psammomys obesus and Meriones libycus. The banks and 'islands' in the main channel of seasonal wadis provide the right combination of vegetation and permanence for the maintenance of an intense focus.

Distribution of Phlebotomine Sand Flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the Lombardy Region, Northern Italy.

This study investigated the species composition and density of sand flies in the Lombardy region (Northern Italy). Sand flies were collected using CDC traps baited with CO2 (CO2-CDC traps) between June and August 2021. A total of 670 sand flies were collected.
