Laryngeal Diadochokinesis in the Mandarin Population.

INTRODUCTION: This study identifies the most suitable syllable for laryngeal diadochokinesis (LDDK) in Mandarin speakers. METHODS: One hundred and ten Mandarin speakers aged 18-83 years were used in the study. LDDK was assessed using quick repetitions of /ʔe/, /ʔi/, /ʔa/, /he/, /ha/, and /hi/. The observation index included the average rate (syllable/s) and regularity (%). RESULTS: In the various age groups, there was no significant difference in LDDK rate and regularity of adducted syllables (p > 0.05), and only the regularity of /ʔi/ is significantly different between aged 18-40 and 41-

Objective Automatic Assessment of Rehabilitative Speech Treatment in Parkinson's Disease.

Vocal performance degradation is a common symptom for the vast majority of Parkinson's disease (PD) subjects, who typically follow personalized one-to-one periodic rehabilitation meetings with speech experts over a long-term period. Recently, a novel computer program called Lee Silverman voice treatment (LSVT) Companion was developed to allow PD subjects to independently progress through a rehabilitative treatment session. This study is part of the assessment of the LSVT Companion, aiming to investigate the potential of using sustained vowel phonations towards objectively and automatically rep…

Preferential use of full glottal stops in vowel-initial glottalization in child speech: Evidence from novel words.

Vowel-initial glottalization constitutes a cue to prosodic prominence, realized on a strength continuum from creaky phonation to complete glottal stops. While there is considerable research on children's early utilization of acoustic cues for stress marking, less is understood about the specific implementation of vowel-initial glottalization in American English. Eight sequences of function + novel words were elicited from groups of 5-to-8-year-olds, 8-to-11-year-olds, and adults. Children exhibit a similar rate of prevocalic glottalization to adults but differ in its phonetic implementation, p…

Antoine Ferrein (1693-1769)-His Life and Contribution to Anatomy and Physiology: The Description of the Vocal Chords and Their Function.

The purpose of this study is to summarize the life and work of the French anatomist and surgeon Antoine Ferrein (1693-1769). Ferrein made an impact in the history of anatomy and physiology through his work and especially with the description of phonation, renal anatomy, and liver and biliary structure. He also made an impact on ophthalmology with the description of the eyelid and its diseases. After a thorough review of the literature, we present in this review his life and his main discoveries with special emphasis on the anatomic description of the vocal chords resembling the chords of a vio…

Pharyngo-laryngeal dysfunction and severe COPD.

OBJECTIVES: The course of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) features episodic exacerbation, contributing to severity. The present study assessed associations between COPD, dysphonia and dysphagia. Laryngeal aspiration is a risk factor for repeated exacerbation of COPD. Certain risk factors are common to COPD and laryngeal pathology; dyspnea impairs phonation and swallowing. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study included 29 patients with group E COPD outside of exacerbation episodes, and free of neurodegenerative disease and history of head and neck cancer. Phonation and swal…

Membranous and cartilaginous vocal fold adduction in singing.

While vocal fold adduction is an important parameter in speech, relatively little has been known on the adjustment of the vocal fold adduction in singing. This study investigates the possibility of separate adjustments of cartilaginous and membranous vocal fold adduction in singing. Six female and seven male subjects, singers and non-singers, were asked to imitate an instructor in producing four phonation types: "aBducted falsetto" (FaB), "aDducted falsetto" (FaD), "aBducted Chest" (CaB), and "aDducted Chest" (CaD). The phonations were evaluated using videostroboscopy, videokymography (VKG), e…

Experimental analysis of the characteristics of artificial vocal folds.

Specialized literature presents a number of models describing the function of the vocal folds. In most of those models, an emphasis is placed on the air flowing through the glottis and, further, on the effect of the parameters of the air alone (its mass, speed, and so forth). The article focuses on the constructional definition of artificial vocal folds and their experimental analysis. The analysis is conducted for voiced source voice phonation and for the changing mean value of the subglottal pressure. The article further deals with the analysis of the pressure of the airflow through the voca…

Objective acoustic quantification of phonatory dysfunction in Huntington's disease.

PURPOSE: Although speech motor changes are reported as a common sign of Huntington's disease (HD), the most prominent signs of voice dysfunction remain unknown. The aim of the current study was to explore specific changes in phonatory function in subjects with HD. METHOD: 34 subjects with HD and 34 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were examined. Participants performed sustained vowel phonation for subsequent analyses of airflow insufficiency, aperiodicity, irregular vibrations of vocal folds, signal perturbations, increased noise, and articulation deficiency. In total, 272 phonations wer…

Perception of Vocal Tremor After Deep Brain Stimulation in Varying Speech Contexts.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vocal tremor (VT) is a difficult to treat voice problem characterized by periodic modulations of fundamental frequency and vocal intensity. VT is easier to perceive during sustained phonation as compared to connected speech. Previous studies have demonstrated improvements in perception of VT during sustained phonation after undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treatment of essential tremor. However, few studies have investigated perception of VT in connected speech contexts. The purpose of this preliminary study was to examine differences in perception of VT sever…

Arytenoid cartilage movements are hypokinetic in Parkinson's disease: A quantitative dynamic computerised tomographic study.

BACKGROUND: Voice change is one of the earliest features of Parkinson's disease. However, quantitative studies of vocal fold dynamics which are needed to provide insight into disease biology, aid diagnosis, or track progression, are few. METHODS: We therefore quantified arytenoid cartilage movements and glottic area during repeated phonation in 15 patients with Parkinson's disease (symptom duration < 6 years) and 19 controls, with 320-slice computerised tomography (CT). We related these measures to perceptual voice evaluations and spirometry. We hypothesised that Parkinson's disease patients …
