Advanced computational model of rod ERG kinetics.

PURPOSE: The electroretinogram (ERG) is the summed response from all levels of the retinal processing of light, and exhibits several profound nonlinearities in the underlying processing pathways. Accurate computational models of the ERG are important, both for understanding the multifold processes of light transduction to ecologically useful signals by the retina, and for their diagnostic capabilities for the identification and characterization of retinal disease mechanisms. There are, however, very few computational models of the ERG waveform, and none that account for the full extent of its

Hierarchical computation of 3D motion across macaque areas MT and FST.

Computing behaviorally relevant representations of three-dimensional (3D) motion from two-dimensional (2D) retinal signals is critical for survival. To ascertain where and how the primate visual system performs this computation, we recorded from the macaque middle temporal (MT) area and its downstream target, the fundus of the superior temporal sulcus (area FST). Area MT is a key site of 2D motion processing, but its role in 3D motion processing is controversial. The functions of FST remain highly underexplored. To distinguish representations of 3D motion from those of 2D retinal motion, we co

Posterior Parietal Cortex Plays a Causal Role in Abstract Memory-Based Visual Categorical Decisions.

Neural activity in the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP) correlates with both sensory evaluation and motor planning underlying visuomotor decisions. We previously showed that LIP plays a causal role in visually-based perceptual and categorical decisions, and preferentially contributes to evaluating sensory stimuli over motor planning. In that study, however, monkeys reported their decisions with a saccade to a colored target associated with the correct motion category or direction. Since LIP is known to play a role in saccade planning, it remains unclear whether LIP's causal role in such deci

Impact of region of interest definition on visual stimulation-based cerebral vascular reactivity functional MRI with a special focus on applications in cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Cerebral vascular reactivity quantified using blood oxygen level-dependent functional MRI in conjuncture with a visual stimulus has been proven to be a potent and early marker for cerebral amyloid angiopathy. This work investigates the influence of different postprocessing methods on the outcome of such vascular reactivity measurements. Three methods for defining the region of interest (ROI) over which the reactivity is measured are investigated: structural (transformed V1), functional (template based on the activation of a subset of subjects), and percentile (11.5 cm3 most responding voxels).

Progressive neuronal plasticity in primate visual cortex during stimulus familiarization.

The primate brain is equipped to learn and remember newly encountered visual stimuli such as faces and objects. In the macaque inferior temporal (IT) cortex, neurons mark the familiarity of a visual stimulus through response modification, often involving a decrease in spiking rate. Here, we investigate the emergence of this neural plasticity by longitudinally tracking IT neurons during several weeks of familiarization with face images. We found that most neurons in the anterior medial (AM) face patch exhibited a gradual decline in their late-phase visual responses to multiple stimuli. Individu

The photic blink reflex as an index of photophobia.

Two recent studies of eye closure triggered by intense luminance increase suggest that this behavior reflects the melanopsin-based retinal activity known to underlie photophobia, the pathological aversion to light (Kardon, 2012; Kaiser et al., 2021). Early studies of the photic blink reflex (PBR) are reviewed to help guide future research on this possible objective index of photophobia. Electromyographic recordings of the lid-closure muscle, orbicularis oculi, reveal distinct bursts with typical onset latencies of 50 and 80 ms, R50 and R80, respectively. The latter component appears to be espe

Disturbances in primary visual processing as a function of healthy aging.

For decades, visual entrainment paradigms have been widely used to investigate basic visual processing in healthy individuals and those with neurological disorders. While healthy aging is known to be associated with alterations in visual processing, whether this extends to visual entrainment responses and the precise cortical regions involved is not fully understood. Such knowledge is imperative given the recent surge in interest surrounding the use of flicker stimulation and entrainment in the context of identifying and treating Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the current study, we examined visu

Effects of left and right medial temporal lobe resections on hemodynamic correlates of negative and neutral scene processing.

Enhanced visual cortex activation by negative compared to neutral stimuli is often attributed to modulating feedback from the amygdala, but evidence from lesion studies is scarce, particularly regarding differential effects of left and right amygdala lesions. Therefore, we compared visual cortex activation by negative and neutral complex scenes in an event-related fMRI study between 40 patients with unilateral temporal lobe resection (TLR; 19 left [lTLR], 21 right [rTLR]), including the amygdala, and 20 healthy controls. We found preserved hemodynamic emotion modulation of visual cortex in rTL

A neural correlate of perceptual segmentation in macaque middle temporal cortical area.

High-resolution vision requires fine retinal sampling followed by integration to recover object properties. Importantly, accuracy is lost if local samples from different objects are intermixed. Thus, segmentation, grouping of image regions for separate processing, is crucial for perception. Previous work has used bi-stable plaid patterns, which can be perceived as either a single or multiple moving surfaces, to study this process. Here, we report a relationship between activity in a mid-level site in the primate visual pathways and segmentation judgments. Specifically, we find that direction s

A conflict between spatial selection and evidence accumulation in area LIP.

The lateral intraparietal area (LIP) contains spatially selective neurons that help guide eye movements and, according to numerous studies, do so by accumulating sensory evidence in favor of one choice (e.g., look left) or another (look right). To examine this functional link, we trained two monkeys on an urgent motion discrimination task, a task with which the evolution of both the recorded neuronal activity and the subject's choice can be tracked millisecond by millisecond. We found that while choice accuracy increased steeply with increasing sensory evidence, at the same time, the LIP selec

Visual stimulation and frequency of focal neurological symptoms engage distinctive neurocognitive resources in migraine with aura patients: a study of resting-state functional networks.

INTRODUCTION: Several functional neuroimaging studies on healthy controls and patients with migraine with aura have shown that the activation of functional networks during visual stimulation is not restricted to the striate system, but also includes several extrastriate networks. METHODS: Before and after 4 min of visual stimulation with a checkerboard pattern, we collected functional MRI in 21 migraine with aura (MwA) patients and 18 healthy subjects (HS). For each recording session, we identified independent resting-state networks in each group and correlated network connection strength cha

Visually sensitive seizures: An updated review by the Epilepsy Foundation.

Light flashes, patterns, or color changes can provoke seizures in up to 1 in 4000 persons. Prevalence may be higher because of selection bias. The Epilepsy Foundation reviewed light-induced seizures in 2005. Since then, images on social media, virtual reality, three-dimensional (3D) movies, and the Internet have proliferated. Hundreds of studies have explored the mechanisms and presentations of photosensitive seizures, justifying an updated review. This literature summary derives from a nonsystematic literature review via PubMed using the terms "photosensitive" and "epilepsy." The photoparoxys

Low frequency visual stimulation enhances slow wave activity without disrupting the sleep pattern in mice.

Non-invasive stimulation technologies are emerging as potential treatment options for a range of neurodegenerative disorders. Experimental evidence suggests that stimuli-evoked changes in slow brain rhythms may mitigate or even prevent neuropathological and behavioral impairments. Slow wave activity is prevalent during sleep and can be triggered non-invasively by sensory stimulation targeting the visual system or directly via activation of neurons locally using optogenetics. Here, we developed new tools for delivering visual stimulation using light-emitting diodes in freely moving mice while a

Semantic Categorization of Naming Responses Based on Prearticulatory Electrical Brain Activity.

PURPOSE: Object naming requires visual decoding, conceptualization, semantic categorization, and phonological encoding, all within 400 to 600 ms of stimulus presentation and before a word is spoken. In this study, we sought to predict semantic categories of naming responses based on prearticulatory brain activity recorded with scalp EEG in healthy individuals. METHODS: We assessed 19 healthy individuals who completed a naming task while undergoing EEG. The naming task consisted of 120 drawings of animate/inanimate objects or abstract drawings. We applied a one-dimensional, two-layer, neural n

Searching for Visual Singletons Without A Feature to Guide Attention.

RT studies have provided evidence for a singleton-detection strategy that is used to search for salient targets when there is no additional featural knowledge that would help guide attention. Despite this behavioral evidence, there have been few ERP studies of singleton detection mode because it was reported early on that the ERP signature of attentional selection (the N2pc) is absent without feature guidance. Recently, however, it was discovered that a small and relatively late N2pc occurs in singleton detection mode along with a previously unreported component called the singleton detection

Internal noise measures in coarse and fine motion direction discrimination tasks and the correlation with autism traits.

Motion perception is essential for visual guidance of behavior and is known to be limited by both internal additive noise (i.e., a constant level of random fluctuations in neural activity independent of the stimulus) and motion pooling (global integration of local motion signals across space). People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) display abnormalities in motion processing, which have been linked to both elevated noise and abnormal pooling. However, to date, the impact of a third limit-induced internal noise (internal noise that scales up with increases in external stimulus noise)-has not

Age-dependent perturbation of the perceptual and postural vertical by visual roll vection and susceptibility to motion sickness in children.

BACKGROUND: The visual contribution to the perceptual and postural vertical is mediated by a multisensory integration process and may relate to children's susceptibility to motion sickness that is hypothesized to arise from intersensory conflicts. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the maturation of visual contribution to the perceptual and postural vertical in conjunction with the motion sickness susceptibility in childhood. METHODS: In 81 healthy children (aged 2-17 years; 57 females), adjustments of the subjective visual vertical and posturographically tested mediolateral displacements of body sway we

The influence of congenital corneal opacity on ERGs obtained using an abbreviated protocol.

BACKGROUND: Visual electrophysiology may be used to assess visual potential in infants with congenital corneal opacities (CCO). It is essential to recognize confounding effects from these opacities on the flash electroretinogram (ERG). METHODS: ERGs were recorded in awake children employing skin electrodes placed at the lower eyelid crease, both referred to a midfrontal electrode (Fz). A hand-held stimulator was used to present a mixed rod-cone and a dim white stimulus. Recordings were carried out before and after penetrating keratoplasty (PK), when performed. RESULTS: Five infants under the

Comparison of mastery criteria applied to individual targets and stimulus sets on acquisition of tacts, intraverbals, and listener responses.

Mastery criteria can be applied to individual targets or stimuli organized into sets. Wong et al. (2021) and Wong and Fienup (2022) found that participants who received special education services learned sight words more rapidly when an individual target mastery criterion was applied. The current study replicated and extended these findings across novel skills. Five participants with ASD received tact or intraverbal training in Experiment 1, and 2 participants with ASD received auditory-visual conditional discrimination training (AVCD) in Experiment 2. In both experiments, mastery criteria wer

Does automatic human face categorization depend on head orientation?

Whether human categorization of visual stimuli as faces is optimal for full-front views, best revealing diagnostic features but lacking depth cues, remains largely unknown. To address this question, we presented 16 human observers with unsegmented natural images of different living and non-living objects at a fast rate (f = 12 Hz), with natural face images appearing at f/9 = 1.33 Hz. Faces posing all full-front or at ¾ side view angles appeared in separate sequences. Robust frequency-tagged 1.33 Hz (and harmonic) occipito-temporal electroencephalographic (EEG) responses reflecting face-selecti
