Fatty acids (FAs) mediate trophic energy transfer and may reflect biochemical responses to contaminant exposure, yet their linkage with halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs) across adjacent coastal food webs remains unclear. This study comparatively examined the occurrence, biomagnification, and associations between 103 HOCs and 36 FAs in two predator-based food webs from the Pearl River Estuary: a marine fish-dolphin (Sousa chinensis) food web and a mangrove-associated terrestrial insect-spider (Nephila pilipes) food web. The fish-dolphin food web exhibited higher HOC biomagnification (BMFs

Embryo implantation is a major reproductive bottleneck, requiring precise spatiotemporal coordination between the embryo and the maternal endometrium. This intricate communication is governed by synchronised molecular signalling, mechanical cues, and endocrine regulation. Although some of these mechanisms are conserved across mammals, marked species differences in the degree of invasiveness of implantation, decidualisation, and placental morphology, as well as in embryonic developmental milestones, limit comparative understanding of early pregnancy across species. Moreover, ethical restriction

Antarctic sponges host diverse and functionally relevant microbial communities that play central roles in the structure and resilience of polar benthic ecosystems. This review provides a focused analysis of the prokaryotic microbiomes associated with Antarctic sponges, with an emphasis on three ecologically significant species: Mycale (Oxymycale) acerata, Dendrilla antarctica, and Hymeniacidon torquata. Drawing from recent molecular studies, we examine the composition, predicted functional potential, and environmental responsiveness of these bacterial and archaeal communities. Comparative anal

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have transformed the management of type 2 diabetes and obesity, yet their actions extend beyond glycemic control and weight loss. This narrative review synthesizes current preclinical and clinical evidence examining the bidirectional relationship between glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and circadian biology. A structured literature search was conducted in PubMed using combinations of the terms 'GLP-1,' 'circadian,' 'chronobiology,' 'sleep,' 'obesity,' and 'type 2 diabetes' through January 2026. Accumulating evidence indicat

There remains a need for animal models with human translatability in lung cancer (LC) research. Findings in pigs can have a substantial impact owing to their similar anatomy and physiology to humans. Here we present a bronchoscopically induced LC model in Oncopigs carrying inducible KRASG12D and TP53R167H mutations. A total of 12 Oncopigs underwent 29 injections via flexible bronchoscopy: 18 adenovirus-Cre recombinase gene (AdCre) inductions were performed endobronchially (n = 6) and transbronchially (n = 12), and 11 control injections were performed without AdCre. Oncopigs underwent serial ch

Oxygen is essential to fuel aerobic metabolism. Some species evolved mechanisms to tolerate periods of severe hypoxia and even anoxia in their environment. Among them, goldfish (Carassius auratus) are unique, in that they do not enter a comatose state under severely hypoxic conditions. There is thus significant interest in the field of comparative physiology to uncover the mechanistic basis underlying hypoxia tolerance in goldfish, with a particular focus on the brain. Taking advantage of the recently published and annotated goldfish genome, we profile the transcriptomic response of the goldfi

Choline dehydrogenase (CHDH) is a membrane-bound enzyme belonging to the glucose-methanol-choline (GMC) oxidoreductase superfamily, which is characterized by a crucial FAD-binding domain essential for catalytic function. CHDH catalyzes the oxidation of choline to betaine aldehyde, which is further oxidized to betaine, a vital osmoprotectant and methyl donor for cellular physiology and metabolism. However, the detailed catalytic mechanism of CHDH still remains poorly understood. In our investigation, we gained purity E. coli CHDH samples in DDM (n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside) and SMA (styrene maleic

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: VAChT-Cre is a transgenic mouse line targeting slow-twitch fatigue-resistant and fast-twitch fatigue-resistant motor neurons that innervate oxidative type I and type IIa muscle fibers. To ablate these neurons, VAChT-Cre mice were crossbred with NSE-DTA mice, leading to the expression of diphtheria toxin A after Cre-mediated excision. The resulting VAChT-Cre;NSE-DTA mice exhibited motor deficits, abnormal locomotion, muscular atrophy, and tremor, making them a useful model for studying motor neuron physiology and pathology. In this study, we conducted a kinematic analysis to

Sex steroid hormones are powerful regulators of reproductive behavior and physiology in vertebrates, and steroidogenesis has distinct sex- and season-specific patterns ultimately dictated by the expression of key enzymes. Most comparative endocrinology studies, however, focus only on circulating levels of sex steroids to determine their temporal association with life-history events in what are termed associated reproductive patterns. The red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) is a notable exception; this species exhibits maximal sex behavior decoupled from maximal sex steroid

BACKGROUND: Rhodnius prolixus is a vector of Chagas disease and has become a model organism to study physiology, behavior, and pathogen interaction. The publication of its genome allowed initiating a process of comparative characterization of the gene expression profiles of diverse organs exposed to varying conditions. Brain processes control the expression of behavior and, as such, mediate immediate adjustment to a changing environment, allowing organisms to maximize their chances to survive and reproduce. The expression of fundamental behavioral processes like feeding requires fine control i

INTRODUCTION: Students in the preclinical phase have adequate clinical exposure to normal physiological findings of clinical examinations performed in healthy peers but do not have exposure to pathological findings other than theoretical knowledge, which is challenging for students during the clinical phase of curricula in examining actual patients. Simulation based medical education (SBME) has recently emerged to address this gap. This study aimed to assess performance and confidence level of simulation based clinical examination of respiratory system in preclinical undergraduate medical stud

How respiratory structures vary with, or are constrained by, an animal's environment is of central importance to diverse evolutionary and comparative physiology hypotheses. To date, quantifying insect respiratory structures and their variation has remained challenging due to their microscopic size, hence only a handful of species have been examined. Several methods for imaging insect respiratory systems are available, in many cases however, the analytical process is lethal, destructive, time consuming and labour intensive. Here, we explore and test a different approach to measuring tracheal vo

The evolutionary and ontogenetic development of the carotid body is still understudied. Research aimed at studying the comparative morphology of the organ at different periods in the individual development of various animal species should play a crucial role in understanding the physiology of the carotid body. However, despite more than two centuries of study, the human carotid body remains poorly understood. There are many knowledge gaps in particular related to the antenatal development of this structure. The aim of our work is to study the morphological and immunohistochemical characteristi

Novel therapies for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infection (BSI) are needed in the setting of reduced antibiotic susceptibilities and therapeutic failure. Ceftaroline is a cephalosporin antibiotic with MRSA activity. Although not FDA approved for MRSA BSI, ceftaroline has generated much interest as a potential treatment option. However, detailed descriptions of its use in this setting remain limited. To address this, we conducted a retrospective, multicenter, observational study of adult patients with MRSA BSI treated with at least 72 h of ceftaroline from 201

Mass transport can be generally defined as movement of material matter. The circulatory system then is a biological example given its role in the movement in transporting gases, nutrients, wastes, and chemical signals. Comparative physiology has a long history of providing new insights and advancing our understanding of circulatory mass transport across a wide array of circulatory systems. Here we focus on circulatory function of nonmodel species. Invertebrates possess diverse convection systems; that at the most complex generate pressures and perform at a level comparable to vertebrates. Many

C. elegans occurs in two natural sexes, the XX hermaphrodite and the XO male, which differ extensively in anatomy, physiology, and behavior. All somatic differences between the sexes result from the differential activity of a "global" sex determination regulatory pathway. This pathway also controls X chromosome dosage compensation, which is coordinated with sex determination by the action of the three SDC proteins. The SDC proteins control somatic and germline sex by transcriptional repression of the her-1 gene. HER-1 is a secreted protein that controls a regulatory module consisting of a tran

Continuous movement of fluid into and out of the pleural compartment occurs in normal chest physiology and in pathophysiological conditions associated with pleural effusions. RT-PCR screening and immunostaining revealed expression of water channel aquaporin-1 (AQP1) in microvascular endothelia near the visceral and parietal pleura and in mesothelial cells in visceral pleura. Comparative physiological measurements were done on wild-type vs. AQP1 null mice. Osmotically driven water transport was measured in anesthetized, mechanically ventilated mice from the kinetics of pleural fluid osmolality

Cryoamputation or physiologic amputation has been used at our institution for more than 30 years. From 1971 through 1989, 891 major lower extremity amputations were performed in 750 patients. With the use of dry ice or mechanical refrigeration, 320 (36%) physiologic amputations were performed in 292 patients. After physiologic amputation, the initially elevated white blood cell count and temperature decreased. Complications of physiologic amputation were unusual; 3% of patients developed minor freezing above the tourniquet, which did not alter the amputation level, while 1% had purulence at th
