Oculo-vestibular recoupling using galvanic vestibular stimulation to mitigate simulator sickness.

INTRODUCTION: Despite improvement in the computational capabilities of visual displays in flight simulators, intersensory visual-vestibular conflict remains the leading cause of simulator sickness (SS). By using galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), the vestibular system can be synchronized with a moving visual field in order to lessen the mismatch of sensory inputs thought to result in SS. METHODS: A multisite electrode array was used to deliver combinations of GVS in 21 normal subjects. Optimal electrode combinations were identified and used to establish GVS dose-response predictions for t

Intermittent theta burst stimulation over right somatosensory larynx cortex enhances vocal pitch-regulation in nonsingers.

While the significance of auditory cortical regions for the development and maintenance of speech motor coordination is well established, the contribution of somatosensory brain areas to learned vocalizations such as singing is less well understood. To address these mechanisms, we applied intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS), a facilitatory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocol, over right somatosensory larynx cortex (S1) and a nonvocal dorsal S1 control area in participants without singing experience. A pitch-matching singing task was performed before and after i

From attentional control to attentional spillover: a skill-level investigation of attention, movement, and performance outcomes.

Two experiments examined the impact of attention on the movement and putting accuracy of novice and experienced golfers. In Experiment 1, attentional control was manipulated via two different secondary tasks: (i) an extraneous condition in which participants judged the frequency of an auditory cue presented during their stroke and, (ii) a skill-focused condition in which participants judged whether the cue occurred closer to the starting or end point of the swing segment in which it was presented. For experts, putting performance was least accurate in the skill-focused condition and when the c

The effect of a precursor on growth of forward masking.

This study examined the effect of an on-frequency precursor on growth-of-masking (GOM) functions measured using an off-frequency masker. The signal was a 6-ms, 4-kHz tone. A GOM function was measured using a 40-ms, 2.8-kHz tone (the off-frequency masker). GOM functions were then measured with an on-frequency, fixed level precursor presented before the off-frequency masker. The precursor was 50 or 60 dB SPL, and 160 ms in duration. For the 60-dB SPL precursor, a 40-ms duration was also used. Two-line functions were fit to the GOM data to estimate the basilar membrane input-output function. The

Effects of feedback frequency and timing on acquisition, retention, and transfer of speech skills in acquired apraxia of speech.

PURPOSE: Two studies examined speech skill learning in persons with apraxia of speech (AOS). Motor-learning research shows that delaying or reducing the frequency of feedback promotes retention and transfer of skills. By contrast, immediate or frequent feedback promotes temporary performance enhancement but interferes with retention and transfer. These principles were tested in the context of a common treatment for AOS. METHOD: Two studies (N = 4, N = 2) employed single-subject treatment designs to examine acquisition and retention of speech skills in adults with AOS under different feedback

Deficits of musical timbre perception after unilateral temporal-lobe lesion revealed with multidimensional scaling.

Thirty patients with unilateral temporal lobe excisions and 15 normal control subjects were tested in a task involving judgements of timbre dissimilarity in single tone and melodic conditions. Perceptual correlates of spectral and temporal parameters resulting from changing the number of harmonics and rise-time duration, respectively, were investigated by using a multidimensional scaling technique. The results of subjects with left temporal lobe lesion suggest that they were able to use the spectral and temporal envelopes of tones independently in making perceptual judgements of single tones.

Psychophysical suppression effects for tonal and speech signals.

This experiment assessed the benefits of suppression and the impact of reduced or absent suppression on speech recognition in noise. Psychophysical suppression was measured in forward masking using tonal maskers and suppressors and band limited noise maskers and suppressors. Subjects were 10 younger and 10 older adults with normal hearing, and 10 older adults with cochlear hearing loss. For younger subjects with normal hearing, suppression measured with noise maskers increased with masker level and was larger at 2.0 kHz than at 0.8 kHz. Less suppression was observed for older than younger subj

Effect of Age, Gender and Hearing Loss on the Degree of Discomfort Due to Tinnitus.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is one of the complex symptoms of hearing described as a phantom auditory sensation without any external stimulation. Due to the subjective nature of tinnitus, perception and discomfort of tinnitus vary among the patients. The main aim of this study is to investigate the effects of gender, age and the degree of hearing loss on discomfort due to tinnitus. METHODS: Eighteen patients with tinnitus, aged 21-72 years, (9 males and 9 females) were recruited. Tinnitus discomfort was investigated by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) questionnaire. Psychoacoustic assessments of

Impaired mismatch negativity (MMN) generation in schizophrenia as a function of stimulus deviance, probability, and interstimulus/interdeviant interval.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder associated with disturbances in perception and cognition. Event-related potentials (ERP) provide a mechanism for evaluating potential mechanisms underlying neurophysiological dysfunction in schizophrenia. Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a short-duration auditory cognitive ERP component that indexes operation of the auditory sensory ('echoic') memory system. Prior studies have demonstrated impaired MMN generation in schizophrenia along with deficits in auditory sensory memory performance. MMN is elicited in an auditory oddball paradigm in which a sequence

Artificial turf surfaces: perception of safety, sporting feature, satisfaction and preference of football users.

The aim of this research is to understand the experience of the football sector on the use of artificial turf (satisfaction, safety, sporting feature, or the advantages and disadvantages). The study was conducted on a random selection of 627 male participants (404 amateur/semi-professional footballers, 101 coaches and 122 referees) that regularly train/compete on artificial turf in Spanish football leagues. The results of the skin abrasion, muscle strain and the possibility of sustaining an injury, on a Likert-type 10-point interval scale, gave a perception of 'somewhat dissatisfied' for the p

Perceptions of concussion management and testing among healthcare professionals in rugby union: a qualitative analysis.

Despite ongoing developments in head injury protocols, rugby union still faces challenges in achieving accurate, rapid and context-appropriate concussion assessment on-field and at pitch-side, with clinicians often required to make complex decisions using tools that remain imperfect. The purpose of this research is to gain insight into the perceptions and experiences of high-level rugby union healthcare professionals (HCPs) on current head injury assessment protocols. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight HCPs working in rugby union. Following a six-stage, inductive, reflexive t

[Two cases of unilateral lesion of the inferior colliculus presenting with temporally changing, distinctive tinnitus and hearing impairment].

We report two cases of unilateral lesion of the inferior colliculus presenting with distinctive tinnitus and hearing impairment. Case 1 was a 40-year-old woman under treatment for multiple sclerosis who developed sudden tinnitus in her bilateral ears, initially resembling a "propeller"-like sound, which evolved into high-pitched "hyun-hyun" tones and subsequently into sustained "hyuun-hyuun" tones. She also exhibited impaired perception of spoken language. Brain MRI revealed a new small lesion in the right inferior colliculus. Case 2 was a 49-year-old man who experienced sudden onset of tinnit

Increased event-related theta activity as a psychophysiological marker of comorbidity in children with tics and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The question as to whether coexisting tic disorder (TD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children represent a combination of two independent pathologies, a separate nosologic entity manifested by both tics and hyperactivity or a phenotype subgroup of one of the two major clinical forms has received increasing attention. The aim of the present study was to classify the TD+ADHD comorbidity in the neurocognitive domain and to elucidate the neurophysiological background of TD+ADHD coexistence by analyzing event-related electroencephalographic (EEG) oscillations in

Fluid volume displacement at the oval and round windows with air and bone conduction stimulation.

The fluids in the cochlea are normally considered incompressible, and the fluid volume displacement of the oval window (OW) and the round window (RW) should be equal and of opposite phase. However, other channels, such as the cochlear and vestibular aqueducts, may affect the fluid flow. To test if the OW and RW fluid flows are equal and of opposite phase, the volume displacement was assessed by multiple point measurement at the windows with a laser Doppler vibrometer. This was done during air conduction (AC) stimulation in seven fresh human temporal bones, and with bone conduction (BC) stimula

From Spectral Resolution to Speech Perception: A Review of Findings in Postlingually Deafened Adult Cochlear Implant Listeners.

PURPOSE: Reduced spectral resolution limits speech recognition in cochlear implant (CI) listeners. Although many studies have examined this association, uncertainties remain regarding its strength and contributing methodological and clinical factors. This narrative review synthesizes findings from studies of postlingually deafened adult CI listeners, focusing on psychophysical measures of spectral resolution and their strengths and limitations. METHOD: We reviewed studies published through January 2025 that examined the relationship between psychophysical measures of spectral resolution and s

Cochlear implantation for tinnitus in adults with bilateral hearing loss: protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external stimulus, often experienced as a ringing or buzzing sound. Subjective tinnitus is assumed to origin from changes in neural activity caused by reduced or lack of auditory input, for instance due to hearing loss. Since auditory deprivation is thought to be one of the causes of tinnitus, increasing the auditory input by cochlear implantation might be a possible treatment. In studies assessing cochlear implantation for patients with hearing loss, tinnitus relief was seen as a secondary outcome. Therefore, we will assess the effe

[Prosody and reading: Temporal and melodic characteristics in the dyslexic child in reading and narration].

Dyslexia is widely associated to a massive phonological awareness deficit. This deficit leads to difficulties in grapheme to phoneme conversions in reading and difficulties in words and sentences productions. The origin of the phonological deficit is partially explained by the magnocellular, cerebellar and articulatory theories. Recently, an increasing number of studies demonstrated the relationship between prosody and reading and, more specifically, the potential key role of suprasegmental phonology in the healthy development of phonological representations. The aim of this study is to explor
