Pityriasis rosea (PR) is an acute, self-limiting exanthematous disease, associated with the reactivation of the human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and/or human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) that usually lasts 6-8 weeks. We studied, from a clinical and virological point of view, 12 patients in whom the features of PR lasted longer than 12 weeks, defining this form of the disease as persistent PR (PPR). As in typical PR, in most of the PPR patients the disease begins with a herald patch, but compared to typical PR, systemic symptoms and oral lesions are more common. Moreover, in PPR we found a persistent react…

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common papulosquamous disorder that may be related to primary infection or endogenous reactivation of human herpesvirus 7 and 6. Based on morphology, distribution, and size of lesions, several atypical variants of PR have been described. PR following the lines of Blaschko represents an atypical variant that has seldom been described in the literature. Here, we describe a child with diabetes who developed PR in a symmetrical, blaschkolinear configuration.

Pityriasis lichenoides (PL) represents a spectrum of inflammatory skin diseases comprising pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) and pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC). This study aimed to provide a summary of effective treatments for PL. A systematic review was performed according to PRISMA guidelines for studies investigating PL treatment including ≥3 subjects and published in English between 1 January 1970 and 15 April 2019. A total of 441 papers were screened, and 37 original manuscripts meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were found, including 12 case series, 1…

Pityriasis amiantacea was first described in 1832. The disease may be secondary to any skin condition that primarily affects the scalp, including seborrheic dermatitis. Its pathogenesis remains uncertain. We aim to analyze the epidemiological and clinical profiles of patients with pityriasis amiantacea to better understand treatment responses. We identified seven cases of pityriasis amiantacea and a female predominance in a sample of 63 pediatric patients with seborrheic dermatitis followed for an average of 20.4 months. We reported a mean age of 5.9 years. Five patients were female, with a me…

BACKGROUND: The effect of pityriasis rosea (PR) on the outcome of pregnancy has not been previously reported.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the possible impact of PR in pregnant women.
METHODS: In all, 38 women who developed PR during pregnancy were observed. In one of them, who developed PR at 10 weeks' gestation and aborted 2 weeks later, plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, maternal skin, and placental and embryonic tissues were studied by quantitative calibrated real-time polymerase chain reaction for human herpesviruses (HHV)-6 and -7. Controls included plasma from 36 healt…

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis alba (PA) is a skin disorder characterized by asymptomatic, variably hypopigmented, slightly scaling patches with indistinct margins. It is sometimes difficult to clinically differentiate PA from other hypopigmented disorders such as naevus depigmentosus.
AIM: To examine the clinical and histopathological characteristics of PA that are important in differentiating PA from other hypopigmenting disorders.
METHODS: A clinical survey was carried out on 56 patients with PA. Histopathological features were investigated with immunostains for NKI/beteb antibody, melanoma antig…

Although pityriasis versicolor is the only human disease for which Malassezia yeasts have been fully established as pathogens, it is still not clear which species are implicated. Most studies carried out in recent years support our hypothesis - proposed in 1999 - that Malassezia globosa is the predominant species in pityriasis versicolor lesions, at least in temperate climates. Confirmation of this hypothesis could help us understand the conditions, as yet unclear, that induce transformation of this yeast from the saprophytic form present in healthy skin to the parasitic form, characterized by…

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis lichenoides is a papulosquamous disorder of unknown etiology with remissions and exacerbations. Histopathology helps greatly in the diagnosis of this condition.
AIM: We studied clinical and histopathological features of pityriasis lichenoides in our patients.
METHODS: This is a 3-year retrospective and prospective, descriptive study of all patients clinically diagnosed as pityriasis lichenoides and confirmed by histopathology. All patients were studied clinically and histopathologically.
RESULTS: There were 51 (30 males and 21 females) cases of pityriasis lichenoides …
