A case of Listeria monocytogenes placental infection without foetal contamination is reported. The infant, normal at birth, developed progressive and severe neurological involvement. At 8 months of age, magnetic resonance imaging showed a bilateral cerebral atrophy. The responsibility of placental damage in altering the utero-placental blood flow with subsequent foetal hypoxia is discussed.

We have examined amniotic fluid and cultured supernatants of a variety of placental cells for the presence of colony-stimulating factor (CSF) activity. The supernatants of cultured human choriocarcinoma cell lines, Jeg and Jar, contained CSF activity that induced the formation of granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming unit (CFU-GM) and multipotential colony-forming unit (CFU-GEMM) colonies. Cultured supernatants of nontransformed rat placental cells, chorionic villous cells, and amniotic fluid also induced CFU-GM colonies.

Marginal placental bleeding is a distinct entity, marked (usually) by minor degrees of vaginal bleeding and significantly associated with premature labor and premature rupture of the membranes. We report on a postpartally decreased girl with several malformations: turricephalus, deep root of the nose, prognathism, choanal atresia, low-set dysplastic ears, fourth additional blood vessel originating from the thoracic aorta. Nearly 70% of the placenta consisted of multiple chorioangiomas. A possible correlation between fetal malformations and placental chorangiomas is discussed. There is no valuable reference to a hereditary component in the development of chorioangiomas.

Fifty-seven cases of placental abruption detected by sonography were retrospectively reviewed. The location of hemorrhage was subchorionic in 46 cases (81%), retroplacental in nine cases (16%), and preplacental in two cases (4%).
