Gibberellin-mediated internode elongation for grafting and early flowering induction in Brassicaceae crops.

In Brassicaceae crops such as cabbage and turnip, which are harvested for their vegetative organs, floral induction can reduce the eating quality of these organs. Therefore, developing late-flowering varieties that are insensitive to vernalization is a key breeding objective. However, a major challenge in breeding these cultivars lies in the contradiction between the late-flowering trait and the need to induce flowering for crossing. To address this, we developed a flowering induction technique using grafting, in which gibberellin-induced elongated internodes are used as scions and grafted ont

Salicylic Acid Steers the Growth-Immunity Tradeoff.

Plants possess an effective immune system to combat most microbial attackers. The activation of immune responses to biotrophic pathogens requires the hormone salicylic acid (SA). Accumulation of SA triggers a plethora of immune responses (like massive transcriptional reprogramming, cell wall strengthening, and production of secondary metabolites and antimicrobial proteins). A tradeoff of strong immune responses is the active suppression of plant growth and development. The tradeoff also works the opposite way, where active growth and developmental processes suppress SA production and immune re

Provitamin A biofortification of crop plants: a gold rush with many miners.

Carotenoids are synthesized de novo by plants, where they play fundamental physiological roles as photosynthetic pigments and precursors for signaling molecules. They are also essential components of a healthy diet, as dietary antioxidants and vitamin A precursors. Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem in developing countries, which has prompted a series of efforts toward the biofortification of plant-derived foods with provitamin A carotenoids (mainly β-carotene), giving rise to 'golden' crops. Since the 'golden rice' exploit, a number of biofortified crops have been generated, usin

Genetic diversity, population structure, and interspecific differentiation in introduced breeding populations of Eucalyptus sideroxylon and Eucalyptus camaldulensis established in northern Chile.

BACKGROUND: Breeding populations of Eucalyptus sideroxylon and Eucalyptus camaldulensis have been established in the Coquimbo Region of northern Chile, immediately south of the Atacama Desert, owing to their ecological adaptability and tangible economic value. However, their genetic resources remain poorly characterized outside their native ranges. This study aimed to characterize genetic diversity, intraspecific population structure, and interspecific differentiation using a high-density 72K SNP array in a mixed-species breeding trial established in northern Chile. RESULTS: After stringent q

Deciphering seasonal shifts, genotype × environment interactions effect on antioxidant activity, bioactive compounds and antinutritional factors in a diverse panel of leafy amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) germplasm: genetic and multivariate insights for breeding.

BACKGROUND: Leafy amaranths (Amaranthus spp.) are promising traditional food and nutritional sources in Asia and Africa. They hold excellent value as underutilized, climate-resilient vegetable crops with versatile potential for food and nutritional security. Majority of the vegetable amaranth germplasm cultivated by Indian farmers consists of local landraces, and has not been subjected to systematic characterization. Hence, comprehensive characterization of amaranth germplasm for bioactive, antioxidant, and antinutritional factors in contrasting environments is vital for accelerating breeding

Genetic Variation, Polyploidy, Hybridization Influencing the Aroma Profiles of Rosaceae Family.

BACKGROUND: The fragrance and aroma of Rosaceae plants are complex traits influenced by a multitude of factors, with genetic variation standing out as a key determinant which is largely impacted by polyploidy. Polyploidy serves as a crucial evolutionary mechanism in plants, significantly boosting genetic diversity and fostering speciation. OBJECTIVE: This review focuses on the Rosaceae family, emphasizing how polyploidy influences the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are essential for the aromatic characteristics of economically important fruits like strawberries, apples

Variations in the 24 h temporal patterns and time budgets of grazing, rumination, and idling behaviors in grazing dairy cows in a New Zealand system.

This study investigated the variations in the temporal distributions and the lengths of times utilized for grazing, ruminating, and idling behaviors by grazing dairy cows over 24 h. Spring-calved lactating dairy cows (N = 54) from three breeds, Holstein-Friesian (HFR), Jersey (JE), and KiwiCross (KC) in different lactations (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and with different breeding worth index values (103 < BW > 151) were selected. The cows were managed through a rotational grazing scheme and milked once a day at 0500 hours. The cows grazed mainly pasture and consumed additional feeds (maize silage and turni

Changes in lipids metabolism indices as a result of different form of selenium supplementation in chickens.

Selenium is an essential element that is important for many metabolic processes. Feed components used in chicken nutrition, especially cereals, may be deficient in selenium, hence selenium supplementation is necessary. Taking into account the progress in breeding, and thus the higher demand of birds for this element, it seems obvious to investigate an increased selenium dose in the diet of chickens. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of feed enriched with different forms of selenium at an increased dose of 0.5 mg/kg feed on the profile and metabolism of fatty acids in the breast m

Pneumocystis Colonization in Dogs Is as in Humans.

Pneumocystis is an atypical fungus that resides in the pulmonary parenchyma of many mammals, including humans and dogs. Immunocompetent human hosts are usually asymptomatically colonised or show subtle clinical signs, but some immunocompromised people can develop florid life-threatening Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP). Since much less is known concerning Pneumocystis in dogs, we posit the question: can Pneumocystis colonization be present in dogs with inflammatory airway or lung disease caused by other pathogens or disease processes? In this study, Pneumocystis DNA was detected in bronchoalveolar

The novel use of urinary androgens to optimise detection of the fertile window in giant pandas.

ABSTRACT: Giant pandas are mono-estrus seasonal breeders, with the breeding season typically occurring in the spring. Successful fertilization is followed by an embryonic diapause, of variable length, with birth in the late summer/autumn. There is a need for additional understanding of giant panda reproductive physiology, and the development of enhanced biomarkers for impending proestrus and peak fertility. We aimed to determine the utility of non-invasive androgen measurements in the detection of both proestrus and estrus. Urine from 20 cycles (-40 days to +10 days from peak estrus) from 5 fe

Genotype-environment interaction and stability of fiber properties and growth traits in triploid hybrid clones of Populus tomentosa.

BACKGROUND: Clones provide a sensitive method for evaluating genotypic stability and detecting genotype-environment (G × E) interactions because of non-additive genetic effects among clones and there being no genetic effect among ramets of an ortet. With this study, we aimed to confirm and expand earlier findings, estimate stability parameters, and provide accurate estimates of clonal repeatabilities and genetic gains for a triploid breeding program of P. tomentosa Carr. RESULTS: Six 5-year-old clonal trials established in Northern China were used to determine the clonal variation, clone × si

Anthocyanins in woody ornamental plants: biosynthesis, regulatory networks, and trade-offs in stress adaptation.

Anthocyanins are important flavonoid metabolites that are instrumental to plant adaptation to adverse environmental conditions. Increasing evidence has shown that both biotic and abiotic stresses can markedly affect anthocyanin biosynthesis and accumulation, thereby influencing plant defense capacity, stress tolerance, and metabolic reprogramming. In addition to serving as pigments, anthocyanins contribute to plant protection through multiple mechanisms, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, metal chelation, photoprotection, and the modulation of stress-related signaling pathways

RAP2.3 Is Required for MYB51 and SIGMA3 Expression During the Response of Arabidopsis thaliana to Multifactorial Stress Combination.

In nature, plants are subjected to multiple environmental stress factors simultaneously or sequentially. Recent studies revealed that when three or more stress factors impact a plant simultaneously (termed 'multifactorial stress combination'; MFSC), plant survival declines, even if the intensity of each individual stress involved in the MFSC is low. We previously identified RAP2.3 as a key transcription factor (TF) required for Arabidopsis thaliana survival, specifically under a MFSC of salt+excess light+heat stress (i.e., S + EL + HS). Here we report that RAP2.3 regulates the expression of SI
