Plants exhibit diverse regeneration strategies to heal wounds, regrow organs, and clonally propagate. These regeneration strategies depend on inductive cues such as wounding, stress or hormones initiating cell division and cell differentiation. However, wounding activates both regeneration and defence responses, and it has become clear that plants actively decide when to regenerate and what to regenerate. By integrating cell wall, hormonal, mechanical and environmental cues, plants can initiate and shape diverse regeneration outcomes such as callus formation, root regeneration, grafting and sh

Many bioactive compounds with known effects on human physiology and disease have been identified through studies of plants used in traditional medicine. Some of these substances occur also in common food plants, and hence could play a significant role in relation to human health. Food plants of the Apiaceae plant family such as carrots, celery and parsley, contain a group of bioactive aliphatic C17-polyacetylenes. These polyacetylenes have shown to be highly toxic towards fungi, bacteria, and mammalian cells, and to display neurotoxic, anti-inflammatory and anti-platelet-aggregatory effects an

In examining the growth kinetics of cell suspensions of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), the increase in biomass with time was observed to be linear over the entire batch growth period of up to 20 days. Although batch growth profiles were reproducible utilizing the same inoculum, growth rates varied tremendously when experiments were inoculated with cells from different flasks. Both of these phenomena are difficult to explain with conventional batch growth models. In a series of a experiments, phosphate was determined to be the growth-rate-limiting substrate. By expressing growth rate in term

The role of the alternative respiratory pathway in the protection of plants against biotic stress was examined in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana attenuata) plants (irAOX) silenced in the expression of ALTERNATIVE OXIDASE (AOX) gene. Wild-type and irAOX plants were independently challenged with (1) chewing herbivores (Manduca sexta), (2) piercing-sucking insects (Empoasca spp.), and (3) bacterial pathogens (Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato DC3000), showing that all these treatments can strongly elicit accumulation of AOX gene transcripts in wild-type plants. When N. attenuata chemical defenses and

Neurodegenerative diseases are brought on by the loss of function of nerve cells in the brain or peripheral nervous system and afflict millions of people worldwide. Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease are the two most common neurodegenerative diseases. These neurodegenerative diseases are multi-factorial, progressive, age-related, and influenced by two factors: genetic and environmental. Successful treatment of neurodegenerative diseases is yet a challenging task due to lack of selectivity, toxicity, and the growth of multi-drug-resistant cells to the currently available drugs. Plant-d

Several genes in the Agrobacterium tumefaciens transferred (T)-DNA encode proteins that are involved in developmental alterations, leading to the formation of tumours in infected plants. We investigated the role of the protein encoded by the Atu6002 gene, the function of which is completely unknown. Atu6002 expression occurs in Agrobacterium-induced tumours, and is also activated on activation of plant cell division by growth hormones. Within the expressing plant cells, the Atu6002 protein is targeted to the plasma membrane. Interestingly, constitutive ectopic expression of Atu6002 in transgen…

Our results indicate that overexpression of OsSPL1 in transgenic tobacco plants attenuated disease resistance and facilitated programmed cell death. Long-chain base phosphates including sphingosine-1-phosphate have been shown to act as signaling mediators in regulating programmed cell death (PCD) and stress responses in mammals. In the present study, we characterized a rice gene OsSPL1, encoding a putative sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase that is involved in metabolism of sphingosine-1-phosphate. Expression of OsSPL1 was down-regulated in rice plants after treatments with salicylic acid, benzothi

Envelope glycoprotein E of the dengue virus, which plays a crucial role in its entry into host cells, has an immunogenic domain III (EIII, amino acids 297-394), which is capable of inducing neutralizing antibodies. However, mice immunized with EIII protein without adjuvant elicited low immune responses. To improve low immune responses, a DNA fragment, consisting of cholera toxin B subunit and EIII gene (CTB-EIII), was constructed and introduced into tobacco plant cells (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. MD609) by Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation methods. The integration and transcripti…

During plant-pathogen interactions, the plant cell wall forms part of active defence against invaders. In recent years, cell wall-editing enzymes, associated with growth and development, have been related to plant susceptibility or resistance. Our previous work identified a role for several tomato and Arabidopsis endo-1,4-β-glucanases (EGs) in plant-pathogen interactions. Here we studied the response of the Arabidopsis thaliana T-DNA insertion mutant lacking EG Korrigan1 (KOR1) infected with Pseudomonas syringae. KOR1 is predicted to be an EG which is thought to participate in cellulose biosyn

Enzymatic preparations obtained from young plants and cell cultures of capulin were screened for hydroxynitrile lyase activity. The three week old plants, grown under sterile conditions, were used to establish a solid cell culture. Crude preparations obtained from this plant material were evaluated for the transformation of benzaldehyde to the corresponding cyanohydrin (mandelonitrile). The results show that the crude material from roots, stalks, and leaves of young plants and calli of roots, stalks, internodes and petioles biocatalyzed the addition of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) to benzaldehyde wi

Plant activators are agrochemicals that activate the plant immune system, thereby enhancing disease resistance. Due to their prophylactic and durable effects on a wide spectrum of diseases, plant activators can provide synergistic crop protection when used in combination with traditional pest controls. Although plant activators have achieved great success in wet-rice farming practices in Asia, their use is still limited. To isolate novel plant activators applicable to other crops, we screened a chemical library using a method that can selectively identify immune-priming compounds. Here, we rep

The spaceflight environment of the International Space Station poses a multitude of stresses on plant growth including reduced gravity. Plants exposed to microgravity and other conditions on the ISS display root skewing, changes in gene expression and protein abundance that may result in changes in cell wall composition, antioxidant accumulation and modification of growth anisotropy. Systematic studies that address the effects of microgravity on cellular organelles are lacking but altered numbers and sizes of vacuoles have been detected in previous flights. The prominent size of plant vacuoles

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important negative regulators of genes involved in physiological and pathological processes in plants and animals. Recent studies have shown that miRNAs might regulate gene expression among different species in a cross-kingdom manner. However, the specific roles of plant miRNAs in animals remain poorly understood and somewhat. Herein, we found that plant MIR156 regulates proliferation of intestinal cells both in vitro and in vivo. Continuous administration of a high plant miRNA diet or synthetic MIR156 elevated MIR156 levels and inhibited the Wnt/β-catenin signaling path
