Accidental pharmacological poisonings in young children: population-based study in three settings.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacological poisonings in young children are avoidable. Previous studies report calls to poisons centres, presentations to emergency departments (ED) or hospital admissions. There are limited data assessing concurrent management of poisonings across all three settings. We aimed to describe accidental pharmacological poisonings in young children across our Poisons Information Centre (PIC), EDs and hospitals. METHODS: A population-based study in New South Wales, Australia, of PIC calls, ED presentations and hospital admissions for accidental pharmacological poisoning in childr

Using poison center exposure calls to predict methadone poisoning deaths.

PURPOSE: There are more drug overdose deaths in the Untied States than motor vehicle fatalities. Yet the US vital statistics reporting system is of limited value because the data are delayed by four years. Poison centers report data within an hour of the event, but previous studies suggested a small proportion of poisoning deaths are reported to poison centers (PC). In an era of improved electronic surveillance capabilities, exposure calls to PCs may be an alternate indicator of trends in overdose mortality. METHODS: We used PC call counts for methadone that were reported to the Researched Ab

Utilization of hyperinsulinemia euglycemia and intravenous fat emulsion following poison center recommendations.

Hyperinsulinemia euglycemia (HIE) and intravenous fat emulsion (IFE) may be beneficial in the treatment of calcium channel (CCB) and beta receptor (BB) antagonist toxicity. Many poison control centers (PCC) now recommend use. Healthcare providers may be unfamiliar with these treatments and may not institute them despite recommendations. We sought to determine how often HIE and IFE are recommended by a statewide PCC in CCB and BB toxicity, how often those recommendations are implemented, and whether a faxable information sheet increased adherence. All cases of CCB and BB exposure from January 2…

Trends in nitrous oxide abuse and misuse: a 22-year analysis of United States poison center data.

INTRODUCTION: Nitrous oxide is widely available for medical, industrial, and culinary use. However, its euphoric effects and accessibility have contributed to increasing recreational abuse/misuse. Chronic exposure disrupts vitamin B12 function, resulting in potentially severe neurologic and psychiatric complications. Although case reports suggest a rise in abuse/misuse, trends in the United States remain poorly characterized. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of intentional nitrous oxide abuse/misuse reported to the National Poison Data System® from 2003 through 2024. Included ca

Intentional Misuse and Abuse of Loperamide: A New Look at a Drug with "Low Abuse Potential".

BACKGROUND: Despite its opioid properties, loperamide has long been thought to have low abuse potential due to its poor absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and limited potential to cross the blood-brain barrier. A recent patient reportedly taking loperamide to avoid heroin withdrawal symptoms, at doses approximately 100 times those recommended, directed our attention to this issue. OBJECTIVES: 1) Investigate number of cases of intentional loperamide abuse and misuse reported to poison centers between 2009 and 2015; 2) Compile reports of clinical effects of loperamide abuse; and 3) Sear

Characterization of edible marijuana product exposures reported to United States poison centers.

CONTEXT: Edible marijuana products are sold as brownies, cookies, and candies, which may be indistinguishable from counterparts without marijuana and are palatable to children and adults. The consumption of an entire product containing multiple dose-units may result in overdose. OBJECTIVE: To characterize edible marijuana exposures reported to US poison centers with subgroup analysis by age. METHODS: We analyzed single substance, human exposure calls coded to marijuana brownies, candies, cookies, beverages, or other foods reported to the National Poison Data System from January 2013 to Decem

[Acute management of patients bitten by poisonous snakes].

The management of poisonous snake bites includes first aid and clinical medical treatment. First aid consists of reassurement of the patient, immobilisation of the bitten limb and rapid transport to the nearest hospital to monitor the vital functions. In no case suction, incision or tight bandages should be applied. The degree of envenomation can be classified in three categories depending on the spread of the symptoms: no symptoms, only local non-progressive symptoms, and systemic or local rapidly progressive symptoms (severe envenomation). Antivenin therapy is indicated in severe envenomatio

Poisoning due to household products: A ten years retrospective analysis of telephone calls to the National Poisons Information Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.

Extensive use of different chemicals in various fields and their easy availability has led to an increased incidence of accidental and intentional poisoning in developing countries including India. A diverse range of household products commonly used for domestic purposes comprise pesticides, household cleaners, thermometer mercury, antiseptics, kerosene, paint thinners etc. Any of these products, if misused or mishandled can cause poisoning. In India, the National Poisons Centre (NPIC) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, provides information on management of poisoning to

Detection of green tobacco sickness by a regional poison center.

This study describes epidemiological patterns of Green Tobacco Sickness (GTS) reported to a regional poison center July 24 through September 24, 1991, and investigates the feasibility of using such a center to expand the understanding of GTS. Records from the Kentucky Regional Poison Center (KRPC) for 1991 were searched for exposure reports containing 1 of 3 agents likely to be implicated in GTS. The search identified 104 exposure reports, which were examined, coded and analyzed. Of these, we determined that 78 were likely to represent GTS cases. Of the 78 persons with suspected GTS, 78% were
