Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and dengue in Argentina: current knowledge and future directions.

Since the reinfestation of South American countries by Ae. aegypti, dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) have become a major public health concern. The aim of this paper was to review the information related with Aedes vectors and dengue in Argentina since the reintroduction of Ae. aegypti in 1986. The geographic distribution of Ae. albopictus is restricted to the Northeast, and that of Ae. aegypti has expanded towards the South and the West in comparison with the records during the eradication campaign in the 1960s. Since 1998, 4,718 DF cases have been reported concentrated in

Effective population size associated with sky-island distribution in the summit rat, Rattus baluensis, a mountain Bornean endemic.

Tropical mountains are hotspots of biodiversity, and they can harbor species with sky-island distributions on mountaintops. The summit rat, Rattus baluensis, is a Bornean endemic previously known from two populations in the Kinabalu range. Here, we report the discovery of a third, genetically distinct population on Mt. Trusmadi, Sabah, Borneo. Using 27 nuclear introns genotyped in 44 individuals, we show that this population is genetically isolated and more differentiated than those in the Kinabalu range. ABC analyses reveal the three populations likely became isolated in mountain tops during

Drivers of the range expansion of the European catfish (Silurus glanis) within its native distribution.

The European catfish Silurus glanis L. continues to spread as an invasive species in Europe. Meanwhile, increasing abundance and range expan … ading to increases in growth and abundance. Statistical modelling identified warming and increasing population density of invasive gobies as likely contributors to this shift. Given that catfish predation on native species can be expected to increase dramatically, there is an urgent need for new management strategies. It is recommended that catfish removal rates sho …

Onset of type 1 diabetes mellitus in rural areas of the USA.

BACKGROUND: In the USA, the epidemiologic features of type 1 diabetes are not well-defined across all 50 states. However, the advent of large nationwide insurance databases enables the investigation of where type 1 diabetes cases occur throughout the country. METHODS: An integrated database from a large nationwide health insurer in the USA (Clinformatics Data Mart Database) was used, from 2001 to 2017. The database contained longitudinal information on approximately 77 million people. RESULTS: The incidence of type 1 diabetes was greatest in areas of low population density across the 50 stat…

Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in an urban area of Northeastern Brazil.

INTRODUCTION:: The sandfly fauna is well studied globally. In Brazil, sandfly fauna is very diverse in the Northeast region, especially in states such as Maranhão, Ceará, and Bahia. However, in the State of Pernambuco, the distribution of these insects is still not well known. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the different species that constitute the sandfly fauna in an urban area in the Northeast region of Brazil, where an outbreak of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was recently reported. METHODS:: The sandflies were collected from an urban area endemic for VL, at five coll

Determinants of the Transmission Variation of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in China.

Severe outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) have occurred in China for decades. Our understanding of the HFMD transmission proce … curred yearly, and the average age at infection and the fadeout were negatively correlated with the population density. In the southeast, HFMD transmission was governed by the combined effects of the birth rate, the relative humidity and the interaction of the Health System Performance and the log of the population density. When the Health System Performance was low …

Methyl salicylate attracts natural enemies and reduces populations of soybean aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in soybean agroecosystems.

Methyl salicylate, an herbivore-induced plant volatile, has been shown to attract natural enemies and affect herbivore behavior. In this study, methyl salicylate was examined for its attractiveness to natural enemies of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and for its direct effects on soybean aphid population growth rates. Methyl salicylate lures were deployed in plots within organic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] fields. Sticky card traps adjacent to and 1.5 m from the lure measured the relative abundance of natural enemies, and soybean aphid populations were

Dispersion patterns and sampling plans for Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) in citrus.

The abundance and spatial dispersion of Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) were studied in 34 grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macfad.) and six sweet orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] orchards from March to August 2006 when the pest is more abundant in southern Texas. Although flush shoot infestation levels did not vary with host plant species, densities of D. citri eggs, nymphs, and adults were significantly higher on sweet orange than on grapefruit. D. citri immatures also were found in significantly higher numbers in the southeastern quadrant of trees than other parts of the can

Distribution patterns, population status and conservation of Melanosuchus niger and Caiman yacare (Crocodylia, Alligatoridae) in oxbow lakes of the Ichilo river floodplain, Bolivia.

Caiman yacare (lagarto) and Melanosuchus niger (black caiman), sympatric species in the Bolivian Amazon basin, have been severely overexploited in the past. We present the results of a standardized survey of C. yacare and M. niger populations in order to evaluate their actual population status in twelve oxbow lakes of the Ichilo River floodplain. Additionally we explored the effect of environmental and anthropogenic variables on caiman distribution patterns. The average density of C yacare and M niger in the shoreline of floodplain lakes was of 6 and 1 ind/km, respectively. For both species, t

Diversity and species composition of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in a Venezuelan urban focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The present study examined the spatial and temporal abundance and diversity of phlebotomine sand flies in an area of Venezuela that is an ancient focus of leishmaniasis. The study was conducted in 6 stations in urban localities in Trujillo City, located in northwestern Venezuela (9 degrees 22' 24" N, 70 degrees 26' 08" W), which is located in a mountain range in the Andean ecoregion (altitude = 600-1,010 m). During 1995-99, entomological surveys were conducted after and before the rainy season. Shannon light traps were operated from 1800 to 2000 h in peridomestic site trap locations. Twelve sp

[Sandflies (Diptera, psychodidae) in a secondary forest area in the Paco do Lumiar city, Maranhao, Brazil: a leishmaniasis transmission area].

This paper analyzes the wealth of species, relative abundance, seasonal fluctuation, and nocturnal activity of sandflies. The field survey was conducted in a "capoeira" (secondary forest) area in the county of Paço do Lumiar, Maranhão, where cutaneous and transmission of visceral leishmaniasis frequently occurs. Sandflies were captured by CDC-type light traps from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, once a month, from March 1997 to February 1998. A total of 489 specimens were collected (251 males and 238 females), distributed among 10 species: Lutzomyia antunesi (45.19%), Lutzomyia whitmani (29.4%), Lutzomyia

Urban and suburban malaria in Rondônia (Brazilian Western Amazon) II. Perennial transmissions with high anopheline densities are associated with human environmental changes.

Longitudinal entomological surveys were performed in Vila Candelária and adjacent rural locality of Bate Estaca concomitantly with a clinical epidemiologic malaria survey. Vila Candelária is a riverside periurban neighborhood of Porto Velho, capital of the state of Rondônia in the Brazilian Amazon. High anopheline densities were found accompanying the peak of rainfall, as reported in rural areas of the region. Moreover, several minor peaks of anophelines were recorded between the end of the dry season and the beginning of the next rainy season. These secondary peaks were related to permanent a

Dog overpopulation and diagnosis of intestinal parasites on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos 2016.

Dog overpopulation and diseases are hazards to native island species and humans on the Galapagos. The main objective of the study reported here was to estimate the observed human:dog ratio on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos in September 2016. In addition, dog demographic data were used to model the expected annual dog population growth in the next 10 years. A secondary objective was to measure the burden of dogs infected with intestinal parasites. The observed human:dog ratio was 964:202 (or 4.77:1), which extrapolates to 3290 dogs; an increase of 31% in the dog population on Santa Cruz from 2014

Distribution of mosquitoes in relation to urban landscape characteristics.

The current global increase in prevalence of vector borne diseases, as well as an expansion of tropical infections to more temperate zones, justifies further studies on vector populations. Urban areas may favour viral transmission to humans through close contacts between the vectors and the vertebrate hosts, and also affecting mosquito populations by offering larval habitat, refuges and adequate microclimates to survive the winter. This work analyses the spatial distribution of potential vector mosquitoes in relation to landscape characteristics in an urban environment in a temperate climate r

Schrödinger's Penguin? Divergent population trajectories and the challenge of assessing the threat status of the Erect-crested penguin.

"Schrödinger's Cat" is a quantum mechanics thought experiment in which a cat in a sealed box is considered both alive and dead until the box is opened and its true state observed. In species threat assessments, the reverse paradox can apply. We present the case of the Erect-crested penguin (Eudyptes sclateri), one of four extant penguin species currently listed as "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List - a classification based largely on limited and inconsistent observations from the 1970s. Between 2022 and 2024, we surveyed the entire global population of Erect-crested penguins, a species confined

Seasonal characteristics and trend analysis of vector mosquitoes in Shandong province from 2018 to 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Mosquitoes are major vectors of various human pathogenic viruses, posing a significant and evolving public health threat. This is particularly true for China's Shandong Province, which documented its northernmost local dengue fever outbreak in 2017, highlighting its vulnerability to sustained mosquito-borne disease transmission. In the context of the lack of universal vaccines, enhancing surveillance to inform precision control is critical. This study aims to characterize the population dynamics, seasonal patterns, and long-term trends of vector mosquitoes in Shandong Province fr
