Introduction: Autologous hemopoietic stem cell transplantation remains a promising therapy in certain malignant and non-malignant conditions. The procedure, however, will increase the risk of complications, most notably early and late infections. Aim: To analyze the frequency and spectrum of pathogens in early (<+100 days) post-transplant infections and to evaluate risk factors for mortality. Method: Prospectively collected data from 699 patients undergoing autologous hemopoietic stem cell transplantation between 2007 and 2014 at our center were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Results:

Underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a common disorder characterized by abdominal pain associated to a change in stool consistency or frequency, include low-grade inflammation and intestinal microbiota changes. Few and disappointing data are available for prebiotics. A few controlled trials (RCTs) of probiotics are instead available with favourable effects, although most are limited by suboptimal design and small sample size. A recent report from the Rome foundation group included 32 RCTs of probiotics, most of which showed an overall modest improvement i

The objective of this study was to examine venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis use, risk reduction, and readmission in medically ill patients during hospitalization and after discharge. This 5-year retrospective study linked outpatient files from MarketScan Commercial and Medicare Supplemental databases. Patients were categorized into prophylaxis and non-prophylaxis groups based on guideline-recommended anticoagulant use from the index date to 180 days posthospital discharge and before the first VTE event date. Outcome variables were VTE events and rehospitalization. Risk adjustment was c

BACKGROUND: The increase of the atopical disorders can be partially explained by two factors, the infectious disease in developed and developing countries, and the changes in immunization programs, infections such as measles, whooping cough or tuberculosis can modify the immune response. Recent studies have demonstrated that an inverse relation could exist between the response to late cutaneus hypersensitivity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and atopic condition. Also, a strong positive response has been associated with low levels of IgE and Th1 cytokines. However some authors have not found pos

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a catastrophic disorder of the central nervous system, most commonly resulting from traumatic events such as motor vehicle collisions or falls, but it can also arise from non-traumatic causes including neoplastic, infectious, or degenerative diseases. Respiratory complications are among the most frequent and life-threatening sequelae of SCI. In the acute phase, up to 80% of patients experience respiratory dysfunction, including pneumonia, atelectasis, and respiratory failure. These issues are particularly pronounced in individuals with high cervical injuries, where

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a complex, immune-mediated, disorder which leads to several gastrointestinal and systemic manifestations determining a poor quality of life, disability, and other negative health outcomes. Our knowledge of this condition has greatly improved over the last few decades, and a comprehensive management should take into account both biological (i.e., disease-related, patient-related) and non-biological (i.e., socioeconomic, cultural, environmental, behavioral) factors which contribute to the diseas

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile vasculitis that occurs mostly in children younger than five years. KD involves multiple intricately connected inflammatory reactions activated by a cytokine cascade. Despite therapeutic advances, coronary artery damage may develop in some patients, who will be at risk of clinical cardiovascular events and even sudden death. The etiology of KD remains unclear; however, it may involve both genetic and environmental factors leading to aberrant inflammatory responses. Given the young age of onset, prenatal or perinatal exposure may be etiologically relevan

BACKGROUND: Opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) is a rare, immune-mediated neurological disorder. In adults, the pathogenesis can be idiopathic, post-infectious or paraneoplastic, the latter etiology belonging to the ever-expanding group of defined paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS). In contrast to other phenotypes of PNS, OMS cannot be ascribed to a single pathogenic autoantibody. Here, we report the first detailed case of paraneoplastic, antibody-negative OMS occurring in association with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (pNET).

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has emerged as a global public health emergency due to its expansion capacity and ability to cause neurological and congenital diseases. Muscle cells are targets for ZIKV, and myalgia and muscle disorders are frequently related symptoms during infection. We have previously demonstrated that myoblasts, the proliferating muscle stem cells essential for muscle repair, are permissive to ZIKV infection, generating infectious viral particles. In contrast, differentiated myotubes, derived from myoblast differentiation and fusion, control ZIKV replication. Nevertheless, lit

Naltrexone is prescribed off-label at low doses, typically 0.5-6.0 mg, for a variety of therapeutic indications. This review evaluates the clinical evidence for low-dose naltrexone (LDN). A literature search was conducted in February 2026 across PubMed, Embase and CINAHL for studies published from 1989 to 2026. Title and abstract searches for "low dose naltrexone" identified peer-reviewed English-language studies using doses of ≤ 12.5 mg in humans. A total of 105 studies were reviewed, including 15 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in chronic pain, autoimmune and neuroimmune disorders, gastr

Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) receptor 3 (TGFBR3), or betaglycan, is a transmembrane proteoglycan that serves as a coreceptor for TGF-β ligands, modulating TGF-β signaling in a context-dependent manner. Its extracellular domain can undergo proteolytic cleavage, yielding a 120 kDa soluble isoform (soluble transforming growth factor beta receptor 3 (sTGFBR3)) that antagonizes TGF-β signaling by sequestering ligands. Through this dual role, TGFBR3 exerts profound influence over various physiological and pathological processes, including cell survival, stemness, differentiation, cancer m

Giardia is a protozoan parasite of the small intestine, and a leading cause of diarrhoeal disease worldwide in a variety of animals, including humans. The host-parasite interaction and pathophysiological processes of giardiasis remain incompletely understood. Current research suggests that Giardia-induced diarrhoeal disease is mediated by small intestinal malabsorption and maldigestion, chloride hypersecretion and increased rates of small intestinal transit. Small intestinal malabsorption and maldigestion results from the CD8+ lymphocyte-induced diffuse shortening of brush border microvilli. A

OBJECTIVE: Skin disorders constitute a significant proportion of consultations in children's clinics; however, there is a paucity of data on the prevalence of dermatological lesions in hospitalized children in Nigeria. This study determines the prevalence of dermatological lesions in hospitalized children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 402 children aged three months to twelve years admitted in the Pediatric wards of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, were enrolled over a six-month period. Examination of the skin and its appendages was done for each patient. Data

BACKGROUND: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) may occur following acute gastroenteritis. This long-term complication has previously not been described after infection with the non-invasive protozoan Giardia lamblia. This study aims to characterize persistent abdominal symptoms elicited by Giardia infection according to Rome II criteria and symptoms scores.
METHODS: Structured interview and questionnaires 12-30 months after the onset of Giardia infection, and at least 6 months after Giardia eradication, among 82 patients with persisting abdominal symptoms elicited by the Giardia inf

A syndrome of stunting and leg weakness could be reproduced experimentally by inoculation of 1-day-old broilers with homogenised intestines from affected birds. Inoculated birds kept in isolators showed highly impaired growth until 3 weeks p.i. Birds produced mucoid yellowish coloured droppings and at post mortem thin liquid intestinal contents were found. Biochemical examination of blood plasma showed low plasma carotenoid concentrations and an increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, mainly caused by one isoenzyme, which was most likely of intestinal origin. These findings implicate in

Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is an entrapment neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) that is typically caused by mechanical compression. Piriformis syndrome (PS) is an uncommon neuromuscular disorder resulting from sciatic nerve compression or irritation by the piriformis muscle. The concurrent occurrence of MP and PS is rare and may pose significant diagnostic challenges because of overlapping sensory and radicular-like symptoms. We report the case of a 30-year-old previously healthy man who developed bilateral burning pain over the anterolateral thighs and right gluteal disco

INTRODUCTION: Survivors of critical illness are at high risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but administration of glucocorticoids during the illness can lower that risk. The mechanism is not known but may involve glucocorticoid modulation of hippocampal- and amygdala-dependent memory formation. In this study, we sought to determine whether glucocorticoids given during an acute illness influence the formation and persistence of fear and non-fear memories from the time of the illness.
METHODS: We performed cecal ligation and puncture in male and female mice to induce an acu
