BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of erbium:YAG laser-assisted cataract removal.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 15 patients underwent cataractous lens removal. All the patients had a visual acuity of 20/50 or worse secondary to senile cataract. The endothelial cell count was calculated preoperatively and at 6 weeks postoperatively. A 2.94-micron-wavelength erbium: YAG laser with a zirconium-fluoride fiber optic and silica tip was used to fracture and emulsify the nucleus. The erbium:YAG laser was chosen due to its high absorption in water, a primary component of a

INTRODUCTION: The optical coherence tomography (OCT) exploration of the retina has become almost routine and its semiology is well known. In contrast, the OCT exploration of the anterior segment is still in its preliminary stages.
CASE REPORT: We report the clinical aspects and the OCT Visante((R)) imaging of the anterior segment in a 35-year-old patient, victim of a penetrating injury of the left eye who required several operations including iterative vitrectomy for recurrent retinal detachment caused by proliferative vitreoretinopathy, use of high-density silicone oil, cataract surgery with

BACKGROUND: Neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy is a well-accepted, safe, and effective measure in the treatment of posterior capsule opacification. However, iatrogenic intraocular lens damage is a relatively common side effect that happens due to inappropriate focusing during the procedure. This experimental study analyzes the impact of YAG-pits to obtain qualitative information.
METHODS: Acrylic, monofocal hydrophilic and hydrophobic intraocular lenses (IOLs) with 6.0 mm optic and the with the same power (21D) were studied. First, all measurements were done with unm

INTRODUCTION: In comparison with the frequently used modified Kocher approach, the extensor digitorum communis (EDC) splitting approach allows improved access to the anterior half of the radial head, which is most commonly fractured, while reducing the risk of iatrogenic injury to the lateral collateral ligament.
STEP 1 MAKE THE INCISION MODIFIED KOCHER APPROACH: Make an oblique 7-cm lateral incision beginning at the proximal edge of the lateral epicondyle and extending distally over the center of the radial head toward the posterior ulnar border of the extensor carpi ulnaris muscle belly.

Phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is the international standard operation procedure for cataract and has been generalized worldwide. However, lens capsule opacification, one of the common complications after cataract surgery, impacts the recovery of patients' visual function to a large extent. Lens capsule opacification has two types, anterior capsule opacification (ACO) and posterior capsule opacification (PCO), according to the location. There is not an accepted approach to treat ACO. Nd : YAG laser capsulotomy, the common treatment of PCO, can effectively

Background. Local plexiform neurofibroma can lead to deformity of the pelvis, valgus deformity of femoral neck, and joint capsule laxity. We report a case of secondary hip osteoarthritis with subluxation and coxa vara deformity resulting from an extra-articular neurofibroma treated with total hip replacement. Case Description. A 39-year-old man had a large benign plexiform neurofibroma at buttock which induced secondary osteoarthritis of the hip. Conservative treatment of tumor was selected because the patient had low chance of malignant transformation due to absence of other neurofibromatosis

This study reports two cases of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease recurrence after laser treatment. Case 1 involved a woman in her late 70s with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease that was controlled by adalimumab and steroid eye solution therapy. She presented with uveitis recurrence 4 weeks after undergoing neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laser posterior capsulotomy in both eyes. She was immediately treated with sub-Tenon triamcinolone acetonide injection in both eyes, which provided palliative relief. During the following year, she experienced further recurrences every 3-5 months. Case 2 involved a …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes the evidence on the effect of intraocular lens (IOL) material on the outcomes of cataract surgery, as well as on the surgical procedure itself.
RECENT FINDINGS: Differences in capsular biocompatibility between IOL materials lead to variations in capsular stability and posterior capsule opacification (PCO), while differences in uveal biocompatibility affect postoperative inflammatory response.
SUMMARY: Refractive outcomes are affected by both incision size and the rotational stability of toric IOLs. Small incision sizes favour hydrophilic IOLs. Rotati

We report the self-limited nature of corneal opacification after accidental injection of Healon5 into the corneal stroma. A 52-year-old male with a new diagnosis of severe stage, primary open-angle glaucoma underwent successful trabeculectomy OS, which was complicated by ocular hypotony and shallow anterior chamber (AC) on postoperative day 1. Healon5, a hyaluronic acid-containing viscoelastic device, was accidentally introduced into the corneal stroma during attempted injection into the AC. The cornea hydrodissected and opacified, leading to precipitous loss of best-corrected visual acuity (B

Fixed knee flexion deformity can present as an insidious and significant problem in diverse etiologies, most commonly in cerebral palsy. Traditional surgical intervention has included posterior capsulotomy and supracondylar femoral osteotomy, both of which carry significant associated morbidity and risks. In the skeletally immature patient, guided growth may be used to correct or substantially diminish the deformity. We are presenting our early experience encompassing four subjects who completed instrumented gait analysis both prior to and after distal femoral anterior guided growth (hemiepiph…

We proposed the hypothesis that pseudophakic inflammation, including the fibrin reaction, may be caused by cytokines and/or prostaglandins, synthesized by residual lens epithelial cells (LEC). To test our hypothesis, we measured IL-1 alpha, TNF-alpha, IL-6 and EGF in the culture media of human LEC, obtained by capsulotomy during cataract surgery, by ELISA. IL-1 alpha was detected in one of the two pools of 2-week cultures (20.7 pg/10(5) cells), in two of the three pools of 3-week cultures (12.0 pg/10(5) cells and 13.9 pg/10(5) cells), and in one pool of 4-week cultures (11.1 pg/10(5) cells). Current laser treatments are quick, relatively painless, and well tolerated. Some ophthalmic techniques can be performed only by laser while others have a lower morbidity than alternative treatments. Peripheral retinal photocoagulation and focal photocoagulation now offer greatly improved visual prognosis for diabetic patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy or diabetic macular disease. Selected cases of macular degeneration may be treated by focal laser photocoagulation. The role of lasers in treating sub-retinal neovascular membranes is limited by the extent and location of the membr
