Estrogen replacement therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

In postmenopausal women, inevitable longitudinal loss of bone mass is increased in association with reduced levels of endogenous estrogen. A review of the health-care literature on therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis provides strong evidence for prevention and treatment with estrogen/progestogen replacement therapy. This therapy was not associated with endometrial carcinoma.

The effects of exercise on the bones of postmenopausal women.

The effects of walking and aerobic dancing on the bones of 73 recently postmenopausal women have been compared by photon absorptiometry of the distal radius with a control group who did not exercise. The period of observation was six months. Results showed that the control group and the walking group lost statistically significant amounts of bone mineral content (1.6%, and 1.7% respectively), but that the dancing group did not (0.8%). The control group did not show a significant increase in the bone width (0.9%), but both the dancing (1.3%) and walking (1.6%) groups did. Changes in the cross-s

Mast-cell proliferation in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Because mast cell proliferation has been reported in disorders of abnormal bone remodeling, we quantitated the number of mast cells in undecalcified section of iliac crest bone from 16 untreated women with postmenopausal osteoporosis and contrasted the findings to values from 10 normal women and 12 normal men. The mean number of marrow mast cells was greater in normal women than men (1.17 vs 0.40 cells per mm2, P less than 0.05). Compared to the normal women, osteoporotic women had a greater number of mast cells in the marrow (3.38 vs 1.17 cells per mm2, P less than 0.01). However, there was n

Postmenopausal osteoporosis: prevention versus cure.

Vertebral and femoral neck fracture syndromes and their attendant morbidity still continue to plague the lives of many postmenopausal women. The osteopenia that characterizes the "vertebral collapse" or "hip fracture" syndromes results from the gradual and progressive loss of bone mass the begins early in the fourth decade of life in all individuals and proceeds at an accentuated rate in the female population. A unified hypothesis that effectively explains the pathogenesis of the fracture-prone osteopenia state is still nonexistent, although sedentary life styles, genetic predisposition, hormo

Postmenopausal osteoporosis: cause, prevention and treatment.

At this point, I think I should point out that it now seems possible that postmenopausal osteoporosis, like smallpox and poliomyelitis, can be eradicated. Although full replacement doses of oestrogen prevents progression of the disease in women who have already lost a great deal of bone, this is like locking the stable door after the horse is gone. Present evidence is that smaller doses will probably suffice to prevent loss of bone at the menopause: mestranol 20 microng (Aitken et al, 1973) or conjugated oestrogens USP 0.625 mg (Meema, Bunker and Meema, 1975). The minimal prophylactic osteotro

A Large Mature Teratoma in a Postmenopausal Women.

Mature cystic teratomas arise from three germ lines: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. They have a certain malignant potential, which is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. They occur very often in young women, but there are a significant number of postmenopausal cases where the risk of malignancy is greater. Symptoms may be nonspecific, but in the event of complications, an acute condition may develop, threatening the patient's life. Treatment depends on the risk of malignancy, age, and presence of complications. We present a case of a postmenopausal woman with a large mature teratoma of

Does the postmenopausal ovary still matter?

Ovaries may influence health long after their reproductive function ends.

Biomarkers for Biological Aging in Postmenopausal Women.

Biological aging describes the cumulative decline in physiologic function that can differ from chronological age. Menopause marks a reproductive transition that may influence biological aging through loss of estrogen, changes in body composition, chronic inflammation, and epigenetic regulation. These pathways may contribute to heterogeneity in cardiovascular, skeletal, cognitive, and functional outcomes among postmenopausal women. Researchers use composite indices and molecular measures, including phenotypic age and DNA methylation or epigenetic clocks, to quantify these processes. However, av
