AI-based prediction and classification of root caries using radiographic images.

BACKGROUND: Root surface caries, commonly known as root decay, is a common dental disorder that affects tooth roots. Like enamel-based tooth decay, root caries attack exposed root surfaces caused by gum recession or periodontal disease. Older persons with gum recession, tooth loss, or poor oral hygiene may be more likely to develop this disorder. Dental root caries must be diagnosed early to improve treatment and prevention. This research will examine radiographic image-based AI-based root caries prediction algorithms. METHODS: Saveetha Dental College supplied 200 root surface radiographs. An

The Epiphany of Post-COVID: A Watershed for Pediatric Dentistry.

UNLABELLED: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) has spread as a pandemic throughout the world, posing a serious public health threat. Dentists appear to have a higher risk of COVID-19 exposure amongst Healthcare workers. This danger is even more magnified in pediatric dentistry since infected children typically have an asymptomatic, mild, or severe clinical viral infection and so can considerably contribute to community-based COVID-19 transmission. These are unprecedented times that require unprecedented efforts with dynamic protocols to be adopted. It is very challenging, but also an amazing

The Role of Dental Providers in Preventing HPV-Related Diseases: A Systems Perspective.

Successfully educating dental providers and patients about the link between human papillomavirus (HPV) and oropharyngeal cancer requires coordinated efforts to increase HPV-related prevention practices. The aim of this study was to identify, using a systems perspective, the multi-level determinants related to how dental providers can promote HPV prevention in dental practices. Data for this qualitative study were collected in 2015-16 from focus groups with dentists (four focus groups, n=33), focus groups with dental hygienists (four focus groups, n=48), and in-depth interviews with dental opin

Nano-warfare in the oral cavity: antimicrobial strategies and mechanisms in nanodentistry.

The oral environment is a very complex, diverse ecological system consisting of microorganisms and host tissues. To maintain oral health, a balance between these two elements is vital. Recent advances in the development of nanotechnology provide dentists with many new ways to kill bacterial pathogens in dental settings. In particular, the emergence of "nanodentistry" represents a means of using engineered nanoscale materials and systems to effectively combat bacterial biofilm formation and the resultant infections associated with biofilms. This review article will provide an overview of nanowa

Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health status of socially vulnerable children and adolescents in Seville and to examine its associations with behavioral and sociodemographic determinants. We hypothesized that greater social vulnerability and suboptimal behaviors would be associated with higher caries experience. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 250 participants aged 2 to 17 years attending the Luis Séiquer Social Dentistry Foundation between January and March 2025. Clinical examinations followed the WHO Oral Health Surveys: Basi

Recommendations on Topical Fluoride Usage for Caries Management in East Asia.

Dental caries is a widespread oral health issue in Asia, affecting an estimated 30% to 90% of children and adults. Many caries cases remain untreated, resulting in pain and infection. In response, the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry (AAPD) emphasises comprehensive caries management and organised a fluoride workshop at the 15th International Conference of the AAPD in 2023. The AAPD invited a group of experts to form a fluoride working group to review existing literature and develop fluoride recommendations for stakeholders across Asian countries and regions. The working group assessed car…

CHARGE syndrome: genetic aspects and dental challenges, a review and case presentation.

BACKGROUND: CHARGE syndrome (CS) is a rare genetic condition (OMIM #214800). The condition has a variable phenotypic expression. Historically, the diagnosis of CHARGE syndrome was based on the presence of specific clinical criteria. The genetic aetiology of CS has since been elucidated and attributed to pathogenic variation in the CHD7 gene (OMIM 608892) at chromosome locus 8q12. CASE PRESENTATION: A South African female of mixed ancestry heritage, aged 4 years, was referred for dental assessment to the Faculty of Dentistry, University of the Western Cape, in 2018. She had a diagnosis of CHAR

How to manage the biological risk in a dental clinic: current and future perspectives.

Dental personnel (DP) may be exposed to pathogens during dental treatment, either through contact contaminated equipment, or with blood and respiratory secretion. On the other hand, health care professionals are constantly exposed to pathogens and opportunists in their work environment. Consequently, the dental healthcare environment is connected with the risk of exposure to biological agents both for patients and dental workers, and involves a wide number of microorganisms that can be present in biological matrices (gingival fluids, saliva, blood), contaminated and/or non-sanitized surfaces,

The role of biofilm in chronic laryngitis and in head and neck cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The importance of bacterial biofilm in the human body, both when associated in chronic infections and as the default mode of microbial growth in the normal flora, has been understood during the last two decades. The word biofilm has recently entered into clinical vocabulary especially in dentistry, and oral hygienists have begun to talk of oral or dental biofilm instead of oral plaque. Biofilm presence has been demonstrated widely in otorhinolaryngology, related to chronic infections of middle ear, paranasal sinuses and lymphoid tissue of adenoids and tonsils and to implante

Diagnosis and management of X-linked hypophosphatemia in dental practice: A scoping review.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a PHEX-related disorder causing elevated FGF23, chronic hypophosphatemia, and impaired skeletal and dental mineralization, leading to frequent endodontic abscess in clinically sound teeth due to intrinsic structural failure, periapical lesions and early tooth loss. To address the lack of standardized oral management, a comprehensive literature review was conducted using EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases (1988-2024), adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Based on this evidence, multidisciplinary recommendations were developed to provide diag
