Recent findings on subjective well-being and physical, psychiatric, and social comorbidities in individuals with schizophrenia: A literature review.

AIM: Care for people with schizophrenia is shifting the locus from long-stay mental hospitals to nonspecialized community-based settings. Knowledge on the care is not a sole property of psychiatric specialists. Community healthcare workers who do not specialize in psychiatry are recommended to learn more about schizophrenia. This review aimed to summarize recent findings on subjective well-being and physical, psychiatric, and social comorbidities in individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: A literature review was conducted. We retrieved findings from existing systematic reviews and meta-analy

Prevalence of QT-Prolonging Drug-Drug Interactions in Psychiatry: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis.

Background: Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) are considered an emerging threat to the patients if undetected. DDIs can prolong QT interval, leading to fatal ventricular arrhythmia. Antipsychotics and antidepressants prescribed commonly to psychiatric patients have the propensity to prolong QT interval and can precipitate Torsades de pointes (TdP). This review aimed to summarize the prevalence of QT interval prolonging DDIs in psychiatric patients. Methods: This meta-analysis was carried out following the MOOSE (Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) statement. Databases like Pubm

Differential psychological response to the COVID-19 pandemic in psychiatric inpatients compared to a non-clinical population from Germany.

The COVID-19 pandemic is an inherently stressful situation, which may lead to adverse psychosocial outcomes in various populations. Yet, individuals may not be affected equally by stressors posed by the pandemic and those with pre-existing mental disorders could be particularly vulnerable. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the psychological response to the pandemic in a case-control design. We used an age-, sex- and employment status-matched case-control sample (n = 216) of psychiatric inpatients, recruited from the LMU Psychiatry Biobank Munich study and non-clinical individuals from the g

Index depressive episode and antidepressant exposure were associated with illness characteristics of pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) is a serious, recurrent disorder leading to severe functional impairment. As a first mood episode, index episode could affect the long-term course of the illness. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of youth with PBD from our multicenter, nationwide, naturalistic follow-up samples and to identify (i) the effects of index mood episode and (ii) the effect of previous antidepressant treatments on the age at mania onset of PBD. METHOD: The study sample consisted of 271 youth with BD-I followed by the child and adolescent psychia

Lifestyle Interventions in the Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Lifestyle medicine is increasingly important in psychiatry for its efficacy as a transdiagnostic treatment, its preventative potential, and its increased tolerability compared with first-line strategies. Although the impact of lifestyle medicine is strong across many psychiatric illnesses, our understanding of the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions in treating obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) is minimal. We aimed to conduct a systematic review examining the effect of lifestyle interventions (targeting diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and tobacco/alco

The Michigan infant mental health home visiting model.

Selma Fraiberg's pioneering work with infants, toddlers, and families over 40 years ago led to the development of a field in which professionals from multiple disciplines learned to work with or on behalf of infants, very young children, their parents, and the relationships that bind them together. The intent was to promote social and emotional health through enhancing the security of early developing parent-child relationships in the first years of life (Fraiberg, 2018). Called infant mental health (IMH), practitioners from fields of health, education, social work, psychology, human developme

Family-Based Psychological Treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Children and Adolescents: A Meta-analysis and Systematic Review.

A significant number of children and adolescents with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) demonstrate poor response to the current gold standard treatment, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP). Recent findings suggest that family variables affect treatment response highlighting the need for a meta-analytic review of the precise impact of family variables on OCD-related symptoms and processes. The current review and meta-analysis examined the effect of family-based interventions on OCD symptom and family factor outcomes for children and adolescents with

The effects of antipsychotic switching on diabetes in chronic schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness have a 20-year life-expectancy shortfall. The majority of antipsychotic medications are associated with obesity and heightened diabetes risk. People with severe mental illness less frequently achieve benchmarked diabetes care, often attributed to poor adherence, lower clinical attendance and documented medical biases in treatment. This case is presented to highlight the profound effect medication change can have on diabetes control. CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old man with a 42-year history of schizophrenia had required clozapine treatment for the prec

Dyspnea on exertion in patients of heart failure as a consequence of obesity: An observational study.

Heart failure (HF) is the inability of the heart to fill with or pump out enough blood to meet the body's needs. It is not one single disease, but rather a group of signs and symptoms caused by many different disease processes that have weakened the heart over time and left it unable to pump blood efficiently. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disorders are few of such disease processes responsible for conditions in HF. Even though, the co-morbidities mentioned above are well-established in the present system of medicine, its association with respiratory risk on obese patients es

Stereotypies and other abnormal repetitive behaviors: potential impact on validity, reliability, and replicability of scientific outcomes.

Normal behavior plays a key role in facilitating homeostasis, especially by allowing the animal to control and modify its environment. Captive environments may interfere with these behavioral responses, and the resulting stress may alter many physiological parameters. Abnormal behaviors indicate that an animal is unable to adjust behaviorally to the captive environment and, hence, may be expressing abnormal physiology. Therefore, captive environments may affect the following aspects of an experiment: validity, by introducing abnormal animals into experiments; reliability, by increasing interin

Medication and symptom management education program for the rehabilitation of psychiatric patients in Korea: the effects of promoting schedule on self-efficacy theory.

An effective rehabilitation program was developed for psychiatric patients' self-management of medication and symptoms. The rehabilitation program was designed to allow the patients to understand their illness, cope with their medical regimen, and prevent a relapse by recognizing any of the symptoms when they recur. This study consisted of three phases. The first phase was to explore the extent and the specific mental health needs of psychiatric patients. Data was obtained from 82 subjects who had symptoms of a mental illness including schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, and delusional disorder.

Development of a music group psychotherapy intervention for the primary prevention of adjustment difficulties in Korean adolescent girls.

PROBLEM: Traditionally, adolescent mental health in Korea has not been a prime focus for educators, health workers, and politicians, yet a majority of sampled adolescents report interpersonal sensitivity (Kim, 2003). METHOD: Thirty-five adolescent girls took part in a six-session school-based music group psychotherapy pilot intervention designed to promote relationships and improve self-control skills. FINDING: Participants identified several outcome benefits that may serve as protective factors in their continued social and emotional development. CONCLUSIONS: Music is a medium that promote

Biosocial bases of aggressive and violent behavior--implications for nursing studies.

Although aggression and violence have been increasingly viewed as a major public health problem with a biological and health basis, it has been under-researched in the nursing and health context. This paper reviews early biological risk factors for violence. These factors include pregnancy/birth complications, fetal exposure to nicotine, alcohol, and drugs, low cholesterol, malnutrition, lead and manganese exposure, head injuries and brain dysfunction, low arousal, low serotonin, low cortisol, and high testosterone. A biopsychosocial violence mode is proposed. Finally, the paper argues that nu

Focus Group Study of Medical Stakeholders to Inform the Development of Resilient Together for Dementia: Protocol for a Postdiagnosis Live Video Dyadic Resiliency Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) are increasingly common conditions that disrupt the lives of persons living with dementia and their spousal care partners. At the time of ADRD diagnoses, many couples experience challenges that produce emotional distress and relationship strain. At present, there are no interventions to address these challenges early after diagnoses to promote positive adjustment. OBJECTIVE: The study protocol described here is part of the first phase of a larger program of research that aims to develop, adapt, and establish the feasibility of Resilie

Acute sleep deprivation exacerbates systemic inflammation and psychiatry disorders through gut microbiota dysbiosis and disruption of circadian rhythms.

Acute sleep deprivation (ASD) is often observed in shift workers and characterized by drowsiness and unrelenting exhaustion. The physiological and psychological effects of ASD include anxiety, depression, cognitive impairment, systemic inflammation, stress responses, and disruptions of gut microbiota. However, the mechanisms involved in the ASD-associated circadian dysregulations with regard to gut dysbiosis, systemic inflammation, physiological modulation, and psychiatry disorders remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether central nervous system disorders induced by ASD

Mental health crises among youth in the context of migration - a cross-sectional study of psychiatric emergencies.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents face various challenges that can negatively affect their mental health. Unmanaged stress may lead to mental health crises. Adolescents with a migration background may face additional challenges, making them especially vulnerable and at increased risk for mental health disorders. As migrant adolescents represent a considerable proportion of the adolescent population worldwide, including in Germany, it is crucial to ensure accessible and appropriate mental health care in order to prevent mental health crises in adolescent migrants. It is thus essential to identify specifi

On the research on youth mental health: A scientometric analysis across mental disorders.

In youth-i.e., adolescents and young adults-mental disorders represent a major burden on well-being and quality of life. This scientometric study aimed to map research trends concerning any mental disorder in youth. We searched the Web of Science Core Collection for studies published between 01/01/1985 and 28/08/2025, using keywords on mental disorders and youth. Co-citation reference networks were extracted. R-bibliometrix/CiteSpace were used. 65,684 studies were included, forming a well-structured co-reference network. A trend in the 1980s concerned the prevalence/outcomes of specific mental
