Is sensory over-responsivity distinguishable from childhood behavior problems? A phenotypic and genetic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although impaired sensory processing accompanies various clinical conditions, the question of its status as an independent disorder remains open. Our goal was to delineate the comorbidity (or lack thereof) between childhood psychopathology and sensory over-responsivity (SOR) in middle childhood using phenotypic and behavior-genetic analyses. METHOD: Participants (N = 970) were drawn from the Wisconsin Twin Project, a population-based sample of twins and their families. Mothers completed a sensory responsivity checklist when their offspring were on average 7 years old, followed by

Quality of life, behavioral problems, and marital adjustment in the first year after radical prostatectomy.

UNLABELLED: Patients submitted for prostatectomy were evaluated regarding their quality of life, behavioral problems, and marital adjustment. Thirty-two patients aged 54-76 years old were included. The results indicated that prostatectomy does not prevent normal psychological functioning, although there is a relationship between smoking and lower quality of life in these patients. INTRODUCTION: Different types of monotherapy for prostate cancer leads to impairment in urinary and sexual functions, but prostatectomy seems to have worse results in physical functioning when compared with other tr

Obstructive sleep apnea-specific quality of life and behavioral problems in children with syndromic craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at evaluating the impact of syndromic craniosynostosis on quality of life, assessing the association between the presence of craniosynostosis syndrome and prevalence of behavioral problems and assessing the impact of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in syndromic craniosynostosis compared with healthy controls. METHOD: A prospective study was carried out using the Obstructive Sleep Apnea-18 (OSA-18) survey and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) in 119 syndromic craniosynostosis patients and the OSA-18 survey in 459 controls. The craniosynostosis population underwent a pol

Parent-adolescent violence and later behavioral health problems among homeless and housed youth.

Parent-adolescent violence (i.e., violence between parents and adolescents) is an important pathway to homelessness and predicts poor behavioral health outcomes among youth. However, few studies have examined links between parent violence and outcomes among youth who are homeless. Existing research has also tended to ignore adolescent violence toward parents, despite evidence that mutual violence is common. The current study examines prospective links of parent-adolescent violence to outcomes among youth who were homeless and demographically matched youth, through two complementary substudies:

Substance use, mental health problems, and behavior at risk for HIV: evidence from CJDATS.

This study examined the relationships between substance abuse, mental health problems and HIV risk behavior in offenders discharged from prison and referred to substance abuse treatment programs. Data from 34 sites (n = 1,358) in a federally-funded cooperative agreement, the Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies (CJDATS), were analyzed. Among parolees referred to substance abuse treatment, self reports for the six-month period before the arrest resulting in their incarceration revealed frequent problems with both substance use and mental health. HIV risk behavior was operationalized as

Callous-unemotional behaviors in young girls: shared and unique effects relative to conduct problems.

Among girls, little is known about the shared and unique associations that callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors and conduct problems have with aspects of emotional and behavioral dysregulation and with parenting practices. This study examined these associations using a large community-based sample of young girls (N = 990). The findings revealed that hyperactivity-impulsivity and negative emotionality were positively and uniquely associated with conduct problems, but not with CU behaviors, after controlling for co-occurring conduct problems. Conduct problems were also positively associated with b

Language delay and behavioral/emotional problems in toddlers: findings from two developmental clinics.

PURPOSE: The association between language delay and behavior problems in toddlers was examined in 2 studies, 1 conducted in a developmental clinic in New Jersey (Study 1; N = 83) and the other conducted in a developmental clinic in New York (Study 2; N = 103). METHOD: In both clinics, parents of 18- to 35-month-olds completed the Language Development Survey (LDS) and the Child Behavior Checklist/1.5-5 (CBCL). In Study 2, the Preschool Language Scale-Fourth Edition (PLS-4) was also administered. Neurodevelopmental delay (ND) and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) symptoms were also assesse

Abusive parents' reports of child behavior problems: relationship to observed parent-child interactions.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the hypothesis that abusive parents' reports may exaggerate rates of child behavior problems in a clinical sample. METHOD: The association between parental ratings of behavior problems and independent observations of child behaviors was examined in a sample of 205 clinic-referred families, 58 of which had a reported history of physical abuse. RESULTS: Relative to the comparison group, parents in the abuse group reported more externalizing problems in their children after controlling for parental psychopathology, and displayed more emotionally controlling and less suppor

The relationship between manic symptoms on the DASH II and YMRS and feeding/mealtime behavior problems.

This study represents the first to assess whether a relationship between manic symptoms and feeding/mealtime behavior problems exists in individuals with ID. Participants were compared across three groups (manic, non-manic psychiatrically impaired, and controls) on the diagnostic assessment for the severely handicapped-revised (DASH-II) and young mania rating scale (YMRS) and items of the screening tool of feeding problems (STEP). Individuals in the manic group exhibited clinically significant symptoms of mania (n=18), those in the non-manic psychiatrically impaired group exhibited symptoms of

Substance abuse treatment and risk behaviors among HIV-infected persons with alcohol problems.

We examined the association of substance abuse treatment with sexual and drug use risk behaviors among 349 HIV-infected persons with a history of alcohol problems using a standardized questionnaire regarding sexual and drug use risk behaviors, demographics, substance use, and use of substance abuse treatment. We defined substance abuse treatment services as any of the following in the past 6 months: 12 weeks in a half-way house or residential facility; 12 visits to a substance abuse counselor or mental health professional; day treatment for at least 30 days; or participation in any methadone m

Depression, partnership, social support, and parenting: interaction of maternal factors with behavioral problems of the child.

BACKGROUND: Children of depressed mothers are at elevated risk to develop behavioral problems. Besides maternal depression, other risk factors like interpersonal functioning, are discussed. The object of this study was to investigate the predictive value of the maternal variables depression, partnership, social support, and parenting for internal and external behavioral problems of the children. METHODS: A total of 100 mothers and their children who participated in a German mother-child rehabilitation program were interviewed by questionnaire. Structural equation modeling was conducted in ord

An evaluation of relations among antisocial behavior, psychopathic traits, and alcohol problems in incarcerated men.

BACKGROUND: The association between antisocial behavior and alcohol problems is well established, but the role that psychopathic traits and other factors such as drinking patterns and motives and family history play in this relationship has not been subjected to much empirical scrutiny. METHODS: A large sample (n=329) of male Federal Correctional Institution inmates participated in structured interviews designed to permit diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder and to assess facets of psychopathic personality as defined by the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised. Prisoners also completed

Relationships of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse to emotional and behavioral problems among incarcerated adolescents.

This study examined the relationships of sexual, physical and emotional abuse to emotional (internalizing) and behavioral (externalizing) problems among incarcerated girls and boys. Participants were youth who were remanded to the correctional facilities within a statewide juvenile correctional system in a southern state in the United States of America. Each participant completed a structured interview regarding abuse history, emotional and behavioral difficulties, and demographic characteristics. Multiple regression analyses indicated that girls were more likely than boys to internalize their

Contribution of maternal smoking during pregnancy and lead exposure to early child behavior problems.

Maternal smoking during pregnancy elevates risk for later child behavior problems. Because prior studies considered only Western settings, where smoking co-occurs with social disadvantage, we examined this association in Yugoslavia, a different cultural setting. Mothers enrolled in pregnancy as the low-exposure group in a prospective study of lead exposure were interviewed about health, including smoking history. A total of 199 children were assessed on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) at ages 4, 4 1/2, and 5 years. Average cumulative blood lead (BPb) was determined from serial samples take

Social phobia viewed as a problem in social functioning: a pilot study of group behavioral treatment.

Available treatments of social phobia reduce anxiety and avoidance of social situations. Social functioning however, remains relatively unaffected. This study piloted a behavioral group treatment that aimed at improving patients' individual difficulties in social functioning. Five patients fulfilling DSM-IV criteria for social phobia were selected for treatment by a 16-session behavioral group treatment focusing on improving interpersonal functioning both in specific phobic situations as well as in different spheres of social life in general. Four out of 5 patients completed treatment and show

The effect of sex hormone replacement therapy on behavior problems and moods in adolescents with delayed puberty.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this clinical study was to determine the effects of sex steroids on behavior and mood in adolescents with hypogonadism. STUDY DESIGN: The experimental design consisted of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial lasting for 21 months. The study group consisted of 39 boys and 16 girls recruited from a pediatric endocrine clinic for delayed puberty. Depo-testosterone (to boys) or conjugated estrogens (to girls) was administered in 3-month blocks, alternating with placebo, at 3 dose levels approximating early, middle, and late pubertal amounts.

Relationship between cigarette smoking and health risk and problem behaviors among US adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether sociodemographic factors and health risk and problem behaviors explain the prevalence of cigarette smoking among US adolescents. DESIGN: Probability survey. PARTICIPANTS: A nationally representative sample of US adolescents. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Weighted prevalence, adjusted odds ratio (OR), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for current smoking status by health risk and problem behaviors. RESULTS: The prevalence of smoking was highest among adolescents who were white, older, and who had a high school education or lived in the Northeast. When we adjusted for

Maternal factors related to parenting practices, developmental expectations, and perceptions of child behavior problems.

Parenting practices of a representative sample of 1,056 urban mothers with very young children were studied via the Parent Behavior Checklist (Fox, 1994) and the Behavior Screening Questionnaire (Richman & Graham, 1971). Potential determinants of parenting practices were also addressed, including maternal age, marital status, education level, number of children living at home, and family socioeconomic status. Less positive parenting practices concerning nuturing and discipline were found among mothers who were younger, had more than one child living at home, were single, had a lower income lev

Externalizing behavior problems and academic underachievement in childhood and adolescence: causal relationships and underlying mechanisms.

Conceptual and measurement issues surrounding externalizing behavior problems and academic underachievement, the strength and specificity of the covariation between these domains, and the viability of explanatory models that link these areas are reviewed. In childhood, inattention and hyperactivity are stronger correlates of academic problems than is aggression; by adolescence, however, antisocial behavior and delinquency are clearly associated with underachievement. Whereas investigations with designs that allow accurate causal inference are scarce, unidirectional paths from 1 domain to the o

Minor neurological dysfunction is more closely related to learning difficulties than to behavioral problems.

In a group of 570 nine-year-old children (315 boys and 255 girls) without an overtly handicapping neurological condition, relationships were studied between the presence of minor neurological dysfunction (MND) on the one hand and cognitive and behavioral problems on the other hand. The aim of the study was to investigate whether MND was more closely related to learning problems than to behavioral difficulties. The group was a subpopulation of the birth cohort of the Groningen Perinatal Project in the Netherlands, in which perinatal developmental relationships are studied. The age-specific and
