A Cross-Sectional comparison of proprioception, muscle strength, and athletic performance in adolescent athletes with and without dynamic balance deficits.

This cross-sectional study compared ankle proprioception, isometric hip and ankle muscle strength, and athletic performance between adolescent athletes with and without dynamic balance deficits. The study involved 80 adolescent athletes (40 boys and 40 girls), with 40 participants exhibiting dynamic balance deficits and 40 with normal dynamic balance, based on the Y-Balance test. Proprioception was evaluated through ankle dorsiflexion reconstruction, muscle strength was measured using a hand-held dynamometer, and athletic performance was assessed via the figure-of-eight hop test. The results r…

The Effect of Motor Imagery Ability on Function and Proprioception in Myoelectric Prosthesis Users: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Motor imagery ability (MIA) is a critical cognitive process that enables the mental simulation of movements, facilitating skill acquisition in the use of myoelectric prostheses and their effective control in individuals who have undergone amputation. Although MIA is essential, its impact on upper extremity function and proprioception in myoelectric prosthesis users remains insufficiently studied. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate MIA in individuals who have undergone transradial amputation and use myoelectric prostheses, compare it with a healthy control group, and examine it…

Does visual experience influence arm proprioception and its lateralization? Evidence from passive matching performance in congenitally-blind and sighted adults.

In humans, body segments' position and movement can be estimated from multiple senses such as vision and proprioception. It has been suggested that vision and proprioception can influence each other and that upper-limb proprioception is asymmetrical, with proprioception of the non-dominant arm being more accurate and/or precise than proprioception of the dominant arm. However, the mechanisms underlying the lateralization of proprioceptive perception are not yet understood. Here we tested the hypothesis that early visual experience influences the lateralization of arm proprioceptive perception …

Comparison of physical function, proprioception, muscle strength, postural balance, and walking in older women with and without total knee arthroplasty.

The benefit of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is that it alleviates pain caused by osteoarthritis; however, other postoperative effects on physical function are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the differences in physical function, proprioception, muscle strength, postural balance, and walking in older women with and without TKA. A total of 36 participants were included in this study; the TKA group comprised older women who underwent TKA (n = 18) and the non TKA group comprised older women who did not undergo TKA (n = 18). All the participants were evaluated for physical function, propr…

Proprioception: where are we now? A commentary on clinical assessment, changes across the life course, functional implications and future interventions.

Proprioception, the sense of where one is in space, is essential for effective interaction with the environment. A lack of or reduction in proprioceptive acuity has been directly correlated with falls and with reduced functional independence in older people. Proprioceptive losses have also been shown to negatively correlate with functional recovery post stroke and play a significant role in other conditions such as Parkinson's disease. However, despite its central importance to many geriatric syndromes, the clinical assessment of proprioception has remained remarkably static. We look at approa…

Natural antisense transcript Nat9a suppresses Scn9a (NaV1.7) expression in parvalbumin-positive proprioceptive and inhibitory neurons.

Natural antisense transcripts (NATs) are important spatial and temporal regulators of gene expression. We previously cloned a NAT (Nat9a) to Scn9a, which encodes the NaV1.7 voltage-gated sodium channel that is essential for pain perception. By studying a novel Nat9a global knockout mouse model, we demonstrate that the deletion of Nat9a does not affect pain sensitivity but instead partially impairs motor coordination. We show that Nat9a is expressed throughout the peripheral and central nervous systems and its expression is enriched, but not limited to, cells that express parvalbumin (Pvalb), w

Training the proprioceptive and propulsive function of the foot for improved technique and enhanced performance of the golf swing: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The proprioceptive and propulsive functions of the feet-despite their essential role in stability, movement initiation, and efficient bottom-up energy transfer along the kinetic chain-are largely overlooked in conventional golf physical and technical training. To address this gap, we developed a novel approach to golf athletic training and swing technique that embeds foot mechanics as a fundamental driver of performance enhancement. METHODS: Twenty-five experienced golf players completed three separate swing sessions: the first before a specific foot-proprioceptive intervention (t

Does Proprioceptive Impairment Affect Feedforward Motor Control? A Cross-Sectional Study on Patients With Brain Damage.

Sensory ataxia and cerebellar ataxia share common manifestations including dysmetria, intentional tremor and lack of smoothness. We formulated a theoretical framework to describe the patients' sensory and cerebellar ataxic behavior as consequences of a forward model impairment. To test this framework, the present study aimed to compare upper limb movement kinematics in an index-to-nose task between three groups: healthy controls, people with CNS focal lesions and cerebellar deficits and people with CNS focal lesions and somatosensory impairment. We recruited 12 healthy controls (age years, fem

Effects of Foam Rolling Prior to Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Stretching on Hamstring Flexibility and Thigh Skin Temperature.

CONTEXT: Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching (PNFS) is suggested to improve the range of motion and flexibility as an active warm-up. Recently, the foam rolling (FR) methods have also emerged as a passive warm-up. However, the combined effects of PNFS and FR are still unclear, and no reports have compared their effects using thermal imaging. This study investigated the acute effects of combining nonvibration FR (NVFR) and vibration FR (VFR) prior to PNFS, in comparison with PNFS alone, on hamstring flexibility and thigh skin temperature. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial.
