Electroplated double-crowns on implants and teeth after up to 12 years- a retrospective clinical study.

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the outcome of implant-supported or combined tooth-implant-supported prostheses retained by electroplated double-crowns after 1-12 years. METHODS: Twenty-five patients were retrospectively examined in a private dental practice in Hamburg, Germany. All had been rehabilitated with a removable prosthesis retained by electroplated double-crowns, for at least one year. Fifteen patients had implant-supported prostheses and 10 had combined tooth-implant-supported prostheses in the maxilla or the mandible. Biological and technical complications were recorded at th

Registration of localization, occlusion and occluding materials for failing screw joints in the Brånemark implant system.

This study is based on data from routine follow-up registration following functional loading of a consecutive number of osseointegrated prostheses at the Dental School, University of Oslo. Fifty-six patients with 240 Brånemark implants were examined 2-4 months after the implants were loaded, and a protocol form for collecting information about the status of the treatment was completed. The examinations included registration of oral hygiene, pathological alterations in soft and hard tissues, type of material used in contacting occlusal surfaces, occlusal design and technical and mechanical fail

Implant-supported rehabilitation of an edentate patient with osteogenesis imperfecta: a case report.

This is a review of the literature on osteogenesis imperfecta and a case report of an edentulous patient with osteogenesis imperfecta rehabilitated with implant-supported fixed prostheses in the maxilla and mandible. Quality and quantity of the bone is of paramount importance for establishment of osseointegration. In osteogenesis imperfecta bone is osteoporotic. There are few reported cases in the literature of implant placement and subsequent rehabilitation of patients with osteogenesis imperfecta. To our knowledge, this is the first reporting of successful short-term follow-up of an edentulo

Implantation of SphinKeeper(TM): a new artificial anal sphincter.

INTRODUCTION: A new artificial anal sphincter, SphinKeeper(TM), was devised with the aim to treat fecal incontinence (FI) by implanting specifically designed self-expandable prostheses into the intersphincteric space. Preliminary data concerning the procedure feasibility and prosthesis localization at 3 months are presented. METHODS: SphinKeeper(TM) prostheses in the native state are dehydrated, thin, solid cylinder (length 29 mm, diameter 3 mm), changing their state (shorter--length 23 mm, thicker--diameter 7 mm--and softer, with shape memory) within 48 h of contact with fluids. First and second branchial arch syndrome: aspects on the embryogenesis, elucidations, and rehabilitation using the osseointegration concept.

BACKGROUND: The osseointegration concept has dramatically changed the possibility of rehabilitating patients with craniofacial defects due to branchial arch syndromes. PURPOSE: This article describes some problems related to the investigative routines and rehabilitation of individuals with malformations of the first and second branchial arches of the craniofacial region. Animal model systems have increased the knowledge of basic embryonic processes that can explain the extent of the malformations. Though most clinical first and second branchial arch syndromes are likely to be caused by sporad

Computed tomographic imaging of stapes implants.

HYPOTHESIS: Computed tomographic (CT) imaging of stapes prostheses is inaccurate. BACKGROUND: Clinical situations arise in which it would be helpful to determine the depth of penetration of a stapes prosthesis into the vestibule. The accuracy of CT imaging for this purpose has not been defined. This study was aimed to determine the accuracy of CT imaging to predict the depth of intrusion of stapes prostheses into the vestibule. METHODS: The measurement of stapes prostheses by CT scan was compared with physical measurements in 8 cadaveric temporal bones. RESULTS: The depth of intrusion into

Comparative animal study of three ligament prostheses for the replacement of the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligament.

Three different ligament prostheses (Leeds-Keio, Gore-Tex and a prototype of Aramid) were implanted in sheep knee joints replacing the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament. After 1 yr the knees were explanted and their biomechanical properties were assessed by a drawer test and tensile tests of the implants. Additionally the ligament replacements, the synovial membrane and the lymph nodes were inspected histologically. For each type of prosthesis partial or total ruptures occurred. None of the operated joints regained normal stability and stiffness. Anterior knee stabi

Biocompatibility of silver containing silica films on Bioverit® II middle ear prostheses in rabbits.

For several centuries silver is known for its antibacterial effects. The middle ear is an interesting new scope for silver application since chronic inflammations combined with bacterial infection cause complete destruction of the fragile ossicle chain and tympanic membrane. The resulting conductive deafness requires tympanoplasty for reconstruction. Strategies to prevent bacterial growth on middle ear prostheses are highly recommended. In this study, rabbits were implanted with Bioverit® II middle ear prostheses functionalized with silver containing dense and nanoporous silica films which wer

The correlation of wear with histological features after failed hip resurfacing arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Tissue necrosis and a macrophage and perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate are commonly seen in periprosthetic tissues around metal-on-metal hip resurfacing implants, including pseudotumors associated with these implants. The purpose of the present study was to correlate pathological changes in periprosthetic tissues with clinical findings and the amount of implant-derived metal wear. METHODS: We analyzed morphological changes in the periprosthetic soft tissues around fifty-six failed metal-on-metal hip resurfacing implants. The most common reason for failure was the presence of a s

Implant Treatment for Severe 3-Dimensional Bone Defects in the Area of Missing Adjacent Maxillary Central and Lateral Incisors: Long-Term Follow-Up Using Titanium Mesh and GBR Techniques.

This report presents 2 cases of severe bone defects following the extraction of adjacent maxillary central and lateral incisors. In both cases, the teeth were extracted in the hospital's oral surgery department due to extensive apical periodontitis. Postoperatively, 3-dimensional bone defects were observed, including mesiodistal, labial, and palatal bone loss extending near the nasal floor. In the first case, 2 implants were placed using the guided bone regeneration (GBR) method with titanium mesh. Subsequently, during the second stage surgery, a minor GBR procedure was performed to improve th

Long-term results of implants treated with guided bone regeneration: a 5-year prospective study.

The aim of this prospective 5-year longitudinal study was to follow endosteal implants in which guided bone regeneration (GBR) was applied during implant placement. In 75 patients, defects around implants (Branemark System) were treated with Bio-Oss and Bio-Gide (112 implants). In split-mouth patients in this group, Bio-Oss and Gore-Tex were used in the second defect site (41 implants). All 75 patients had at least 1 implant that was entirely surrounded by bone and served as the control (112 implants). After placement of the definitive prostheses (single-tooth, fixed, or removable implant pros

Implant overdenture and Locator system in edentulous patient with severely resorbed mandible - a case report.

Clinical studies have revealed that the main objective of implants in the edentulous jaw is to provide support for fixed prostheses or to stabilize complete dentures. Various attachment systems were developed for universal use in partially and completely edentulous patients such as clasps, cone-shape telescope copings, magnets, bar systems, locators. The aim of this case report is to present the Locator attachment that does not use the splinting of implants. Four implants were placed in the foraminal region and the Locator attachment system was used to connect overdentures to mandibular dental

Occlusal considerations in implantology: good occlusal practice in implantology.

UNLABELLED: This article is concerned with implants that are being used for fixed crown and bridgework rather than removable prostheses. The huge increase in the provision of implants over the past two decades is set to continue. Most of the research is related to avoiding failures in implants. This research, in the main, has concentrated on the essential interface between the artificial implant and living bone: osseointegration. The other interface, which is worthy of our full attention, is the one between the implant-supported crown and the antagonist tooth: the occlusion. CLINICAL RELEVANC

Systemic Factors Affecting Prognosis in Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry: A Review.

The field of restorative and prosthetic dentistry focuses on restoring lost tooth structures and replacing missing teeth and lost tissue to restore or improve esthetics and oral health. Many systemic factors such as metabolic, bone, autoimmune, cardiovascular, and endocrine disorders can affect healing procedures, and bone density and impact oral health. Hence patients suffering from systemic disease when treated for prosthodontic rehabilitation can have negative prognostic outcomes. The commonest prosthodontic treatments that can be affected include dental implants, fixed prostheses, and remo

Incidence and Classification of Chest Wall Deformities in Breast Augmentation Patients.

Although chest wall deformities (CWDs) are seen four times more often in males than in females, most patients who consult plastic surgery clinics in our country are females. Breast augmentation and augmentation mastopexy were performed with a total of 812 breast implants in 406 patients. Forty-three of these patients had various CWDs. The CWD patient ages ranged from 18 to 43 years. Patients were observed for 6 months to 8 years (mean of approximately 3 years). Pectus excavatum (PE) was present in 22 patients, pectus carinatum (PC) in five patients, Poland syndrome (PS) in two patients, sunken
