Adolescents in a therapeutic community: treatment implications for teen survivors of traumatic experiences.

This article describes an adolescent with a history of severe traumatic experiences and treatment in a residential program for chemically dependent, severely emotionally disturbed youths between the ages of 12 and 18. It begins with a description of the long-term treatment program, the types of clients admitted, and the treatment activities provided. Basic findings from an outcome study conducted within the program made predictions regarding the length of time of residential treatment for drug addicted, severely emotionally disturbed adolescents regardless of trauma history. Pretreatment psych

Dysphoria Dimensions: a Preliminary Inpatients Study to Diffrentiate Borderline Personality and Bipolar Disorder Spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) from Bipolar Disorder (BD) represents a very difficult challenge for clinicians. Dysphoria could be a possible key to differentiate these disorders. We currently define dysphoria as a complex and disorganized emotional state with proteiform phenomenology, characterized by a multitude of symptoms. Among them irritability, discontent, interpersonal resentment and surrender prevail. These dimensions can be detected using the Neapen Dysphoria Scale - Italian version (NDS-I). Dysphoria role in BPD has been highlighted by the recent t

Incidence and Risk Factors for Non-AIDS Comorbidities After COVID-19 in People Living With HIV in Atlanta, Georgia.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection rates disproportionately affect persons with underlying health conditions. People living with HIV (PLWH) acquire COVID at a higher rate than those without HIV and may be at risk for developing incident comorbidities after acute infection. Risk factors for, and incidence of, post-COVID non-AIDS comorbidities (NACM) in PLWH remain unknown. SETTING: We assessed incidence of and risk factors for post-COVID NACM among PLWH using data from the Emory Center for AIDS Research Registry between March 1, 2020, and September 30, 2022. We assessed

Antioxidative role of palm grass rhizome ameliorates anxiety and depression in experimental rodents and computer-aided model.

Palm grass (Curculigo recurvata) is an ethnomedicinally important herb reported to have significant medicinal values. The present study aimed to evaluate the antidepressant and anxiolytic activities of a methanol extract of C. recurvata rhizome (Me-RCR) through different approaches. The antidepressant and anxiolytic properties of Me-RCR were assessed by using elevated plus maze (EPM), hole-board (HBT), tail suspension (TST), and forced swimming (FST) tests in Swiss Albino mice. The in-depth antioxidative potential of Me-RCR was also evaluated through DPPH radical scavenging activity, ferric-re

Anxious and avoidant attachment styles and indicators of recovery in schizophrenia: associations with self-esteem and hope.

OBJECTIVES: Having an insecure attachment style in schizophrenia has been linked to treatment response and symptom severity in schizophrenia. This study sought to further examine whether attachment style is related to subjective indicators of recovery including hope and self-esteem, independent of symptom level and secondly, whether attachment style in schizophrenia differs from attachment style of persons facing adversity in the form of a prolonged non-psychiatric medical illness. DESIGN: Participants were 52 men with schizophrenia, and 26 with HIV/AIDS who had no history of experiencing sev

[HIV infection associated cognitive disorders].

The most frequent neuropsychiatric complication of the human immunodefienciency virus infection is cognitive impairment, wich may range in severity from a mild cognitive disorder to a severe dementing illness. HIV-associated dementia is known to be a poor indicator in patients with HIV. Caring for a person who develops cognitive impairment or even stable dementia is exhausting emotionally, psysically and financially. The most important difference between HIV-associated dementia and HIV associated minor cognitive disorder is the severity of impairment in activities of daily living. The purpose

Magnetic resonance abnormalities in HIV infection: a study in the drug-user risk group.

Cognitive impairment is a frequent complication of advanced human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infection. However, structural imaging of the brain has not revealed abnormalities that precede the onset of clinical abnormalities. Cranial magnetic resonance (MR) studies were performed in 28 male subjects with intravenous drug use histories; nine were HIV-1 seronegative, 11 were HIV-1 seropositive but asymptomatic, and eight were seropositive and met symptomatic criteria for acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Cortical atrophy, but not the degree of ventricular enlargement or signal ab

Allergic Diseases and Mental Health.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms have long been acknowledged as a common comorbidity for individuals with allergic diseases. The proposed mechanisms for this relationship vary by disease and patient population and may include neuroinflammation and/or the consequent social implications of disease symptoms and management. We review connections between mental health and allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, vocal cord dysfunction, urticaria, and food allergy. Many uncertainties remain and warrant further research, particularly with regard to how medications interact with pathophysiologic mechani

Computer-aided analysis of radiological images for cancer diagnosis: performance analysis on benchmark datasets, challenges, and directions.

Radiological image analysis using machine learning has been extensively applied to enhance biopsy diagnosis accuracy and assist radiologists with precise cures. With improvements in the medical industry and its technology, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been essential in detecting early cancer signs in patients that could not be observed physically, exclusive of introducing errors. CAD is a detection system that combines artificially intelligent techniques with image processing applications thru computer vision. Several manual procedures are reported in state of the art for cancer

Recent approaches on Huntington's disease (Review).

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by severe motor, cognitive and psychiatric symptoms. Patients of all ages can present with a dysfunction of the nervous system, which leads to the progressive loss of movement control and disabilities in speech, swallowing, communications, etc. The molecular basis of the disease is well-known, as HD is related to a mutated gene, a trinucleotide expansion, which encodes to the huntingtin protein. This protein is linked to neurogenesis and the loss of its function leads to neurodegenerative disorders. Although the genetic ca

Giving a Voice to Gambling Addiction: Analysis of Personal Narratives.

Gambling addiction (GA) is now considered a worldwide health issue. Although the topic of disorder awareness is a central issue in clinical practice, there are few studies examining this dimension in relation to GA. To bridge this gap, we conducted a qualitative study, administering interviews focused on awareness of GA and eliciting narratives of both the disorder and the whole life of participants. We adopted both qualitative and quantitative methods of research, using computer-aided content analysis. We administered to a sample of 15 treatment-seeking gamblers the Psychiatric Interview for

Neurotherapeutic Interventions for Psychiatric Illness.

Many patients with mental illness do not respond to common evidence-based treatments such as psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. We increasingly understand these illnesses as disorders of brain circuits, suggesting that otherwise treatment-refractory patients might be helped by direct intervention in those circuits. Non-invasive techniques for circuit intervention include electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Circuits can also be targeted more directly and focally through neurosurgical intervention, including through vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), abla

A preliminary investigation of the relationship between dispositional mindfulness and eating disorder symptoms among men in residential substance use treatment.

The comorbidity between eating disorders (EDs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) is of particular concern given the high rates of mortality, relapse and poor treatment outcomes associated with both disorders. As a result, there has been a growing impetus within the field to elucidate factors that might influence and aid treatment for this comorbidity. One such factor is dispositional mindfulness, as past literature has demonstrated a significant relationship between mindfulness and both EDs and SUDs. However, we are unaware of any research that has examined the relationship between dispositio

Common Questions About Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a disruptive behavior disorder characterized by a pattern of angry or irritable mood, argumentative or defiant behavior, or vindictiveness lasting for at least six months. Children and adolescents with ODD may have trouble controlling their temper and are often disobedient and defiant toward others. There are no tools specifically designed for diagnosing ODD, but multiple questionnaires can aid in diagnosis while assessing for other psychiatric conditions. ODD is often comorbid with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, and mood diso
