Social Contact, Social Distancing, and Attitudes Toward LGT Individuals: A Cross-Cultural Study of College Students in the United States, Italy, and Spain.

More than any other time in modern history, today people are significantly more likely to know (or be) lesbian, gay, and transgender (LGT) people; however, prejudices directed toward these groups remain. In the current study, we explore how social contact and social distancing/desired social contact are related to LGT prejudices using Worthen's (2012) Attitudes Toward LGT People Scales and data from four heterosexual college student samples in Oklahoma, Texas, Italy, and Spain (N = 1,217). In doing so, we provide the first-ever study to explore Allport's (1954) contact hypothesis as it relates

Opening minds in Canada: targeting change.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the ongoing activities of the Opening Minds (OM) Anti-Stigma Initiative of the Mental Health Commission of Canada regarding the 4 groups targeted (youth, health care providers, media, and workplaces), highlight some of the key methodological challenges, and review lessons learned. METHOD: The approach used by OM is rooted in community development philosophy, with clearly defined target groups, contact-based education as the central organizing element across interventions, and a strong evaluative component so that best practices can be identified, replicated, and dissem

Typical and atypical development of visual estimation abilities.

Despite the fact that developmental impairments of number skills are common, they remain sparsely investigated. We explored low-level numerical representations and their developmental trajectory in a developmental disorder, Williams syndrome (WS). Groups of WS and typically developing (TD) individuals estimated rapidly-presented arrays of 5, 7, 9, and 11 dots. In comparison to the normal developmental trajectory, the ontogenesis of estimation skills in WS is both delayed and deviant. Whereas TD children's estimations became significantly more accurate and less variable over developmental time,

Preliminary evidence of effects of crisis intervention team training on self-efficacy and social distance.

OBJECTIVE: The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program is a collaborative model involving mental health professionals and law enforcement officers that is being implemented in a multitude of localities across the country. This study had two main objectives: (1) To assess perceptions of self-efficacy and desired social distance of control officers and officers entering CIT training with regard to individuals with psychiatric syndromes (depression and schizophrenia) and individuals with substance dependence (alcohol and cocaine), and (2) To examine the effects, if any, of CIT training on self-eff

Unpacking the Ethiopian paradox of career durability in elite endurance runners via a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia's dominance in distance running is well-documented, yet the systemic factors leading to high rates of athlete burnout and injury remain unexamined. This study addresses the "Ethiopian Paradox": the coexistence of unparalleled success and significant athlete attrition within the same high-performance system. Guided by the Holistic Athlete Development Model, this research investigated the interplay of training, psychological, and socio-cultural factors. METHODS: A retrospective, mixed-methods cohort study was conducted with 60 retired elite Ethiopian endurance runners. Two

Sex-based differences in physical and psychological recovery, and return to sport, following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: A robust comparison of the recovery pathway between sexes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is lacking. This study investigated sex-based differences in physical and psychological recovery, and return to sport (RTS), after ACLR. METHODS: 104 community-level patients underwent ACLR. Patients were evaluated at 6-, 12- and 24-months with the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Return to Sport after Injury Scale (ACL-RSI), International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) form and Tegner Activity Scale (TAS), a 4-hop test battery including the 6-meter timed hop (6MTH) and

Qualitative analysis of a psychological supportive counseling group for burn survivors and families in Malawi.

OBJECTIVE: While psychological care, including supportive group therapy, is a mainstay of burn treatment in the developed world, few reports of support groups for burn survivors and their caregivers in the developing world exist. This study records the findings of a support group in Malawi and provides a qualitative analysis of thematic content discussed by burn survivors and caregivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We established a support group for burn survivors and caregivers from February-May 2012 in the burn unit at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. Sessions were held weekly for tw

Emotionally Abusive Behavior in Italian Middle School Teachers as Identified by Students.

The aim of this article was to estimate the prevalence of psychological maltreatment in Italian middle school students by their teachers, and to test the applicability of surveying instruments for this phenomenon in Italian educational settings. The sample consisted of 105 teachers and 128 middle school students, who were asked about their experiences with emotionally abusive behaviors (i.e., demeaning, discriminating, dominating, destabilizing, distancing, and diverse) in the Italian school system. Teachers did not tend to perceive their behavior as abusive, while the students showed a very h

Are Positive Interventions Always Beneficial?

Can people improve their lives by smiling more, trying to have a better posture, and by thinking about good memories? Can individuals become more successful by deliberatively engaging in positive actions and thoughts? Do people feel better by following recommendations from naïve psychology? In the present article we discuss these questions, noting that although some popular interventions thought to be universally beneficial (e.g., inductions of happiness, self-affirmation, empowerment, self-distancing) can sometimes yield positive outcomes, at other times the outcomes can also be negative. The child and adolescent telepsychiatry consultation: can it be a more effective clinical process for certain patients than conventional practice?

The literature on the efficacy of telepsychiatry for assessing and treating children and adolescents with mental health problems is still developing, but there is evidence that telepsychiatry is diagnostically valid, and that there is high patient and provider satisfaction. Outcome studies are awaited, with the assumption that telepsychiatry has to demonstrate at least as good outcomes and reliability as face-to-face psychiatric care. In this article we suggest, by reviewing the process of telepsychiatry with children, and illustrating relevant issues with five case studies of patients we have

[Vesicovaginal fistulas - birth complications which can lead to death. The risk of developing fistulas in Western Africa].

A vesicovaginal fistula develops when the blood supplying the tissues of the vagina and the bladder is cut off during prolonged obstructed labour. The tissues necrotize, and a hole forms through which urine passes uncontrollably. Women who develop fistulas are often abandoned by their husbands, rejected by their communities and forced to live an isolated existence. Fistula is called 'the single most dramatic aftermath of neglected childbirth'. In addition to complete incontinence, a fistula victim may develop nerve damage to the lower extremities after a multi-day labour in a squatting positio

A randomised controlled trial to compare clinical and cost-effectiveness of an online parent-led treatment for child anxiety problems with usual care in the context of COVID-19 delivered in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in the UK (Co-CAT): a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In the context of COVID-19, NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and other children's mental health services have faced major challenges in providing psychological treatments that (i) work when delivered remotely and (ii) can be delivered efficiently to manage increases in referrals as social distancing measures have been relaxed. Anxiety problems are a common reason for referral to CAMHS, children with pre-existing anxiety problems are particularly vulnerable in the context of COVID-19, and there were concerns about increases in childhood anxiety as schools reop

The First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Its Impact on the Level of Distress in Patients with Breast Cancer, a Multicentric Study.

BACKGROUND: Information on the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), later termed coronavirus disease (COVID-19), first emerged by the end of 2019. As the pandemic spread, cancer patients were immediately recognized as a high-risk population with regard to COVID-19 infection. Moreover, epidemiological measures, like social distancing and lockdowns, additionally burdened patients with cancer. Even outside pandemic breast cancer patients are prone to psychological distress with prevalence ranging approximately 20-40%. This multicentric study aimed to examine the impact of

Pedicle viability as the determinant factor for conversion to free nipple graft.

INTRODUCTION: Women with extremely large breasts have many complaints. Reduction mammaplasty improves shape and relieves physical symptoms and alleviates psychological complaints. Mammaplasty is a an evolving technique; no single method is ideal or suitable for all breasts. Many techniques are advocated for reduction mammaplasty, including the superior, vertical, horizontal, lateral and inferior (the most popular) pedicle techniques. Even after 60 years of development in breast reduction techniques, there are still reported incidences of nipple-areola complex (NAC) necrosis. OBJECTIVE: To ass
