BACKGROUND: Although smell and taste disorders are highly prevalent symptoms of COVID-19 infection, the predictive factors leading to long-lasting chemosensory dysfunction are still poorly understood.
METHODS: 102 out of 421 (24.2%) mildly symptomatic COVID-19 patients completed a second questionnaire about the evolution of their symptoms one year after the infection using visual analog scales (VAS). Outbred rats differ in their preference for the artificial sweetener sucralose. Psychophysical assessments have shown that the taste of sucralose is differentially generalized to either sucrose or a sucrose-quinine (QHCl) mixture in sucralose preferers (SP) and sucralose avoiders (SA), respectively. It remains to be determined if these differences in the psychophysical assessment of the taste of sucralose are due to an insensitivity to any bitter-like taste component of sucralose in SP or reduced sensitivity to a sweet-like component in SA that may mask any putative aversive side-taste in SP.

PURPOSE: To determine the psychophysical differences between two types of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients with different rod sensitivities.
METHODS: Thirty-five RP patients with a visual acuity of > or =0.7 or better were classified by cone-rod perimetry into type 1, those with undetectable rod sensitivity, and type 2, those with measurable rod sensitivity. Contrast sensitivity, as far as tested with pattern-VEPs, and light-difference sensitivity, psychophysically tested with the Octopus in the visual field center, seem to reflect different visual functions, because they are disturbed to a different degree in discrete neuropathies: light-difference sensitivity may be within normal range and a careful numerical analysis is needed in order to find pathologic differences. In a combined psychophysical-electrophysiological study on 29 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), a compromised ability to make interaural time discriminations was nearly always found to be associated with 'abnormal' brain stem potentials evoked by clicks to at least one ear. However, no obvious relationships were found between evoked brain stem potentials and several other auditory behavioral measures such as interaural intensity discrimination, pure-tone thresholds and speech discrimination.

PURPOSE: A considerable portion of chronic low back pain (cLBP) patients lack anatomical abnormality, resist conventional therapeutic interventions, and their symptoms are often complicated with psychological and social factors. Such patients have been reported to show cerebral abnormalities both in anatomy and function by neuroimaging studies. Here we examined differences in cerebral reactivity to a simulated low back pain stimulus between cLBP patients and healthy controls by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and their behavioral correlates from a psychophysical questionnaire.

The earliest psychophysical disturbances in color vision, foveal sensitivity, spatial and temporal contrast sensitivity precede nerve fiber bundle defects of the visual field in glaucoma.
