Biopsychosocial experiences of adults with congenital heart disease: review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1% of all newborns display some form of congenital heart disease (CHD). Successful medical and surgical management of CHD has allowed 85% of these children to survive into adulthood and produced a new set of challenges for both patients and doctors with an emphasis on quality of life and psychosocial functioning. METHODS: The current paper has 3 aims: (1) to summarize the research literature examining the emotional adjustment among this population, (2) to detail the psychological, social, and quality-of-life factors that might result in an increased risk of psycholog…

Developmental outcome of infants born with biological and psychosocial risks.

The significance of prenatal and perinatal complications (biological risk) and of family adversity (psychosocial risk) on early child development was examined in a prospective study. Developmental outcome of 350 infants was assessed by measures of motor, cognitive, and social-emotional functioning at 3, 24, and 54 months. Results indicated a differential impact of risk factors on specific outcomes. Whereas psychosocial risks became more prominent with growing age and were related to poorer child outcome in all areas of functioning, biological risks decreased in influence and predominantly resu

Additive effects of a family history of schizophrenia spectrum disorders and an environmental risk score for the outcome of patients with non-affective first-episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: First-episode psychotic disorders comprise a heterogeneous phenotype with a complex etiology involving numerous common small-eff … harge from an intensive 2-year program. We evaluated three outcome measures: symptomatic remission, psychosocial functioning, and personal recovery. We analyzed the main and joint associations of a FH-Sz and the ERS-Sz on the outcomes by using the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) approach. RESULTS: A FH-Sz showed a significant association with poor symptoma …

The outcome of episodic versus persistent adolescent depression in young adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Study of the impact of episodic and persistent depression on psychosocial and mental functioning of young adults. METHODS: In a longitudinal representative community sample, four groups of subjects were identified who were depressed either in pre-adolescence, late adolescence or young adulthood or persistently depressed across time, and compared among each other and with a young adult control group. The 90th percentile on one or two self-reported symptom scales (i.e., the Center for Epidemiological Depression Scale (CES-D) or the Anxious/Depressed subscale of either the Youth Self-

Psychosocial risk factors for postherpetic neuralgia: a prospective study of patients with herpes zoster.

UNLABELLED: The results of previous studies using retrospective methods or small samples have suggested that there may be psychosocial risk factors for postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). We conducted a prospective study in which 110 patients with herpes zoster were assessed within the first month after rash onset with measures of acute pain and five broad domains of psychosocial functioning-physical, role, social, and emotional functioning, and stress and social support. Twenty of the 102 patients with follow-up data were diagnosed with PHN, defined as pain that had persisted for 4 months after ras…

Meaning in life among Norwegian outpatients with personality disorders: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Meaning in life (MIL) is associated with positive health outcomes, but is generally low among people suffering from borderline personality disorder (PD). Research has shown that MIL has a buffering effect on depression, as well as borderline traits such as suicidality and self-harm. However, to date, no studies have examined Meaning in Life (MIL) in relation to other prevalent personality disorders such as avoidant PD, nor have they investigated how PD severity influences MIL or whether MIL buffers the impact of PDs on psychosocial functioning. METHODS: Norwegian outpatients (N = …

Are primary and secondary provoked vestibulodynia two different entities? A comparison of pain, psychosocial, and sexual characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Provoked vestibulodynia (PVD) is suspected to be the most frequent cause of vulvodynia in premenopausal women. Based on the onset of PVD relative to the start of sexual experience, PVD can be divided into primary (PVD1) and secondary PVD (PVD2). Studies comparing these PVD subgroups are inconclusive as to whether differences exist in sexual and psychosocial functioning. AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the pain, sexual and psychosocial functioning of a large clinical and community-based sample of premenopausal women with PVD1 and PVD2. METHODS: A total of 269 women (n …

Food Addiction Symptoms and Clinical Outcomes in Binge-Type Eating Disorders: A Randomized Clinical Trial of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Guided Self-Help in China.

OBJECTIVE: Food addiction (FA) is clinically relevant in binge-type eating disorders (EDs), yet its treatment relevance remains unclear in mainland China. This study examined (1) FA's associations with ED psychopathology and psychosocial functioning; (2) FA symptom changes following cognitive behavioral therapy-guided self-help (CBT-gsh); and (3) whether FA improvement was independently associated with changes in psychosocial functioning. METHOD: In this assessor-blind randomized controlled trial, 87 adults with binge-type EDs were allocated to a 10-week asynchronous web-based CBT-gsh program…

The management of children with spinal dysraphism.

Improvements in technology have dramatically increased the survival of children with spinal dysraphism. Because this complex condition affects multiple organ systems as well as the psychosocial functioning of the child and family, these children require care from a host of specialists in order to achieve optimum functioning. This article reviews the pathophysiology and discusses the current management of the medical and psychosocial effects of spinal dysraphism. It also briefly discusses strategies for intervention, long-term outcomes, and some controversies regarding care and screening.

Predictors of psychosocial impairment in a transdiagnostic sample: Unique effects of repetitive negative thinking.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic process involving perseverative, unproductive, and uncontrollable thoughts. Although RNT may impede adaptive psychosocial functioning by prolonging negative mood states, strengthening cognitive biases, and preventing effective problem-solving, the extent to which RNT is associated with risk for poor psychosocial outcomes is unclear. Given that this has clear transdiagnostic treatment implications, the present study aimed to isolate the unique relationship of RNT with social functioning and life satisfaction in a mixed clinical…

Social functioning of schizophrenic patients: clinical and research issues.

Social dysfunction is generally considered an essential feature of schizophrenia. However, despite considerable interest in the social functioning of schizophrenic patients, the precise nature of the social deficits exhibited by these patients remains unspecified. No widely accepted criterion of social competence has been used to investigate their social functioning. Also, social skills researchers have often failed to recognize the heterogeneity of schizophrenia and the impact that this heterogeneity may have on attempts to implement psychosocial interventions. The adverse findings regarding

Psychosocial predictors of outcomes up to one year following total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) aims to relieve pain and improve physical functioning of the knee, however, some patients continue to experience pain and impaired function following TKA which cannot be explained by surgical and implant factors. Psychological factors may influence the outcomes of TKA. The aim of this prospective study was to examine the psychosocial factors that predicted pain, stiffness and physical functioning up to one year following TKA. METHODS: One hundred and two patients completed pre-operative and one-year questionnaires which assessed a wide range of psycho
