[The actual condition of laboratory diagnostic of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea; the methods of detection of toxigenic strains (review of publications).].

The Clostridium difficile-associated infection (CDI) is one of the main causes of nosocomial diarrhea. The complicacy of laboratory diagnostic results in progression of disease bringing on extensive inflammatory alterations in the wall of large intestine and characterizing by superficial necrosis of mucous membrane with development of "pseudo-membranes" resulting in development of toxic megacolon, perforation of intestinal wall, peritonitis and sepsis. The main role in diagnosing plays indication of agent and detection of its toxins. None of laboratory tests can be applied as an independent te

From empathy to action: exploring emotional mechanisms of online public opinion in a public health crisis.

INTRODUCTION: Drawing on digital empathy theory, this study explores how empathic expressions evolve and manifest as action-oriented behaviors in online public discourse during a public health crisis. Specifically, it focuses on a doctor's suicide incident discussed on the Weibo platform, examining how various empathy types influence public opinion and engagement. By investigating the emotional and behavioral responses within the digital realm, the study contributes to understanding the complex dynamics of empathy and its impact on collective emotion and decision-making during health-related c

Embedding the public voice in clinical trials: developing public-informed training for patient data research.

BACKGROUND: The use of health systems data (HSD) such as patient records and prescriptions is expanding within clinical trials to improve efficiency, reduce participant burden, and enhance real‑world relevance. However, challenges remain around governance, data quality, transparency and public trust, echoed through discussions in this project. While Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement is increasingly embedded in trial design, involvement in methodological and data‑focused areas remains limited. Ensuring that HSD trial training for researchers and public reflects public perspectives i

Promotion of Preventive Sleep Research from the Perspective of Health and Public Safety in Japan - Secondary Publication.

Ensuring good sleep quality and adequate sleep duration is crucial for health. Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) impairs sleep quality and increases the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and accidents. The author has significantly advanced the understanding of SAS in Japan through over 20 years of epidemiological studies. Findings have revealed that individuals with a 3% oxygen desaturation index (ODI) ≥15 events/h have a 1.69-fold higher risk of developing diabetes. Those with mild to severe sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) with a 3% ODI ≥5 events/h face high risks of heart disease and lacu

Gender disparities in the application of public-access AED pads among OHCA patients in public locations.

BACKGROUND: Female out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients have been reported to be less likely to receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation by bystanders compared with male patients in prehospital settings. However, no clinical studies have investigated gender disparities in the application of public-access automated external defibrillator (AED) pads among OHCA patients in public locations. METHODS: OHCA data from 2011 to 2018 were obtained from the OHCA registry in Osaka City, Japan and OHCAs that occurred in public locations were included. Gender differences in receiving public-access A

Public health and public trust: Survey evidence from the Ebola Virus Disease epidemic in Liberia.

Trust in government has long been viewed as an important determinant of citizens' compliance with public health policies, especially in times of crisis. Yet evidence on this relationship remains scarce, particularly in the developing world. We use results from a representative survey conducted during the 2014-15 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) epidemic in Monrovia, Liberia to assess the relationship between trust in government and compliance with EVD control interventions. We find that respondents who expressed low trust in government were much less likely to take precautions against EVD in their ho

Ethnicity, equity and public benefit: a critical evaluation of public umbilical cord blood banking in Australia.

Over the past decade umbilical cord blood (UCB) has been increasingly used as a source of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for patients who require a HSC transplant but do not have an HLA-matched donor. It was anticipated that using UCB as an alternative source of HSCs would increase the chance of finding a donor, particularly for the otherwise underrepresented ethnic minority groups. To evaluate the effectiveness of the Australian public UCB banks to increase the ethnic diversity of available HSC donations, this paper analyses the ethnic diversity of the Sydney Cord Blood Bank (SCBB), compari

An Exploratory Analysis of Public Awareness and Perception of Ionizing Radiation and Guide to Public Health Practice in Vermont.

Exposure to ionizing radiation has potential for acute and chronic health effects. Within the general public of the United States, there may be a discrepancy between perceived and actual health risks. In conjunction with the Vermont Department of Health, a survey designed to assess public perception and knowledge of ionizing radiation was administered at 6 Vermont locations (n = 169). Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted. Eighty percent of respondents underestimated the contribution of medical imaging tests to total ionizing radiation exposure. Although only thirty-n

Public opinion about AIDS before and after the 1988 U.S. government public information campaign.

In October, 1987, the Centers for Disease Control mounted a massive public information campaign to alert the public to the dangers of AIDS and to provide information about its transmission and prevention. Using data from two Gallup surveys, one just before the campaign began and the other several months after its conclusion, we examine changes in public information and misinformation about transmission, in concern about AIDS as an epidemic, and in reported behavior to avoid exposure to AIDS. We conclude that although some changes in knowledge did take place, these were essentially a continuati

Text mining, a race against time? An attempt to quantify possible variations in text corpora of medical publications throughout the years.

BACKGROUND: The continuous growth of medical sciences literature indicates the need for automated text analysis. Scientific writing which is neither unitary, transcending social situation nor defined by a timeless idea is subject to constant change as it develops in response to evolving knowledge, aims at different goals, and embodies different assumptions about nature and communication. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether publication dates should be considered when performing text mining. METHODS: A search of PUBMED for combined references to chemokine identifiers and particu

Is there an ideal outcome scoring system for facial reanimation surgery? A review of current methods and suggestions for future publications.

Facial reanimation is the surgical process of attempting to restore dynamic, spontaneous symmetry to the paralysed face. We undertook to review the most frequently used scoring systems and discuss a universal set of assessments which every facial palsy surgeon can use to standardize the outcome of surgical intervention and allow a comparison to be drawn when comparing different operative techniques. A literature review was performed using PubMed and Cochrane databases to identify scoring systems for facial palsy, facial nerve regeneration and facial reanimation. The scoring systems were broken

A review of the scientific literature on experimental toxicity studies of COVID-19 vaccines, with special attention to publications in toxicology journals.

Since the reports of the first cases of COVID-19, in less than 5 years, a huge number of documents regarding that disease and the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for the infection, have been published. The tremendous number of scientific documents covers many topics on different issues directly related to COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2. The number of articles-including reviews-reporting adverse/side effects of the approved COVID-19 vaccines is considerable. A wide range of adverse/side effects have been reported in humans after COVID-19 vaccination: thrombotic events/thrombocytopenia, myocarditis/p
