Preoperative muscle weakness is a risk factor for persistent pain 1 year after hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is a common condition causing hip and groin pain. Hip arthroscopy has been established as a viable treatment option when nonoperative management fails to relieve symptoms of FAIS. Despite the numerous positive hip arthroscopy outcomes for FAIS, some individuals experience persistent postoperative pain. Preoperative muscle strength may be associated with persistent pain and function after arthroscopy in patients with FAIS; however, further investigation is necessary to confirm this theory. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of preoperati

Response of mitochondria of different types of skeletal muscle to thyrotoxicosis.

To determine the effect of long-term thyrotoxicosis on muscle mitochondria, we measured representative mitochondrial enzymes from three different types of skeletal muscle (fast-twitch red and fast-twitch white from the quadriceps, and slow-twitch red from the soleus) in rats given 3 mg L-thyroxine and 1 mg triiodo-L-thyronine per kilogram of diet for 12 wk. Marker enzymes of the electron transport chain and citric acid cycle (cytochrome oxidase, cytochrome c, and citrate synthase) increase approximately twofold in soleus muscle in response to this treatment. The fast-twitch muscles exhibit no

Do knee injuries have long-term consequences for isometric and dynamic muscle strength?

To ascertain whether decrements in knee extensor muscle strength persist years after a traumatic ligamentous or meniscal knee injury, with reference to (1) the type of muscle activity, (2) the dominance of injury, and (3) the time since injury, 36 subjects with previous unilateral knee injuries were assessed. Peak voluntary quadriceps muscle strength was measured using the KinCom 500H dynamometer during isometric, concentric (30 degrees.s-1 and 120 degrees.s-1) and eccentric contractions (30.s-1), and the findings for each type of contraction were compared. Significant differences in quadricep…

Quadriceps protects the anterior cruciate ligament.

The aim of this study is to show that the quadriceps is the primary muscular restraint to anterior tibial translation during closed kinetic chain activities such as running, jumping, walking, and standing. It is my hypothesis that the quadriceps vector is directed superiorly during open kinetic chain knee extension and inferiorly during closed kinetic chain knee extension. My methods involve vector analysis based on a lateral radiograph of the normal human knee and muscle ultrasound. My results show that the quadriceps vector is directed superiorly for open kinetic chain knee extension and inf

Structural and Functional Principles in Quadriceps Reconstruction.

Quadriceps muscle and tendon injuries are a significant cause of impairment of the knee extensor mechanism, ranging from minor muscle strains to complete tendon ruptures and extensive defects following oncologic resections. This narrative review provides a comprehensive analysis of contemporary concepts in anatomy, biomechanics, diagnosis, surgical management, and rehabilitation, with a particular focus on reconstructive techniques and functional outcomes. While most muscle injuries respond well to conservative management, complete quadriceps tendon ruptures typically require surgical repair t…

Nutritional status in alcoholics with and without chronic skeletal muscle myopathy.

There was a significant reduction in body mass index (15%) and creatinine-height index (22%) in the chronic alcoholics with atrophic quadriceps biopsies indicating significant loss of skeletal muscle protein. Various parameters of nutrition were assessed in chronic alcoholics with and without the commonly associated selective atrophy of type II skeletal muscle fibres, to determine if malnutrition is related to the muscle injury. Serum alkaline ribonuclease activity, a marker of protein nutritional status, was significantly higher in chronic alcoholics compared to controls, suggesting some degr

Saccharomyces cerevisiae-Fermented Salmon Placental Protein Inhibits Muscle Loss in a Mouse Model of Sarcopenia.

Addressing sarcopenia and frailty in aging populations is crucial for improving quality of life and reducing healthcare dependence among these patients. Although no specific drugs have been approved for treating sarcopenia, protein supplements rich in branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) have been reported to increase muscle mass and function in elderly individuals. Fermentation of salmon placenta protein is an effective approach to improve BCAA content compared to previous sarcopenia-related protein supplements. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate BCAA content through salmon placenta protein

Diabetic amyotrophy masquerading as quadriceps tendon rupture: a word of caution.

Diabetic amyotrophy is predominantly a motor condition that involves various elements of the lumbosacral plexus but particularly that related to the femoral nerve. (1,3) It can present acutely as unilateral thigh pain followed by the development of weakness and later wasting in the femoral muscles, usually first seen in the quadriceps. We report on two cases of diabetic amyotrophy from different hospitals that presented with clinical signs and symptoms of quadriceps rupture. These patients underwent surgical exploration but in both the quadriceps tendons were found to be intact. Post-operative

Medial and lateral hamstrings and quadriceps co-activation affects knee joint kinematics and ACL elongation: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Many injury prevention and rehabilitation programs aim to train hamstring and quadriceps co-activation to constrain excessive anterior tibial translation and protect the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) from injury. However, despite strong clinical belief in its efficacy, primary evidence supporting training co-activation of the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles for ACL injury prevention and rehabilitation is quite limited. Therefore, the purpose of the study presented in this paper was to determine if hamstring-quadriceps co-activation alters knee joint kinematics, and also establ…

Functional and muscle morphometric effects of ACL reconstruction. A prospective CT study with 1 year follow-up.

Computed tomography (CT) was used to explore if changes in muscle cross-sectional area and quality after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and reconstruction would be related to knee function. Fourteen females and 23 males (16-54 years) underwent clinical tests, subjective questionnaires, and CT 1 week before and 1 year after ACL surgery with semitendinosus-gracilis (STG) graft and rehabilitation. Postoperatively, knee laxity was decreased and functional knee measures and subjective patient scores improved. The most obvious remaining deficit was the quadriceps atrophy, which was signific

A novel short-course, low-intensity blood-flow-restricted exercise (BFRE) regimen to study satellite cell function in critical illness survivors with sustained muscle atrophy following intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICUAW).

INTRODUCTION: ICU-acquired weakness (ICUAW) develops in critically ill patients and can persist after hospital discharge, resulting in physical disability. Decreased satellite cell content is reported in the atrophic muscle of critical illness survivors, suggesting that the sustained muscle wasting results from satellite cell dysfunction and impaired muscle regeneration. Intense resistance exercise stimulates satellite cell proliferation and can be used to study the satellite cell role in persisting muscle atrophy following ICU discharge; however, the intensity of exercise required can be into

Effects of multiple motor point stimulation on knee joint torque compared with conventional functional electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) delivers transcutaneous electrical current to motor nerves to artificially evoke muscle contractions and produce joint torque. In neurorehabilitation, FES is commonly applied via a large surface electrode pair placed over a muscle group-an approach that we here refer to as single-electrode stimulation (SES). However, the torque-generating capacity of SES is limited, possibly due to spatial-fixation of recruited motor units. Targeting specific regions of high electrical excitability, or motor points, may enhance neuromuscular activation and in
