Effects of Phytosterols as Food Additives on Adrenal and Reproductive Endocrine Function during Sexual Maturation in Male Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Varying amounts of phytosterols (PS) occur naturally in several foods of plant origin. PS, which are structurally and functionally similar to cholesterol, have been shown to reduce plasma total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. Moreover, PS disrupts endocrine function in certain animals. In the present study, we investigated the effects of high doses of PS on adrenal and reproductive endocrine function during sexual maturation in Japanese male quails. Two experiments were conducted; in the first experiment, quail chicks were subjected to long-term chronic…

Rapid adjustment of the pineal N-acetyltransferase rhythm to change from long to short photoperiod in the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

The dynamics of adjusting the pineal N-acetyltransferase rhythm from long to short photoperiod was assessed in the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The transition from LD 16:8 to LD 8:16 was accomplished by symmetrical prolongation of the dark period. In LD 16:8, the period of elevated nocturnal activity lasted approximately 7 hours. During the first prolonged night, the evening N-acetyltransferase rise advanced by almost 3 hours relative to the rise in LD 16:8 and occurred at the same time as during the 3rd, 7th, and 14th day after the transition. The morning N-acetyltransferase d…

Investigation of Pleurotus Ostreatus Mushroom-Based Feed Supplementations on Growth Performance and Immune Function in Male Japanese Quails (Coturnix Japonica).

Growing concern over antibiotic resistance in poultry production has increased interest in natural feed additives such as Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushroom)-derived products. This study evaluated three freeze-dried oyster mushroom powders: total fresh fruiting body (OMP-TF), cooked solid residue (OMP-CSR), and cooked liquid fraction (OMP-CL), as dietary supplements in male Coturnix japonica. A β-glucan positive control and basal diet negative control were included. Birds (1-day-old) were fed experimental diets from 1 to 28 days. An Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge was app

Chicken Origin Tribasic H9N2 Avian Influenza Virus Induces Potent Early Antiviral Response With Low Pathogenicity in Japanese Quails.

BACKGROUND: Low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) virus H9N2 has been endemic in Bangladesh since 2006. While the molecular epidemiology and pathogenicity of circulating tribasic H9N2 viruses are well-documented in chickens, data on pathogenicity in quails remain limited. Given the fact that quails serve as potential mixing vessels for avian influenza viruses, understanding of currently circulating tribasic H9N2 viruses' pathobiology is crucial. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to observe pathogenicity, including clinicopathological changes, virus shedding, and cytokine expression of the …

Polyphenisms in the reproductive response of male quail to short days are driven by testosterone-independent uncoupling in the photoperiodic TSH-DIO2/DIO3 pathway.

The neuroendocrine control of seasonal breeding in vertebrates depends upon a TSH/DIO2-3 pathway located in the medio-basal hypothalamus. In male quail, early data demonstrated that this photoperiodic control is independent of testosterone. At least two strong predictions arise from this. First, testosterone is unlikely to exert any significant feedback upon the expression of Tshb/Dio2/Dio3. Second, in situations where photoperiod is invariable but reproductive output differs amongst individuals, differential expression of Tshb and/or Dio2/Dio3 may be expected. Here, we validate these two pred…

Determining the hierarchical order by which intestinal tract, administered diet, and individual relay can shape the gut microbiome of fattening quails.

A bacterial metabarcoding approach was used to compare the microbiome composition of caecal and faecal samples from fattening Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) fed three different diet regimes. The tested feedstuffs included (1) a commercial diet for fattening quails, (2) a commercial diet containing 12% full-fat silkworm (Bombyx mori) pupae meal, and (3) a commercial diet containing 12% defatted silkworm pupae meal. The aim of the experiment was to verify the relative effect of three variables (diet type, gut tract comparing caecum to rectum, and individual animal) in determining t…

Lead exposure disrupted ileal barrier of developmental Japanese quails(Coturnix japonica): Histopathological damages, microbiota dysbiosis and immune disorder.

The gut barrier plays an essential role in maintaining homeostasis and is usually composed of a mechanical barrier, a chemical barrier, an immune barrier, and a biological barrier. However, the impacts of lead (Pb) exposure on avian gut barrier are still unclear. Therefore, the present study tried to determine the toxic effects of Pb on ileal barrier of a biological model-Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). One-week old quails were exposed to 0, 50, 500 and 1000 ppm Pb in drinking water for 5 weeks. The results showed mechanic barrier in the ileum was disrupted with microstructural deformation…

Epidermal growth factor receptors and their ligands are expressed in the spleen of the Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) during the post-hatch period.

1. The epidermal growth factor (EGF) family plays an important role in the development, differentiation, migration and apoptosis of cells, as well as in wound healing, which are all essential to the viability of multicellular organisms. The avian spleen is a principal organ of systemic immunity and its importance in disease resistance is presumably accentuated by the scarcity of avian lymph nodes.2. The aim of this study was to determine whether EGF receptors (ErbB1-4) and their ligands (EGF, AREG and NRG) are expressed in the structural components of the quail spleen during the post-hatch per…

Assessment of the effects of early life exposure to triphenyl phosphate on fear, boldness, aggression, and activity in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) chicks.

Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) is an organophosphate ester (OPE) used as a flame retardant (FR) and plasticizer. TPHP has previously been shown to disrupt behaviour in fish and mammals, but to our knowledge, this is the first study on the behavioural effects of TPHP in birds. Early life stage Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) were exposed to nominal doses of 0 ng/g (vehicle-control), 5 ng/g (low dose), 50 ng/g (mid dose), and 100 ng/g (high dose) TPHP, both as embryos (via air cell injection prior to incubation) and as chicks (via daily gavage until 5 days post-hatch). The low dose reflects TPHP …
