Modeling stimulus variation in three common implicit attitude tasks.

We explored the consequences of ignoring the sampling variation due to stimuli in the domain of implicit attitudes. A large literature in psycholinguistics has examined the statistical treatment of random stimulus materials, but the recommendations from this literature have not been applied to the social psychological literature on implicit attitudes. This is partly because of inherent complications in applying crossed random-effect models to some of the most common implicit attitude tasks, and partly because no work to date has demonstrated that random stimulus variation is in fact consequent

Considerations When Treating Cosmetic Concerns in Men of Color.

BACKGROUND: Men of color include a diverse population encompassing individuals with Fitzpatrick skin Types IV through VI. Yet, there is a paucity of data describing the cosmetic concerns of this population. OBJECTIVE: To review the basic science of advantages and disadvantages of skin of color and pathophysiology, incidence, and treatment of disorders of cosmetic concern in men of color. METHODS: A MEDLINE search was performed for publications on sex and racial differences in basic science of skin, common disorders in men of color, and evidence-based treatments. RESULTS: There are intrinsic

Meta-analysis of congenitally missing teeth in the permanent dentition: Prevalence, variations across ethnicities, regions and time.

BACKGROUND: Congenitally missing teeth (CMT) are of concern to many fields of dentistry. Only a few reviews have been published in this regard. AIM: The aim was to analyze the literature on CMT in the permanent dentition, excluding the third molars, and to identify potential links with ethnicity, geographical regions, and time. METHODS: A total of 118 reports on CMT were collected by two authors by interrogating databases. Sample homogeneity, publication bias, publication year (in Caucasian and Mongoloid samples, and in general), ethnicities, and geography of CMT prevalence were statisticall

Hair and scalp disorders in ethnic populations.

Human hair has been classified into 3 major groups, as determined by ethnic origin. In these populations, significant structural and biochemical variations of the hair follicle and shaft are seen, as well as unique hair grooming practices. These structural variations of the hair are closely linked to the common disorders of the hair and scalp, such as acquired trichorrhexis nodosa, seborrheic dermatitis, traction alopecia, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, dissecting cellulitis, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Three decades of twin births in the United States, 1980-2009.

The number of twins has doubled and the rate of twin births has risen by more than three-fourths over the three decades 1980–2009. Increases in twin birth rates averaged more than 2 percent annually from 1980 to 2004, but the pace of increase slowed to less than 1 percent from 2005 to 2009. The increase in twinning over the three decades has been widespread, occurring across age and race and Hispanic origin groups, and in all states within the United States. The largest increases have been among non-Hispanic white women and mothers aged 30 and over. Older maternal age accounts for about one-th

"Race" and "ethnicity" in biomedical research: how do scientists construct and explain differences in health?

Social and biomedical scientists, journal editors, and public health officials continue to debate the merits of the use of race and ethnicity in health-related research. As biomedical research focuses on issues of racial or ethnic health disparities, it remains unclear how biomedical scientists investigate race or ethnicity and health. This paper examines how biomedical researchers construct and analyze race or ethnicity in their studies and what conclusions they make about difference and health. Using content analysis of 204 biomedical research journal publications, which were supported by gr

Selective testing criteria for gonorrhea among young women screened for Chlamydial infection: contribution of race and geographic prevalence.

BACKGROUND: Selective screening criteria have been widely implemented for genital Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infections but have rarely been developed for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) infection. METHODS: Women tested for CT in Washington State Infertility Prevention Project clinics in 2003 were also tested for GC using the Gen-Probe APTIMA COMBO 2 TMA assay. We derived 3 sets of selective testing criteria (STC) for gonorrhea, incorporating risk factors identified using logistic regression (STC-1), self-identified race (STC-2), and local rates of gonorrhea in men (STC-3). RESULTS: Of 55,781 wom

Ulcerative colitis in a multiracial Asian country: racial differences and clinical presentation among Malaysian patients.

AIM: Inflammatory bowel disease appears to be uncommon among Asians. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of ulcerative colitis (UC) in Malaysian patients and to establish the spectrum of the disease seen in Malaysian patients. Three major Asian races: Malay, Chinese, and Indian co-exist in Malaysia and we sought to determine if there were any racial differences in the prevalence and presentation of disease. Racial differences for several other gastrointestinal diseases have previously been observed and found to be extremely interesting. METHODS: Data were obtained retrospecti

Racial and gender variations in adult hip morphology.

Pelvic X-rays of 99 adult patients (198 hips) were analysed in 58 men and 41 women to determine the morphology of the adult hip in Malawians. For each hip the centre edge angle of Wiberg, the acetabular angle of Sharp and the acetabular head index were measured. For each parameter, women were more dysplastic than men, and for the acetabular angle of Sharp there was a significant gender difference ( p<0.05, t test). Our figures were compared to those of Fujii et al. who had measured the same parameters in Japanese and British hips. His results taken with ours showed that within a racial group,

Race, class, and environmental health: a review and systematization of the literature.

This paper analyzes and systematizes the race and class differentials in exposure to toxic hazards and actual health outcomes. Research is categorized into the following: Proximity to known hazards includes (1) presence of hazardous waste sites and facilities (landfills, incinerators, Superfund sites), (2) exposure to air pollution, (3) exposure to various environmental hazards, e.g., toxic releases and hazards in pesticides and foods; Regulation, amelioration and cleanup includes (4) record of decisions (RODs) and cleanups at NPL sites, (5) regulatory action, as measured by assessed fines for

Cysts of the oral mucosa in newborns: a clinical observation.

Nodules or cysts of the oral mucosa occurred with an incidence of 88.7 per cent in 541 Japanese newborn infants. No infant was over 8 days old. This incidence is higher than that reported in Caucasian and Negro newborns. It may be suggested that the frequency of visible nodules have a close relation to growth and development in the fetal life, because the cysts seen in newborns can be recognized histologically in most fetuses, as demonstrated in other papers. Although a variety of terminology for these nodules have been used, these oral cysts can be classified as follows: gingival cyst in the

The geographic hypothesis and lactose malabsorption. A weighing of the evidence.

Reviewed in this article is evidence bearing on the geographic hypothesis advanced eight years ago to explain the striking ethnic or racial differences in prevalence of primary adult lactose malabsorption that are found around the world. Most evidence is found to support the hypothesis and the likelihood that some human groups came to have low prevalences of such lactose malabsorption because of selective pressures over a long historical period that favored the adult lactose absorber under particular ecological conditions.

Underreported Demographic Factors in Apraxia of Speech Treatment Studies: Recommendations for Inclusive Research.

PURPOSE: While acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) has been the focus of intervention research for decades, little information is reported about the demographic representation of study participants. This article examines the extent to which published AOS treatment studies report participants' age, sex/gender, race/ethnicity, language background, and socioeconomic status; identifies critical gaps in the literature; and considers implications for representativeness. This information supports the important call to capture these patient factors systematically and thereby advance equity in research an

Decades After the NIH Revitalization Act: Persistent Gaps in Diversity of US Antidepressant Trials.

Background: Clinical trials for antidepressants inform prescribing practices and clinical guidelines, but the demographic composition of the trial participants affects the generalizability. For this reason, the sex, race, and ethnicity reporting and participant composition in US antidepressant trials must be investigated. Methods: We searched ClinicalTrials.gov for completed US antidepressant trials conducted between January 1, 1993, and September 1, 2025. Data on trial characteristics and the reporting of sex, race, and ethnicity were extracted (n=166 trials). Normality of the observed trial-
