Effect of exposure to radiation on the inflammatory process and its influence by diclofenac.

The effect of radiation exposure on the inflammatory process was studied in rats using the carrageenan-induced paw oedema and adjuvant-induced arthritis tests. Irradiation (0.5,1 and 2 Grays) resulted in a significant augmentation of the tissue response to carrageenan and the early phase of adjuvant-induced arthritis, but suppressed the late phase. Diclofenac (1-5 mg kg-1) effectively reduced the exaggerated inflammatory response in irradiated animals in both the carrageenan paw oedema and adjuvant-induced arthritis tests. The drug also had a prophylactic value in guarding against the inductio

Comparison of Five Modeling Approaches to Quantify and Estimate the Effect of Clouds on the Radiation Amplification Factor (RAF) for Solar Ultraviolet Radiation.

A generally accepted value for the Radiation Amplification Factor (RAF), with respect to the erythemal action spectrum for sunburn of human skin, is -1.1, indicating that a 1.0% increase in stratospheric ozone leads to a 1.1% decrease in the biologically damaging UV radiation in the erythemal action spectrum reaching the Earth. The RAF is used to quantify the non-linear change in the biologically damaging UV radiation in the erythemal action spectrum as a function of total column ozone (O3). Spectrophotometer measurements recorded at ten US monitoring sites were used in this analysis, and over

[Effect of a constant magnetic field and gamma radiation on the hereditary structure of somatic cells. Effect of the combination of a constant magnetic field and ionizing radiation on human lymphocytes in vitro].

Samples of human whole blood were exposed in CMF (field induction, 0.3 T) for 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 120, 150, 180, 240, 300 or 360 min. 15 min following exposure, the samples were gamma-irradiated in a dose of 0.0516 C/kg (137Cs) at a dose rate of 1.95 A/kg. The following chromosome aberrations were scored: deletions dicentrics, rings, and symmetrical exchanges. Exposure of the blood in CMF for 15 to 360 min decreased radiation damage to cells as compared with unexposed irradiated samples. The extention of time from 15 to 180 min increases the effect the smallest amount of chromosome damages

Awareness of medical radiation exposure among patients: A patient survey as a first step for effective communication of ionizing radiation risks.

INTRODUCTION: The European Directive 2013/59/EURATOM requires patient radiation dose information to be included in the medical report of radiological procedures. To provide effective communication to the patient, it is necessary to first assess the patient's level of knowledge regarding medical exposure. The goal of this work is to survey patients' current knowledge level of both medical exposure to ionizing radiation and professional disciplines and communication means used by patients to garner information. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire was designed comprised of thirteen questions:

Radiation-induced ionization effects and space mission requirements for silicon photonic Mach-Zehnder modulators.

Photonic integrated circuits have become essential for meeting the growing global demand for high-capacity information processing and transport. Assessing their radiation tolerance is necessary for deploying systems in radiation prone environments - including in space, high-energy particle accelerators, and defense radiation testing facilities - where the performance and compactness of photonic integrated circuits are increasingly advantageous. This work investigates the analog and digital radio frequency electro-optic performance of Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) subject to 10-keV X-ray irrad

Friend or Foe: Dietary Restriction and Its Protective Effects on Responses to Ionizing Radiation.

Dietary restriction (DR) has been extensively investigated for its capacity to extend lifespan and mitigate age-associated pathologies. In the context of ionizing radiation (IR), DR-implemented through caloric reduction, selective nutrient restriction, or fasting-based regimens-has emerged as a significant modulator of both cellular and systemic responses to radiation exposure. Growing evidence suggests that DR influences radiation outcomes in a highly context-dependent manner, exerting either protective or sensitizing effects depending on tissue type, metabolic status, timing of intervention,

The Detection of Radiation Effects in the Urine of Rhesus Macaques Using Raman Spectroscopy.

Exposure to ionizing radiation has been associated with the development of neoplasms in humans and other animals. Detection of both neoplastic growth and effects of radiation with standard laboratory testing (hematology and serum chemistry analyses) is problematic. There are no specific biomarkers present in biological fluids (blood, urine) for early detection of neoplastic growth or long-term effects of radiation exposure, but these would be extremely useful for monitoring both treatment efficacy and detecting undesirable side effects in patients undergoing radiotherapy. We conducted a retros

Effects of Fractionated Low Dose Ionizing Radiation on Cellular Senescence in Mouse Lung Tissue.

Fractionated low dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) can induce various biological effects, which are key potential triggers for the development of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). This study aims to investigate the effects of fractionated LDIR on early-stage cellular senescence, as well as on the levels of oxidation-antioxidation and DNA damage repair, in mouse lung tissue. C57BL/6J mice were exposed to fractionated LDIR, and subsequent assays were performed to evaluate the biological effects. Compared with the control group, mice in all dose groups showed the following changes: varying degre

Multi-omics integration reveals inhibitory effects of carbon ion radiation on lung adenocarcinoma proliferation.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the inhibitory effect of carbon ion (C-ion) radiation-induced biological effects on the proliferation of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) by multi-omics integration. METHODS: We investigated C-ion radiation effects on LUAD cellular responses using A549 and LLC cell lines. Clonogenic survival assays, DNA damage, and metastasis quantified radiation sensitivity, while a multi-cell co-culture system (A549/Beas-2B/LLC/MLE-12) differentiated direct vs. bystander effects. Integrated transcriptomics and targeted metabolomics identified radiation-responsive genes/metabolites, with path…
