Topical non-steroidal agents for the prevention of radiation dermatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Radiation dermatitis (RD) is a common side effect of radiation therapy, affecting a majority of breast and head and neck cancer patients with a negative impact on quality of life. Currently, no consensus exists regarding the prevention of RD. METHODS: PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases (1946 to December 2022) were searched using PRISMA guidelines to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the use of topical non-steroidal agents in the prevention of RD in patients undergoing radiotherapy. RESULTS: A total of six RCTs were included, comprising 627 patients. A

Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) clinical practice guidelines for the prevention and management of acute radiation dermatitis: international Delphi consensus-based recommendations.

Acute radiation dermatitis is a frequent adverse effect of radiotherapy, but standardisation of care for acute radiation dermatitis is lacking. Due to the conflicting evidence and variability in current guidelines, a four-round Delphi consensus process was used to compile opinions of 42 international experts on care for people with acute radiation dermatitis on the basis of the evidence in existing medical literature. Interventions for acute radiation dermatitis prevention or management that reached at least 75% consensus were recommended for clinical use. Six interventions could be recommende

Topical corticosteroids for the prevention of severe radiation dermatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Radiation dermatitis (RD) is a frequently occurring adverse reaction during radiotherapy in cancer patients. While the use of topical corticosteroids (TCs) is common for the treatment of RD, its role in preventing severe reactions remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the evidence on the use of TCs as prophylaxis of RD. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using OVID MedLine, Embase, and Cochrane databases (between 1946 and 2023) to identify studies examining TC use in the prevention of severe RD. Statistical analysis was completed using RevM

A novel, multi-active emollient for the prevention of acute radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients: a randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of a novel, multi-active emollient in preventing and managing acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) in breast cancer patients undergoing moderate hypofractionated (HF) radiotherapy (RT) compared to standard of care. METHODSA: A monocentric, open-label, randomized clinical trial (RCT) with breast cancer patients receiving moderate HF (dose: 40.05-55.86 Gy, fractions: 15-21) was conducted between January 2022 and May 2023. The experimental group received the novel emollient, while the control group received the standard skin care. Patients applied the skin care p

Effectiveness and Tolerability of Natural Herbal Formulations in the Prevention of Radiation-Induced Skin Toxicity in Patients Undergoing Radiotherapy.

The aim of this study is to investigate the preventive role of 3 herbal formulation products on reducing the incidence of radiation-induced dermatitis in patients undergoing radiotherapy for either breast or head and neck cancer. A total of 59 patients participated in the study. The novel herbal products, a combination of beeswax, olive oil, Calendula and Hypericum oils and Aloe gel, were daily and regularly being used by the patients during radiotherapy and 2 weeks after treatment end. Acute skin toxicity was scored weekly during radiotherapy and after treatment for a further 4-week follow-up

Radiation recall dermatitis in response to adjuvant capecitabine immediately following postoperative radiotherapy in a patient with breast cancer.

Radiation recall is a known rare skin reaction that occurs in response to various systemic therapies following radiotherapy (RT). Implementation of a new treatment protocol, even with a drug that is commonly administered, should be approached with caution. This report details the clinical experience of a patient with breast cancer who experienced radiation recall dermatitis or radiosensitization in response to adjuvant capecitabine immediately following postoperative RT.

Radiation dermatitis: an overview.

Radiation therapy has been a commonly employed modality for a variety of ailments, including cancer. Patients undergoing radiation often experience acute and/or chronic skin changes that can be detrimental to their quality of life. Many topical agents and specialized wound dressings are being used for the prevention and management of radiation-induced skin changes. However, no single therapeutic option has been found to be consistently effective.

Optimal Topical Agent for Radiation Dermatitis During Breast Radiotherapy: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Women receiving radiation to the breast will likely be recommended to use a topical cream to minimize and delay the development of radiation dermatitis. Although many topical products are commercially available and have been tested for safety and efficacy, few studies have compared various products to one another for superiority and cost effectiveness. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this pilot study was to compare three commonly used skin care products prospectively to one other in a homogenously controlled group of women undergoing whole breast irradiation to assess superiority in mi

Photographs cause false memories for the news.

What is the effect on memory when seemingly innocuous photos accompany false reports of the news? We asked people to read news headlines of world events, some of which were false. Half the headlines appeared with photographs that were tangentially related to the event; others were presented without photographs. People saw each headline only once, and indicated whether they remembered the event, knew about it, or neither. Photos led people to immediately and confidently remember false news events. Drawing on the Source Monitoring Framework (Johnson, Hashtroudi, & Lindsay, 1993), we suggest that

Radiation-recall skin disorders associated with the use of antineoplastic drugs. Pathogenesis, prevalence, and management.

Radiation-recall dermatitis is the occurrence, with subsequent administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy, of an acute inflammatory toxicity in a previously quiescent radiation field. It may occur from days to weeks, and sometimes years, after the radiation therapy. The precise mechanism is unknown. One hypothesis suggests that the initial radiation therapy leads to a depletion of tissue stem cells within the irradiated field and that subsequent cytotoxic chemotherapy exposure causes a 'remembered' reaction among the remaining surviving cells. An alternative proposition suggests that radiation i

The results of treatment of two hundred and seventy-three carcinomas of the hand.

Squamous carcinoma of the hand behaves more aggressively, and is more difficult to cure by non-surgical means, when it arises in the interdigital clefts or adjacent skin over the metacarpo phalangeal joints.
