Radionuclide lumbar cisternography using indium 111-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (111In-DTPA) and a mobile gamma-camera with a converging collimator was utilized as a bedside procedure to evaluate CSF dynamics and the patency of the cerebral ventricular system in 30 preterm infants with hydrocephalus. In a 27-year-old man with Bland-White-Garland syndrome (anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery), comparison was made between conventional diagnostic techniques and radionuclide imaging for selection of surgical procedure and evaluating the outcome. Dynamic 99mTc imaging exactly located the left coronary artery orifice, which was not seen on angiography, thereby determining the surgical approach, and 123I study revealed that, despite absence of symptoms, the adrenergic activity of the heart was globally diminished, with limited response to revascularization.

Conventional radiology is the most important diagnostic imaging method for the arthrosis deformans of the little peripheral joints, sometimes radionuclide bone imaging is used as a supplement. We deal with the classification and the radiological signs of the arthrosis deformans in general and of the peripheral joints in particular. Great importance is attached to typical findings and finding constellations in text and pictures. We try to explain the complex differential diagnosis and the implication with other disorders of the joints in a brief and poignant way.

Sudden low back pain is common in elderly women. It causes physical and mental stress, and results in deterioration of functional movement and in activities of daily living. Awareness of possible sacral insufficiency fracture is important; they may be demonstrated by imaging modalities, mainly radionuclide bone scan. Prognosis is good and accurate diagnosis serves to exclude malignancy and relieve fear of chronic pain and disability. We describe 4 women, aged 84, 82, 71 and 77 who illustrating the clinical and imaging findings of this disorder.

We evaluated a radionuclide scintigraphic technique for imaging relative cerebral perfusion in 18 children who had no evidence of cortical and brainstem function. Midfacial trauma can produce fractures and soft tissue injuries and can embed foreign bodies within the eye, orbit, and brain. A careful history and ocular examination are fundamental to the evaluation of any patient who has suffered orbital injuries. In order to obtain an early prediction for segmental collapse of the femoral head after femoral neck fracture, we have studied in 53 cases of the femoral neck fracture using 99mTC-MDP scintimetry. For diagnosis of metastatic bone pathology x-ray and radionuclide studies were combined into one: electroroentgenoscanography. A total of 48 patients with different sites of a primary tumor process were examined using 99mTc-pyrophosphate. A 43-year-old woman was evaluated because of a round tumor at the base of the tongue. Scintigraphy with 131I showed radionuclide uptake over the posterior part of the tongue but no uptake at all at the usual pretracheal location. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well defined round mass of high signal intensity, which was clearly delineated from adjacent muscular tissue.

An unusual patient with pyogenic spondylodiscitis and preservation of the disc space anteriorly is reported. The diagnosis of pyogenic spondylodiscitis may be difficult when there is underlying spinal disease. We emphasize the need for early systematic imaging studies and intervention in such patients, including careful evaluation of vertebral endplates on plain films, early use of radionuclide studies, and prompt needle aspiration.

Cross-sectional imaging of the adrenal glands is described, and examples of pheochromocytoma, bilateral adrenal hyperplasia, aldosteronoma, and metastasis are presented. Midline activity low in the pelvis seen on Ga-67 scans is frequently attributed to colonic excretion of radionuclide. We have seen two cases of infectious prostatitis with focal uptake of Ga-67 within the prostate gland. Satisfactory intrascrotal position of the testicles was achieved by dividing the spermatic vessels, leaving the vas deferens intact, in 3 patients with undescended testes. A postoperative scrotal scan provided objective means of evaluating the adequacy of testicular circulation. To determine the efficacy of various procedures for orchiopexy for undescended testes we suggest that postoperative evaluation include radionuclide imaging of the scrotum.
