Rats were examined for their susceptibility to infection with Legionella pneumophila. Different strains of L. pneumophila representing serogroups 1 to 4 were tested (Philadelphia 1 and 2, Togus 1, Bloomington 2, Los Angeles 1, and the recently isolated LD-8 from the epidemics in Västeraas, Sweden). Listeria monocytogenes colonized the gastrointestinal tract of adult germfree rats (10(10) to 10(11)/g, dry weight) within 24 h after oral exposure. Between 3 and 14 days after monoassociation, L. monocytogenes caused a self-limiting pseudomembranous colitis, bacteremia, and infection of the spleen and liver. Vitamin A deficiency has been shown to produce a reduction in the sulfation process. Somatomedin, a growth hormone dependent factor has also been shown to stimulate the uptake of sulfate by cartilage. The etiology of diabetes in some conditions of iron overload is not known. Chronic administration of lithium salts is associated with hypercalciuria in the rat. To study the renal and extrarenal mechanisms of this phenomenon, we utilized balance and clearance techniques in rats pair-fed diets with or without Li2CO3 (0.5 meq/day per rat). A standardized self-administration procedure in rats was used to determine the intravenous self-administration liability of graded doses of various drugs.
